Our group of 4 really enjoyed our walk around the Biosphere. Very interesting with the narration on our phones. Quite fascinating all that has been done & studied with this place.

The science behind this museum seems incredible, but there is no person there to explain it. To enter, you must scan the QR code and pay online. You also must download their app and listen to a virtual tour as you go through the museum. While the rain forest, the mangroves, the savanna all seem very interesting, and the views are nice to pause and look at, there is no interaction with anyone that can answer questions. Costs are adults $25, seniors $23, kids 5-17 years $15. Pretty steep for no interaction, and for just the ability to walk around. We left after an hour and 15 minutes.
They should create a volunteer group of docents that care about the Earth to explain what you are looking at. The remote area does not have the wi-fi capability to keep the virtual tour going. The audio can’t be understood, is crackly, so you find yourself wandering around and looking at all the plants, not knowing what it’s all about. Our 8 year old, really interested in science, exclaimed that she was very disappointed, and wish we had gone to Reid Park Zoo instead.
To check out more about what happened with the scientists during their experiments, check out Biosphere 2’s Wikipedia page. I learned more reading that than in the 75 minutes we wandered around, unable to ask anyone about what we were looking at.
I would whole-heartedly recommend for those looking for something neat to visit in the Tucson area, to go to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.

It was worth the two hour drive from Phoenix, it was very interesting to learn from this project. Using the app and downloading the audio tour you will come prepared. We booked the tickets in advance to make sure we could visit it on the day that would suit us. The audio tour gives more than enough info. I can advise everybody who is interested in our eco system and sustainability to visit this.

This has been a bucket list item for me since it was first in the news in the mid 1980's.
I finally made it yesterday and it was not disappointing. If you look at this with an open mind and the understanding that it is essentially one big science lab it is an amazing facility. Take the time to watch all of the videos and think about what they are telling you. I think this is still the best place in the world to study how climate change will affect us all in the future. Because this is a closed environment they can control all the aspects and variables that can't be controlled in nature. The Lung tour was a good add on. We did the app guided tour first then the Lung tour at 1pm I think that is a good way to do it because you will understand more what the lung does.
I didn't know what to expect when I got there but the tour was very informative and there were enough docents around to ask questions when I had them. The U of A is doing a good job of managing this facility and opening it up to new experiments.
This may not be the best place for youngsters but tweens and up with some curiosity will learn something and should enjoy themselves. I would highly recommend visiting.

My rating is not for the facility itself, which is very impressive and rates 5 stars for that. The rating reflects the overall experience.
We enjoyed seeing the Biosphere. It is a really interesting facility and the indoor forests are impressive. The history of the facility is quite interesting. However, we were disappointed by both the limited access you get and limited detail on the history of the two attempts for the occupants to live here.
What we didn't fully appreciate before we came is that this is an active research facility belonging to the University of Arizona. On the positive side, this is what is keeping the facility open and active and that's great. It is wonderful to see that all the money put into the facility is still producing a return. On the negative side: 1) It significantly limits what parts of the facility you can see. There is very little of the "crew quarters" that is open - the kitchen and one "apartment" behind glass. Much of the other space appears to be getting used. There is no access to any of the machinery or equipment that operate the facility. 2) The tour focuses as much on what research is being done there now vs. the history of the facility. There is a lot more about agriculture and crop science than we expected.
The tour requires your phone, and a fair amount of setup once you get there. There is no cell or WiFi outside the visitor's center, so you have to download the app to your phone, and then download all the videos. The person working walked us through that, so just be prepared that you need your phone and it will take maybe 10-15 minutes to go through the whole check-in process and app downloading. I highly recommend bringing headphones. Part of the tour is outside and it was windy when we went. Without headphones, the audio was tough to hear. Also, you won't bother others. There was a couple taking the tour near us and they were sharing the tour via the speaker on one phone - it was very distracting.
Tickets are $25pp. I'm not sure I'd bring kids here. The phone audio tour would not appeal to them, and even with kids ticket pricing, it would be a pretty expensive outing.

This is the second time I have done the tour. The first time we had an actual guide and the tour was wonderful. This time 4-4 years later we used and app on our phones to provide the tour, and it was really a let down. No ability to ask questions and were provided with much more general information.

This was a great tour to take with our family. Seeing the actual biosphere and the well preserved ecosystems within it made for an educational and entertaining day. Unique and engaging piece of history!

It was thrilling to see the place I heard so much about in the news three decades ago.
I recommend you pay the extra money for the lung tour; it was a critical part of the design of which I was completely unaware.
Moreover, the docents can answer many of your questions about the complex.

We enjoyed our visit to the biosphere. It’s an incredible, one of a kind facility, doing important research, but apart from that, it’s also so interesting and awe inspiring to wander through the various habitats and learn about the experiences of the “biosphereans”!

Most definitely. You can even walk in and get tickets. It is not busy and you can start as soon as you get there since it is self-guided.
Are there elevators

No. This place is old school. It is fabulous but very much a metal winding stair type of environment. LOVE IT!

There is NO tunnel any longer. It is one of the many features that have been closed.
I read there a a lot of stairs, are they all at once or scattered through out?

ฟอร์ตคอลลินส์, โคโลราโด26 ผลงาน
Yes there are stairs but there are also ramps outside of the facilities. You can go from the main welcome area to the Biosphere and if I recall use the ramps and not have to use the stairs, which is where most of the stairs are. When we visited a gentleman in a wheel chair participated but went on a separate tour . Inside the facility there were only a few steps at a time for transition.
I hope this helps.

The general tour is about 90 minutes. Then you are free to walk around the campus on your own. Overall we spent about 2 to 2 and a half hours there.

They did everything they could to control the CO2 levels in hopes that it will be absorbed by the plants and soils within the Biosphere.
