The telephone museum was quite complete. However more impressive was the entire pioneer village which one adMission gets you into also. Has some of the most complete historically accurate 1890s pioneer and farm equipment, homes, school church log cabins all completely furnished

The fact that there are only 12 reviews of this museum sadly says it all. This place is terrific but it is not well known. You do not need to be an engineer or technically oriented person to enjoy the exhibits here. A history of the phone from its early days through most of the 1900's is vividly on display. If you are of a certain age, you will recognize using many of the phones that are being shown. One of the greatest parts of this museum is where one of the staff tries to show youngsters how to make and receive a call using an old fashioned dial phone. The kids just could not get the hang of it. The museum is part of the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum which is also a good place to experience with young children. A definite "thumbs up".

There's a lot of history here -- from Alexander Graham Bell to maybe 20 years ago. The museum is basically a lot of phone equipment, books, etc., with cards that give the name and maybe a bit of explanation. But if you, say, grew up in the era with only cell phones, I'm not sure how much this will mean to you. (For instance, what are those boxes with a sign about data? They're called "modems". They're the way that people and computers sent text and data over telephone lines before the Internet.) I wish the museum could find volunteers to write some engaging explanations for people who don't know what this is about. (I'll include some photos with captions that explain.)

This is a museum that does an excellent job of telling the history of telephone communication - how it began and its evolution from the early switchboard days to present cellular phones. The focus is on the former half of history. The displays start from a replica of the communications device that Alexander Graham Bell invented - the first telephone and then meanders through the evolution of telephones, significantly covering Bell Telephone Company and American Telephone and Telegraph, which later became known as AT&T. I was amazed to find such a rich collection of telephone related items from the earliest days. Some of the artifacts that stood out for me included phones used in late 19th century to mid 20th century, earliest 2400 bps modems, early round dial telephones, evolution of switchboards and telephone exchanges and a number of pay phones that were displayed as well. Steve, who was a docent, gave me a wonderful tour of the museum and it was quite obvious that he was quite knowledgeable and passionate about the subject.
Hats off to the wonderful folks who have played a role in creating, maintaining and enriching the collection here. They do have a mechanical switchboard which has been modified to show the step-by-step of how a phone connection gets established. Apart from that, there is not much for children in this museum. If you are an electronics, technology or history buff, you'll enjoy visiting this museum a lot!

Being of the generation that we are, we remember many of the items in the museum. Absolutely wonderful history of the telephone starting with the very first phone, switchboards, teletype, cell phones, to include.the bag phone, insulators, and fiber optic. The gentleman who gave us the tour had worked as a lineman in PA for 32 years. He was such an amazing man with so much history of the telephone to provide folks coming into the museum. If you like phones and you like history this is the place to visit.

The museum is accessable at the entrance to the Pioneer Village. Displays are arranged in chronological order and illuminate the importance of this invention locally and worldwide.

The NEW address is 3901 W. Pioneer Road, Phoenix, AZ 85086. It's just west off I-17 if you're driving north from Phoenix towards Flagstaff. It now forms part of the Pioneer Living History Museum located at that same site.
My favourite part was seeing (in real time) the physical switching that was required for dial calling back in the day. Now I understand why telephone companies throughout North America required so many buildings in so many locations around cities and towns.
The admission cost covers the Pioneer Telephone Museum and the rest of the Pioneer Living History Museum, as well. Please note, the Telephone Museum is closed on Monday & Tuesday.

I believe we were the last group to have a tour at this CenturyLink facility. The people who put this fabulous museum together needed to find a new location and the Pioneer Museum north of Phoenix agreed to take the collection. I'm sure they will create an interesting display but they can never match the passion and first hand knowledge of the men who worked for the telephone companies for so many historic years.

The Telephone museum is in the Century Link building that has been home to Quest, USWest, Mtn Bell, etc... Two retired employees shared their knowledge and experiences about the world of communications... I took my Dad (84 yrs old) and we both absolutely loved it! They did a great job answering questions & explaining the historical place of Western Electric and Alexander G Bell! A little gem!

This was great! We were fascinated by the origins of the telephone in the city and how it grew. The guides are so passionate about the subject and although you might think it sounds boring, believe me it's not! You need to book in advance though, they only open if they know someone is coming.
