Extremely interesting visit. The attendant is very helpful and answered all of our questions, sharing much information about the Jewish history of Tomar and the building. Please ask to see the museum, as we needed to initiate that, but it may have been because we were near closing time. There is a wonderful video presentation.

Fascinating place ,very helpful lady attendant brought the place alive.We found it very easy to locate so are baffled by reviewers who said otherwise.

Built in the mid 16th century, it is the oldest synagogue in existence in Portugal. Although, today it is a museum. When built there was a sizeable Jewish population but today only a handful exist.
Not easy to find since it is a side street but there is a sin on the main street.

This place is not very easy to find but worth looking for as there is a video that explains the history behind the Synagogue and the importance of the location. The place is restored and it was valuable to learn about the history of Tomar.

A Sinagoga de Tomar situa-se na cidade velha e não longe da praça central. São duas instalações que estão remodeladas e com um acervo e história bem interessantes.

There is almost no Jewish community left in Tomar, and the synagogue signage explains the history of their suppression. A place to reflect on the intolerance of the past that can so easily come back.

Interesting place to visit. Be sure to visit the interpretive centre next door. My only disappointment (and I was not the only one) is that the signage and literature was in a weird "google translate" style that made it hard to read. I wish the local tourism centre would consult native speakers on English.

Located on one of the narrow alleys in Old Town Tomar , built in mid 15th cent. and served really as a synagogue only a half century . Today , after a long tasteful restoration - it serves as a small museum , and the main importance of it - reminding the world about the history and role of existing Jewish population and life in medieval Portugal .

Templo simples, mas em bom estado de conservação, no centro histórico de Tomar. Vale a visita, nem que seja para recordar o sofrimento do povo judeu ao longa da história e que não pode haver tolerância para mais holocaustos.

I know the synagouge was closed for restoration for a long period of time, and they had a small exhibition somewhere else.
Is the original location open for visits now?

Hello. Yes, the original site is now open for visits and the work inside has been completed. I imagine it will be closed on Mondays (so many places are in Tomar). Sorry for the delay replying. Enjoy your visit!

No need for advance reservation. There is a volonteer present during visiting hours who can be of some assistance if you overcome the language barrier...

Will the synagogue be open in March 10-13, 2018. Someone mentioned repairs in December 2017. We will not have a car, is it difficult to reach the synagogue by walking?

I would not know their schedule.
