We did the pygmee elephant trail (“7” days, 4 in the forest) in north Kalimantan with Detourgigant. All in all poor value for money (1100€ pp , group of 5) if you want to see wildlife as advertised. Yes we went into the primary forest with a group of Dayak who were eagerly hunting all the way. The negotiating of the rapids with motorised canoes was exciting but the guys were not interested in wildlife spotting if it wasn’t for eating it. Their way of life is a confused one and sad to watch.

We did a 4d3n tour to kutai national park with De Gigant tours in September 2022.
Our guide, Rastam, was very kind, generous and efficient. I would recommend him.
Our low rating is more about the trip itself. As with many trips in borneo, the 4d, 3n description isn’t particularly accurate. You spend 1.5 days in Kutai national park, 2 days travelling. Kutai national park is not particularly beautiful and the jungle is not in great condition. We did see three wild orangutans, but no other wildlife.
The motor canoe is a brief trip (1hr) up a local river to spot crocodiles. There is plenty of rubbish in the river and will only see crocodiles if the tide is right.
The research station is newly built, simple, but clean. It is worth noting that there is only electricity from mid afternoon until 11:30pm, so sleeping can be challenging in the heat and the middle of the day was quite intense. Thee is no fridge or ice on the premises. Food was very basic.
The hotel in Samarinda on the final night was quite nice.
All in all, we wished we had spent more time elsewhere as we experienced much better jungle elsewhere.

taman national kutai terdapat di daerah dekat dengan kota bontang. taman national ini memberi pengetahuan tentang berbagai tumbuh-tumbuhan. disana bahkan terdapat pohon yang sangat besar. terdapat juga 2 area lintasan. lintasan kecil dan besar. cocok untuk outbond.

We (father/daughter and her friend) did the 9 days Mahakan Soul travel 11th till 19 th of march 2016 with De Gigant Tours Borneo /Lucas Zwaal.
we didn't get what was promised, and were very disappointed when we refer to the amount of money we payed for an expected experience:
-we did a prepayment and had to pay the rest of de money cash to the guide.....;.
-we didn't get the canoe sailing and the dinner the first day;
-we didn't get Dayak hunting; the guide was even not good eguiped in the jungle,
-we got the adress from lonely planet. We think lonely planet (2013) has to stop their advice because of the problems with this organisation: no life jacket with sailing on the wild river with ces and no good preparation for health condition in the jungle. we have said that Lucas Zwaal should have to informe him with Kiri Travel our good jungle experience the week before. I didn't get the idea that he will take his measures in this way......

Taman Nasional Kutai, adalah salah satu hutan konservasi yang terletak di pertengahan Bontang-Sangatta. Jika kita masuk ke dalam. Pertama Kita akan melewati jembatan kayu, dan jembatan gantung sebelum akhirnya melewati jalan setapak untuk awal petualangan. Kita akan berada didalam hutan selama 3 jam, dengan menyuguhkan alam yang luar biasa. Akan ada banyak atraksi di dalam nya. Mulai dari rumah puhon yang tinggi banget, ada air terjun bidadari, ada jembatan satu tali dan lain-lain. Jadi kalau kalian berkunjung ke Kalimantan Timur, Jangan lupa datang Ke Taman Nasional Kutai

Was dit ook Kalimantan dat je bezocht hebt? Weet je soms wel enkele betrouwbare plaatselijk touroperators die we onder de arm kunnen nemen? Wij zouden volgend jaar gaan.
