Highly Recommended!
We have fished with Captain Chris and Baranof Fishing for ten plus years, I can’t recommend them highly enough! Everyone who works there from the captains, office staff to the dock hands are friendly, helpful and always professional. This year we caught halibut, ling cod, salmon and rockfish.
I am really not a fisherman, but Captain Chris tells sets up my rod for whatever we are going for and tells me the most successful technique. There are days when we don’t catch many fish, but they are by far the exception.

This trip was amazing all around. Caught halibut, cod, flounder, dog fish, and even some yellow eye. We didn’t get to keep it all because of the rules but it was great to see all the different species. Captain Landon was awesome. He knew all the fish and was easy to hang out with for the half day. Great trip 10/10 recommend.

Landon was an amazing boat captain and guide for our half day Halibut fishing trip from a cruise ship in port. He was friendly, knowledgeable, excited and committed to getting our crew good catches. I’d recommend anybody call Baranoff for their Ketchikan fishing experience!

My daughter and I had an amazing time with Captain Jonathan Parent. The whole experience is a must for anyone visiting Alaska. The camp where they cook what you catch is super cool and the food is some of the best you’ll eat while on vacation.

Captain Garret McCleery deserves the highest rating, he put us on halibut and cod just as quick as we put bait down!!! He was the best anyone could have hoped for in every aspect. Book him for the experience of a lifetime.

This was the best experience of our Alaska vacation! The people, equipment, vessel, and the overall excursion was awesome. To top it off, our Captain, Jack Finnegan, was fantastic. His level of knowledge, professionalism, personality and passion for his profession was outstanding. We will recommend this company, and Jack, to our friends and Travel Agent.

This excursion exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds! Captain Jonathan was outstanding! He is professional, knowledgeable, helpful, informative, and kind. He shared his love and excitement for fishing which made it more fun. The trip was exactly as described. We were taught how to fish, taken to areas abundant with fish, given assistance only as necessary, and treated to a cooked meal of our catches. Captain Jonathan did his best to put us over fish. It was obvious he is very good at this and wanted us to have the best experience possible. He shared in our joy and excitement in each fish caught. During the entire trip we each handled our own fishing rods. We fished, reeled in, and lifted the fish ourselves. Jonathan assisted only as needed to get the fish into the boat and off the line. Each of us on the boat caught several fish. The onshore meal was delicious! Every single moment was used to the maximum enjoyment. No time was wasted. The only negative of this experience is I was not able to go back and do it again the next day! I would definitely book this excursion again, or any excursion with Baranof Fishing Excursions!
I will now include a more detailed description of every aspect of the trip. Before I signed up, I wanted to know many details about the experience and hope this will help others with the same questions.
At the dock we were greeted by shore crew who made sure we had our fishing licenses and helped those who didn’t. It saves time if you get your license before the excursion. ShoreEx on Princess Cruises provided the information to do this.
The captain gives you outerwear (pants – with shoulder straps like a bib, jacket with hood, boots, life jacket). All of this will keep you dry and warm. There is a small box space under each boat seat for you to store belongings. This is enough space for a backpack. There is also a net on the back of the chair for holding items. Captain will give you safety instructions, what to do in an emergency, instructions on how to use the equipment, and tips on fishing. Captain Jonathan did all of this completely and briefly as possible. I suggest using the rest room before arriving at the dock. They do have one there, but when you arrive you are busy getting your gear on and getting ready to fish. There is not another opportunity for a rest room until the shoreside camp about 3-4 hours later. The boat ride to the fishing spots was about 25-30 minutes there and back. It can be quite windy and bumpy and feels fast. It is exhilarating!
He went to several locations and each of us (4 passengers) caught several fish by jigging for bottom fish. I caught 7 Redstripes with no prior experience. He saved our fish for the meal later if they were a decent size. He released the fish that were too small. He was always complimentary of our catches and separated the fish without singling out which ones were too small, except for a few instances of good humor.
After several locations with a great amount of time bottom fishing, he put the gear away and changed over to salmon fishing. For this, we all worked together. We did not each catch salmon by ourselves. It was the end of the season and we were fortunate to get one Coho working together on the boat. We each got to take our photo with it and shared it in the meal.
We were taken to shore for our campfire meal. There is the opportunity to watch your captain clean and filet the fish or you can go to the campfire to rest and visit. It is entertaining and informative to watch the process. We also had our photos taken with all the fish we caught. The meal onshore was exactly as described. Hot chocolate and lemonade were provided. The fish was excellently prepared and quite delicious. The saffron-infused bouillabaisse did not overpower or take away, but only added to the flavor of the fish. A large sourdough roll and delightful rhubarb-blueberry crumble were also provided.
As a bonus today, we also saw 2 whales!
OUTSTANDING EXCURSION! Worth every penny and moment spent!

My family had an amazing outing with Capt. David Dentinger. He did a fantastic job finding great spots for us to fish, and made sure that our 7 year old was having a great time and catching fish. We also did the "Wilderness Dining", which was really beautiful and delicious. The camp site in the rainforest was stunning, and to watch the crew filet and cook the fish we had caught was a really unique and special experience. We even got a bit up close and personal with an eagle who decided to snag one of our fish from the boat!

