It takes about 3 hrs to get to the village from Ayun fort Inn. In some places the road is a single track and jeeps have to give way by reversing. If we have heavy traffic as during a festival then it can take much longer.
In order to see the festival and dances it is better to stay overnight at Bumburat, but unfortunately the PTDC motel is closed. There are other hotels but maybe none suitable for families. We were unable to see the museum since it was Friday which is the weekly holiday.
Their custom is to bury the dead in wooden coffins in open air. We can visit the grave yard. There are shops that are selling Kalash traditional caps and clothes. There is an open compound where at night during the festival dances take place.
One can take pictures of the colorful dressed people

Durante il nostro viaggio in Pakistan abbiamo trascorso qualche giorno nelle valli abitate dalla popolazione Kalash che sta rapidamente riducendosi ma è comunque un incontro interessante. La Bumburet è una delle maggiori tra le valli popolate dai Kalash e merita la visita sia per l’aspetto antropologico che per quello paesaggistico.

Cool beautifull juicy place with its ancient hindu culture.the road is too bad but local drivers can drive you there.
A couple of restaurants can feed and shops offer local customary staff.
Boombarat has nice hotels to stay.

Bamburate Valley is located at a convenient distance from Chitral and is frequented by both locals and foreigners. The local Kalash tribes are still sticking to their old ways and are pleased to show-case their living style. Their dresses are unique, and so is their overall way of life.
Bamburate has 4 villages just 1 or 2 km apart and has good hotels available for the tourists. In summer the valley is busy. Some part of the track from the main national highway, N45, to the Bamburate Valley is at places very narrow and crossing with on-coming traffick is difficult. Caution and a slow pace is needed for outsider drivers. A four-wheel drive is recommended although the locals would regularly travel using battered regular 2wd sedans and station wagons.
The vally itself is beautiful. The views are mesmerizing.
Once you are in the valley, exploring the area and the different villages on foot is very much recommended. Do try the different local foods and the way these are eaten and served.

Belle découverte de la vallée au départ d'Ayun. Comme de nombreux pakistanais, très accueillants. La vallée vaut ainsi surtout pour sa population dont les femmes conservent la tenue traditionnelle et son magnifique musée. N'hésitez pas à aller sur les hauteurs du village où j'ai pu voir les anciennes maisons, statues animistes et goûter à leur alcool assez costaud. Aucun de touriste le jour de ma venue. Un seul petit restaurant ouvert.

Siamo andati a Bumburet per il Festival dei Kalash di agosto (Uchal). 2 giorni fantastici, la gente è cordiale e i paesi sono davvero belli.
La strada per arrivarci é molto impegnativa ma ne vale la pena, le strutture sono semplici, è tutto il personale è davvero disponibile. Quanto al festival è un evento da non perdere. Davvero emozionante. I Kalash sono davvero un grande popolo dalle tradizioni che si perdono nella notte dei tempi, qualcuno sostiene che sono gli eredi dell'esercito di Alessandro Magno. Alcuni sono biondi e con gli occhi chiari. Vale la pena fare tanta strada per assistervi.

This is the main kalash valley, & the biggest one, it is about 2 hours from Ayun Village by jeep or 3.5 hours from Chitral. The road to the Valley is dirt/rocky & jeepable with narrow turns at some places. Once you reach the valley it opens up & is beautiful with river running on one side & lusg green fields/high mountains /fruit trees & alpine trees. There is a good Museum about Kalash culture, it charges minimal Rs. 5 for Pakistani & Rs.2000 for Non pakistani, & also charges extra to take pictures. PTDC motel is the BEST option IF one intends to stay over night which offers clean rooms & good food.
Unfortunately due to the invasion of NON LOCALS with beards the Kalash culture is under severe threat & is hanging by a thin thread. Kalash people are very open & welcoming, there are several gift shops in the valley which sells very colourful & Beautiful local hand made handicraft at very reasonable price. There is a temple as well as well as centuries old grave yard worth seeing, as well as typical Kalash homes are worth seeing.
HIGHLY RECOMMED to go visit BEFORE THIS CULTURE WHICH IS FOUND NO WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD DISAPPEARS.

Kalasha People live in three isolated mountain valleys Bumburet ,Rumbur,Birir, Grave yards are interesting The tradition of making wooden statues of ancestors to honour the memory of the dead is still observed among some of the Kalash people of Chitral. These statues, locally called Gandao, can be seen standing over the graves in the three Kalash valleys of Birir, Rumbur and Bumburet ,Museum at Bumburet is not be missed

Beautiful valley and beautiful people. Enjoyed alot.

Questa valle è ferma nel tempo e qui è possibile incontrare la popolazione Kalash (i leggendari Kafiri) che conta non più di 4000 persone che hanno culto animista. E' una esperienza unica da fare magari in occasione dei festival locali.

I would not suggest to drive your own car on this route because at some places road is not carpeted. It may get a bit messy if it rains or etc.
There runs private cars b/w Chirtal to Bumburet, you can go through them.
