I stayed at this hotel in October and took the hop on hop off bus city tour with Soweto extension. The hotel will take you to the nearest stop at Constitution Hill if you ask. The staff are very helpful. I don't know about shopping and handicrafts but the hotel will help and take you there. I found Braamfontein fine during the day but advised not to wander after dusk.

I would not recommend to visit Soweto. Is a shame to show this to tourists . Just go to your city and look for the poor people quarters. Go to the museum to visit the discovery of the Homo Naledi. Very interesting for kids. Anyway JB is not an interesting place at all. Compare to Cape Town this is a city to skip.

I can highly recommend Ntombi, who runs Usizo Lwenkosi Tours (see my review on her TripAdvisor page). She lives in Soweto and therefore knows where and where not to go - don't let fearmongers put you off! This is a place with a population of 5 million people, the majority wishing nobody ill will. Ntombi will customize her tours to suit your agenda and her prices are VERY reasonable, including a private tour. Yes the Apartheid Museum is one of the options. A one hour visit doesn't do the museum justice though, I'd recommend you set aside at least half a day and visit it privately. Roads are well marked and any GPS will get you there. The Museum is right next to the giant Gold Reef City complex. There is ample and safe parking outside the museum.

Bonsoir , Nos avons monté notre circuit privatif depuis Paris avec les ateliers du voyage , agence qui propose des circuits privatifs ou petits groupes , qui appartient a KUONI.Lors de notre périple en AFS, nous avons rencontré des Lillois qui passaient aussi par cette agence mais pour eux , ils s 'agissait d 'un auto tour .Le prestataire sur place est GO Tourism mais ce dernier ne travaille pas directement avec les individuels , seulement avec les agences selon les infos que j ai eues sur place .Pour info , j 'ai fait faire beaucoup de devis dans diverses agences sur paris et celle ci est très bien en terme de rapport qualité/prix .Nous étions seuls avec notre guide , déplacements entre régions faits en avion .Nous avons terminé par l extension aux Chutes Victoria , a faire absolument , c est MAGNIFIQUE !! Nous gardons un excellent souvenir de notre périple de 15jours en AFS et regardons déjà pour repartir !!! ps: pour rappel ,en juin , ce sera l hiver en AFS N hésitez a me contacter si vous avez d autres questions très bon séjour a vous Christine