This was The highlight of our vacation. Jonathan, our guide was timely, smart, engaging and just fun to be with. The answered all of her questions and made us all at ease with the fishing and experience. Just as he said, we were on to fish as soon as we set anchor. My wife and I caught over twenty fish between the two of us. Five different species altogether. I even hooked a twelve to fifteen pound king salmon, but had to release it because it was not in season. The fish we did keep were prepared perfectly into a fish stew. It was amazing!! What a fantastic end to a wonderful vacation!!

We are planning a charter trip and my dad is in a wheelchair (paraplegic). What would the seating arrangement be for him once he is in the boat? He wants to fish for halibut so bad, but we want him to feel secure and safe. Thank you.

Hi, call Barinoff. I am confident they can accommodate you. They have a pretty good setup at dock where boats are.

We can either come end of July or first week of September. Ideally we want to fish for salmon in calm water and view bears. Which time would probably be better for us? Thank you!

Hi, is Captain John still running some of the fishing tours? Last time we were in Ketchikan, we went on our first fishing excursion with him and it was amazing. We ended the excursion early because of the rainy weather, and went to the Fish House after and ate some of our catch. The entire experience was amazing. We are bringing my parents back this year in June and would love to book another fishing trip with him.
Thanks,
Jess

Again, I cannot comment as to whether John is still guiding. However, we had Capt. Geoff and he was great! We scheduled a private charter and the experience was amazing.

Does anyone have experience fishing in either Juneau, Ketchikan or Sitka in mid June? I understand King Salmon is catch and release until June 15, unfortunately the day we leave. I am trying to decide among those 3 ports which will give us the best opportunities to catch and ship home the best amount of salmon, maybe halibut.

i was in Ketchikan last week. We crushed halibut and rockfish. Baron of fishing is who we used and they were great.
เขียนเมื่อ 10 มิถุนายน 2019
We will be in Juneau 6/11 and Ketchikan 6/13, because of the relatively early time of year and the catch and release for King, which of those 2 places would offer better possibilities for salmon? What types would we be able to keep for processing? Do you pick up at our ship?
Thank you,
Connie Oliver

Im a local and won the trip. But had fun, i went for Halibut. Hopefully salmon will be better this year, was really bad run last year. King salmon will be running at time you are here, yes you can get it processed. On a different note I drive for Sourdough cab and if you do a tour use a cab (preferably me lol but if im not there its most economical $70 an hour (usually runs over for no extra charge and thats up to 6 people (versus paying 50-100 in other tours a piece! 907 225 5544 is number have a wonderful trip! Alaska is absolutely beautiful so lucky to have lived here my whole life!

What was the cost , how long did you fish and was it worth it ?
เขียนเมื่อ 10 กุมภาพันธ์ 2019
Hi. I'm only going from memory. So, don't quote me on this. (You can always call them and they'll tell you the exact price... Book with Baranof directly.) I think our party of 4 (2 couples) paid about $1000 ($250 each) and that was for a boat and captain (just for us) and for 6 hours (with a small boxed lunch/snack for each of us included). We caught 9 fish. Was it worth it? Well - yes to our husbands who really wanted a fishing experience in Alaska. So, I was glad for them - it was a great day! (For me, not being into fishing at all, I would have skipped it if our husbands were not with us.) If you enjoy fishing, then - yes - it was worth it.

Is this fishing trip in protected waters or do you go in the ocean? My wife is prone to seasickness and I’m a little concerned
Thanks
เขียนเมื่อ 25 มกราคม 2019
Hi Tony!
We are able to head out to more open waters, but the majority of our fishing trips are conducted in the protected inter-island waters surrounding Ketchikan.
Thanks for the question,
Greg

Any availability for 1 person for salmon fishing on Mon. Sept. 3rd? Will be arriving on the Star Princess very early that morning. Please send your phone contact information.
เขียนเมื่อ 29 สิงหาคม 2018
They will put you on a boat if there is room , my wife and I were the only two on the boat and at the last minute they had one person that wanted to go , he ended up catching 3 pink salmon , it was great , and for your info going for salmon is a better idea than halibut , they have to travel farther and you have to drop your line to the bottom , if you don’t have to much time

What is the cost of the excursion with and without meal for two people . How long does the trip last.
เขียนเมื่อ 17 กรกฎาคม 2018
Sorry to be just getting back to you. I believe it was $600 for 4 of us and then they cooked our catch at their restaurant. One of the best meals I have ever had. Bring your own snacks while on boat.
เขียนเมื่อ 16 สิงหาคม 2019
I apologize for the delayed response. As with most of the sportfishing companies in town, we contract the processing (cleaning, portioning, glazing, and freezing) to a local company lodge in town that employs full-time fish processing employees. After a day of fishing, we will fill out a form with you deciding how you'd like your catch processed, then run those fish down to the contractor's fish processing center.
