Local people called this road one of the seven wonders of the world. It passes through Karokoram mountains, more than 1300 kilometers length. It’s the main trading route between Pakistan and China.

The N-35 Karakoram Highway (KKH) connects China and Pakistan and is also known as the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway. It was constructed in 1966 and covers a distance of 1,300km.
It is a significant road because it travels over the Karakoram mountain range and through the Khunjerab Pass, rising to an elevation of 4,693m or 15,397 feet. It is also considered to be the 7th most dangerous road in the world owing to the frequent landslides, flooding, intense snowfall and avalanches.
Despite its somewhat sinister reputation it is such an amazing road. Due to its engineering and construction, it is sometimes referred to as the 8th wonder of the world.
I was lucky enough to drive the KKH between the towns of Bunji in the Gilgit-Baltistan region and Sost in the Hunza Valley. I had driven from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan on the S1 Highway to Bunji.
Sost is the last trading town before the Khunjerab Pass and the Chinese border.
The border crossing on the Khunjerab Pass is the highest paved border crossing in the world.
The beauty and magnificence of the scenery you experience as you drive this road, is hard to describe. I visited in May and so there were clear blue skies, bright sunshine and snow capped mountains. The road is also cut through the mountains.
Despite it being the main link between China and Northern Pakistan, it wasn’t busy.
You can expect the odd hold up. There was a landslide on the road that I got held up in. The authorities work hard to open the road up again as quickly as possible.
There are also Police check points along the road, particularly when entering towns or leaving one district to enter another.
The Police will check your passport and visa.
There are so many opportunities to take photographs and just enjoy your wonderful surroundings.
There are also plenty of places to stop for drinks, food and comfort breaks.
If you do get the chance don’t be afraid to drive the road. The actual construction of the road is good and although there are some hair-raising parts, the sense of freedom and achievement it gives back to you is second to none.

This very long road is one of the most scenic in the world, as well as being one of the rare paved stretches of northern Pakistan. It allows you to quickly reach the Chinese border between very high mountains and snowy peaks all year round.

The Karakoram Road (KKH) is one of the best drives I have ever experienced. It is a magnificent work of engineering, stretching between majestic mountains and stunning valleys.
A trip along the KKH is a true adventure. You'll pass through winding roads and climb high above the valley. The views you encounter along this journey are truly amazing, from snowy peaks to clear rivers.
Apart from its natural beauty, KKH also offers the opportunity to interact with local residents and experience its rich culture. Small markets along the road serve delicious food and interesting handicraft items.
KKH is a trip that will provide an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a wilderness adventure and wants to experience the magic of the Himalayas. Thank you KKH for this wonderful experience.

La Karakoram Highway collega Pakistan e Cina attraverso il Khunerjab Pass il che ne fa una delle strade più alte al mondo raggiungendo gli oltre 4700 metri di quota. Da una quindicina d’anni è stata allargata e resa adatta al traffico pesante per cui è meno avventurosa di prima ma l’ambiente e i paesaggi con le alte montagne attorno sono comunque uno spettacolo.

Passing by Passu cathedral peak. One on the most beautiful village on the KKH. I enjoyed the view around Passu. The roads are super smooth.

Hello I saw your post about the a Karakoram Highway. Can you tell me how you completed your journey? Did you do it on your own, hire a driver or go through a company. My wife and I are planning to do it in July. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

My trip to the Khunjerab Pass along the Karakorum Highway was many years ago. I traveled with some friends in a private car belonging to one of them. Please do take the advice of your Embassy regarding security before you embark upon your proposed trip. If they provide you the needed clearance. We have a saying which translates to "Come Often and welcome"!

Hi, Naran is not situated on this Highway, rather it is approached from Manshera, Hazara via a side road. To get back to the highway you would have to come back to Manshera. Yes, there are toilets located in Petrol Pumps and hotels all along the route.

Hi. Can anyone advise about the current road conditions (end Feb 2019) up to Khunjerab? How far can one drive, given that there would be snow in that area.
