We went on a trip with Bewketu. We really recommend it. He took care of us in every detail. From the planning stage before we arrived in Ethiopia to the moment we arrived home.
Bewketu provided us with a driver and a suitable vehicle for every stage of the trip. All the guides who accompanied us were really great.
All the hotels he recommended - did not disappoint.
In short, we had a trip of a lifetime.
We thank him for that.

I have just returned from an 18 night tour of Ethiopia. I'm a single female traveller who enjoys independent travel. My 12 night visit to Northern Ethiopia was organised by Nur who owns Simien Mountain Tour. Like previous posts I can fully understand why Lonely Planet rate him as a top guide, although I did not know this when I booked my trip. He is totally on the case and his main concern is that his clients have a good time and enjoy their trip. I spent 8 nights in the Simien Mountains trekking and although the weather was unseasonable cold and snowy I managed to climb to the top of Mount Bwahit. This would have been impossible without the help and encouragement of Nur and the scout. His trekking team, my new 'Ethiopian Family', were great, the food was amazing but most of all they were polite, professional and I felt totally safe in their capable hands. This is extremely important when you are a solo traveller. Nur does not have an office but you can message him on Whataspp his number is +25193277888. Organising my trip with him was really easy. The price I paid was the price we agreed, no hidden extras and no hassle. I have no hesitation in recommending Nur to organise your trip to Ethiopia.

When you go on a tour with Nur, it’s obvious why The Lonely Planet recommends him by name. He is highly organized, kind and fun to talk to, and fair and honest to deal with. We went on a 3 night, 4 day trip with him to the Simien Mountains starting from Gondar. Once we booked with him, he took us on the tour exactly as promised and didn’t try to charge us any extras. Even when my wife got altitude sickness, he paid for a car to take her to the next camp and didn’t ask us to pay any more. He helped others in the group like this too. The food was great, the equipment was average. He grew up in the Simien Mountains so he knows lots of the people that you pass when hiking and can give you an insiders view on their life. He used to be just a guide but now he owns the Simien Mountains Tour company. Make sure you ask when you call that this is Nur’s company because their are lots of similarly named companies in Gondar. He doesn’t have an office so just give him a call and you can see when the next trek is departing. WhatsApp number +251 93 277 8888. he is good at corresponding. He is the owner but he also guided our trek. He may arrange another guide to go with you instead of himself but I would trust him to make sure that guide is good and trustworthy as well so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. We couldn’t be happier with the trip!

I did a solo trip for 17 days in Northern Ethiopia including Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains, Tigray, Mekele, the Afar Region (Danakil Depression and Erte’Ale Volcano), Lailbea and Addis back in October 2015 and the organizer for the whole trip was Nurlign owner of Simien Mountains Tour. The trip was by far one of the greatest and rawest experiences I have had in my life. The organization was perfect. Nurlign is very passionate and knowledgeable about his country and this translates into the experience he gives his clients. He is very friendly and showed genuine care and always strived to make the trip a great experience every step of the way. He is an amazing guide and I would definetly organize a trip through him on another trip to Ethiopia and would recommend him to any independent travelers contemplating visiting Ethiopia.

We as a couple went on a 4 day / 3 night hike and joined 6 other people for the first 3 days, we were with just 3 for the 4th day. Great easy hiking, great views, lots of baboons.
After a lengthy email negotation beforehand I got what I felt was a price at the lower end of what seems possible (i.e. most others in the group paid more than 60 USD pp pd). We all enjoyed the mountain hike but all the people in the group agreed that this is actually a ridiculous price for hiking with a service. This price is imo only acceptable if you hike just on your own as one person and require all the services (transport into the park, transport of your big luggage, tent/mattresses/sleeping bags, 3 meals a day and snacks/tea) just for yourself. All of these services were well organised, but again I'm confident they are strongly overpriced when in group, which of course is a matter of group discussion when the guide suggests everyone involved kind of expects some tips still.
All tour companies work together, there's no real competition, and therefore no fair prices. Our case for example: we were with 8 in one group, yet we negotiated our hiking tour independently with 5 different tour companies. If you're in such a group, then everyone involved can get a good salary if the price were even only half. It looks like the tour organisers keep most of the money for themselves.
Note that you can organise your hike independently in Debark at the National Park office in the main street at the south end of the town. You have to pay the entrance fee, rent a tent if needed, and only a scout and a guide is mandatory. I would recommend taking a cook though, it's great to have warm drinks and foods ready when you arrive at the camp site.
I think you need to be with minimum 4 to pay a better price than with a tour, and that's because the most difficult/expensive part will be the arrangement of the transport to/from Debark and into the national park. And you will have to withstand the temptation and pressure from tour organisers hanging around at the national park office.
My suggestion would be to take some time to find like-minded/planning tourists arriving in Gondar or Debark and make a group yourselves to organise it independently once in Debark (that's what the tour organisers do in the end!).
Or if you don't care too much about the baboons skip the Simiens and go hike near Lalibela (rural life) or in the Bale mountains (more chance for the Simien wolf). Prices there are still more reasonable there.

That was an amazing tour - we did a two day tour. We met in debark and started there the tour. In the afternoon we were dropped in the Simien mountain lodge for the overnight sleep and the other day was even more amazing - we we sitting in a group of around 600 monkeys and watching them. Was great experience and Joshua was a great guide!!!

We hooked up at Gonder in the morning of March 26th for a hike in the Simien mountains. 6 of us started together but only 2 of us have time to finish the whole trek. The mountain is beautiful, easy to trek but some sections are challenging especially when going down hills.
Our Guide David was amazing.

Last January a friend and I went for a tour to the Simien Mountains. The view of the mountains and the baboons was splendid. I can imagine that in the rainy season or right after it the landscape must look even better! Since we were in a rush we only did a 2-day trekking tour guided by a local guide: Tayachew Sisay and two very nice guards. Although 2 days are not enough to fully enjoy the mountains, Tayachew made sure that we would see baboons and that we could learn something about the vegetation and even see a small waterfall that is probably even more beautiful in the rainy season. Tayachew was very friendly and sweet, his english was good and he was really careful to do a tour adapting to the pace and condition of the tourists. The night we spent camping was awesome as well. We were taken to a camping site where we found more people. We got probably the best meal that I had in Ethiopia (vegetarian, which for me was perfect) and at night everyone joined for the camp fire and had awesome talks and even some dance. I have to say it was my first time camping and I had a great experience! I felt super safe, I was warm enough (it helps to bring your own warm clothes though, although we also got many blankets, a tent and a sleeping bag). We also had the chance to see a deer and a nice sunset! I can only recommend people going there and to book a tour with a local person!! It makes it way better to have a small group and you also get to know how people from Ethiopia live and think. Tayachew was really amazing so if anyone would like to book a tour with him, here it is his email: tayachews@gmail.com
