We used the map of the 2 trails but reached a point where they just weren't clearly marked, so technically we didn't complete either trail because we couldn't figure out the route. I found the steps throughout the trail more difficult than just going around them-so that's what I did. We had a 3 & 6 year old with us which was a bit challenging, but thank goodness we brought cold water with us. It was a rather rough climb and one of our adult family members wasn't able to make it and ended up sitting on a bench until we came back. We ended up going back down the same way we went up. It took the entire 2 hours. If we had completed either trail, we would have missed the boat-literally.

We took the shuttle from Fairfield Bay Marina to here. It was a pretty challenging hike going up. We did fine and got some great pictures from up there. My complaint is that the other end of the goat trail says it is closed. Would of been nice to know that before heading that way.

We meant to go to the marina & kayak across, but we got a late start so we just went ahead & drove to the trail head. We took the Summit Trail, which was a little steep-ish, so we were out of breath (I hike sometimes & it was my friend's first time). We took our time & picked up trash along the way (there wasn't much compared to other places). Everyone we passed was super friendly (we sometimes have questionable encounters in rural places because of race). The only thing that I wish I had known before starting is that once you get to the ridges, you climb the rock crevices up. I walked back & forth across the trail looking for where I could get up for about 30 minutes before running into a group coming down & asking how they got up. It was so beautiful & the breeze was blowing once we got up there. We sat & looked a while before heading back down. Definitely one of the more memorable hikes I've been on. Would definitely recommend this for anyone willing to put in a little effort for the fantastic view! I hope to do it again using the kayaks! There were two other trails that did not go to the top, but would probably be easier for children.

We went in January, which is obviously cold. The shuttle boat ride to/from the island was a pricey and a bit cold, but the mountain hiking trail warmed us up on the island. It is not an easy hiking trail, but it is fun! Beautiful day and nice views from the top of the mountain. You can get to the island by private boat or by shuttle boat from the marina. However, the island (Sugar Loaf Mountain) is free to hike.

We hiked this in mid July. Most of the hike was shaded. It took about 35 min to make it to the top. The view was amazing and made the last little bit of the hike/stair climb, well worth it! We were the only four people who were on the mountain so that was really neat too. We used the shuttle boat at the marina to take us out and pick us up. They give you two hours to hike and tour. We went out at two and they picked us up a little after 4 in the afternoon.

The island/Mtn itself was beautiful. The sights at the top were gorgeous. We are a fit family that loves to go hikes, so the hike wasn’t bad for us...but there were a few areas that were difficult, and I can imagine that it would be difficult for anyone with a medical condition, or older/younger.
We saw 4 armadillos at the top (we went on a side trail after we made it to the top), and some truly gorgeous views.
The shuttle over was pricey, but the boat was dirty (torn leather seats, mold on side of seats, driver lacked any knowledge of the area AND smoked while we were riding). I’ve read reviews saying they paid $7 a person...we had 3 adults/2 children AND had a free ticket coupon AND 10% off due to staying with Wyndham...and still paid $40-something dollars....if you can find another way to get there, I would;)

Took the shuttle boat from the marina to the island to hike the mountain trails. Would forewarn others now that hike, while certainly doable, was a little more difficult than what others lead us to believe. Paths are rocky trails that wind back and forth through the forest and up the side of the mountain. About 2/3rds of the way up, the path becomes numerous wooden steps that lead you to the top.

We had our younger daughter with us, who had a difficult time climbing the paths and going up some of the larger steps. We carried her for parts of the way in order to make it to the top in the limited time frame we had before shuttle returned for pick-up. View from the top was lovely. You're pretty high up on this mountain island, so the view stretches pretty far in every direction.

Climb down was easier in that you weren't having to climb up the mountain. Would also forewarn visitors that there aren't many handrails available at the stairs and on the path (i.e., some of the descent was tricky to maintain footing). Got back to the dock with a little bit of time to spare. Both kids were really excited about making to the top of the mountain. Adults were impressed but less energetic after the trip. Grateful that path has a few areas with benches to be able to sit and recuperate for a bit.

We are people in the 70+ age group. After reading the reviews I thought the hike up this mountain sounded doable. After taking the shuttle to the mountain once you get off the boat the hike is much more strenuous than what I read. You pretty much start to go up the mountain on a rocky trail in the forest. After many switchbacks going up, up, up you come across wooden steps going up even more. At the top of the steps there is a great view of the lake. If you wanted to catch the boat in two hours then you should turn back at that point. We were encouraged by another hiker to go all the way to the top so plodded on. While it was worth it to say we made it to the top, the views were pretty much the same. Going back down is rather treacherous so we found some sticks to use as a walking stick. We were the last few off the island and wound up being there for the four hour time frame. We were glad to sit down!

Climb was a little more difficult than other reviews say but there are places to rest along the way. We took the ferry from the marina and they come and go every 2 hours. Unless you are an avid hiker you need to allow at least 3 hours so take the earlier ferry to ensure time to enjoy. Gorgeous reward at the top. View allows you to enjoy God’s majesty. Watched eagles sail back and forth and enjoyed a nice breeze.

Loved it! Take plenty of water and snacks.

We went over with the Marina to the mountain. We had four kids with us ages 4 to 8. This hike is not made for smaller children because the stairs at the top and a few other places. I also wouldn't suggest it if your unable to climb a bunch of stairs or climb steep inclines. We so enjoyed it most of the time. The children loved the boat ride to the mountain. They also loved the view at the very top, which if you're able to do the stairs it is worth it! They do have some benchs for you to sit along the way.
