Been coming here for over a decade because we have a cabin in Arnold. It’s a family style low key kind of place. Has two highs speed chairs in addition to a handful of dinosaurs so if there is enough snow it’s a great place. The bottom black section used to be some of the best bowls and bumps but the lower altitude means it’s never open. 2022-3 was a record setting year and it wasn’t open.
The real problem with this place is the “ski team” I added the quotes because the vast majority of the “team” are just kids in day-camp. There is an actual race team with maybe a dozen kids. Why is this a problem? Because on weekends that they are here the parking lot, dining facilities and lifts are overwhelmed. Look, we have kids who ski- I have no problem with encouraging it! But, they are allowed, en masse, to skip the lift line. Picture a 10’ wait on a chair and 50 (I’m not exaggerating) team kids and their coaches take the next 10 chairs. The parents show up an hour before the lifts open and camp out all the dining tables. The level of self entitled behavior is absurd. We sat down and ate (food purchased at BV) and the attached photo was of someone’s obvious lunch stuff in a Trader Joe’s bag. Nobody came to sit down even after we were done and left. Most of the other tables were similarly ’reserved’ with outside food.
I think this resort needs to make a decision: either decrease the size of the ski team and make them stand in lift lines like everyone else, make it exclusively a race team with tryouts etc so it’s more limited, or don’t open for the rest of us riff-raff whose season passes and $50 lunches, $20 premium parking are apparently second tier relative to the team. Skiing shouldn’t be this much hassle at a small local hill.

We've been goin to Bear Valley for many years. The lodge is nice with a shuttle to the ski area. It is possible to get down to the village from the slope. There is enough variety of black slopes for me on ski and my kids on snowboards. It is a good value for the money. There are also snowmobile rental, one easy site in the village, and a long trail few miles away, with great views in winder time.

We were pretty disappointed in the operation of this beautiful mountain resort. I could name countless issues, but in sum, it is very clear there is little to no management layer nor investment. This is evident in management of processes, inventory, basic hospitality, maintenance, food service, etc. Most of the employees were lovely but could see some of them were demoralized.
This is not just a staffing issue. Simple changes could be made to improve the experience. I hope the management co. starts to deliver.

Neglected, badly run ski resort. From old and unsafe two chair lifts. Through lack of signage or maps. Operators who don't pay attention and lifts that break down (hundred skiers got stuck on the main and only lift up the mountain when I was there... Had to be lowered by ropes) When I asked the management why they don't even have a map of the runs... They said it crumbled more then a year ago and they never bothered getting a new one. That summarizes how they run the place. Lots of potential, but badly run. Doubt I will come back.

Visited Bear Valley to snowboard during COVID-19 and they did an incredible job of enforcing wearing masks and social distancing. They had strict requirements for mask and the standard ski mask was not good enough. They did have approved masks for people to use.
The slopes themselves were beautiful and well groomed. The drive up was a breeze and parking was super easy. They had grab and go food with some limited outdoor seating. Would be nice if they reserved that limited seating to those who purchased food their rather than those who brought in their own food.
I ordered at the outdoor BBQ and the food was really good. The bar was closed but they did have beer, wine, seltzers, and a fantastic pre-made cocktail option.
The road conditions up were great and did not require to put chains but required you have them with you. Always check road conditions on CalTrans website and don't rely on past reviews.

2 families of five went up for the day. We pre-purchased four lift tix and six kid lesson packages. Upon arrival, we were told that half the lifts were closed( including the beginner slope) and that the magic carpet wasn't working. Cool no problem- stuff happens, email would have been cool since we dropped major $$ for the day but moving on. We arrived around 1030 with no lines for check in and literally got bounced around from department to department so many times that it took us until Noon to get out to the snow. Again, cool - you guys clearly need to work on efficiency but I'm still not mad. The sole reason why I am writing this is that they were so incredibly rude that is was exhausting to manage our kids and their attitudes all at the same time. The teachers for the children were lovely but everyone else's attitude was on another level. We unfortunately will not be back there again. I'd rather spend our almost $2k we dropped that day somewhere that wants it.

I have very fond memories of Bear Valley. The hill is just that, a hill (upper half) but they do have great tree skiing on the back side and a fantastic mogul run under the chair right down the middle of "Bear Chair" Also the lower part of the mountain is my all-time favorite on a cold powder day or spring slush. So why the low rating? The bottom of the hill is almost never open ( low elevation/ global warming) as well as never been groomed, and the price jumped from $60 to $120! What a JOKE. If you are going to spend that kind of money head to a real resort. Also, runs are short but rarely a crowd.

It is a nice place to stay at. it is a 5 stars, no, is it a 3 stars.. no as well.
but it is not that horrible if you are there not for the place it self, but for the area and to enjoy your self.
- Shower water can't be fixed on a specific temperature, while taking a shower, you will get burned and then get cold water on you without touching the faucet.
- Carpet inside the room and outside looks like haven't been cleaned in a decade.
- Lantern in the room doesn't work.
- Room price shows as $154 (see picture), but I paid $270, I have no idea why. but having family with me, I didn't want to negotiate.
- On that same token, they did tell me it was a minimum of 2 nights, but they will accommodate me for just one night, but never said if I will be charged for 2!!

We took a family vacation to bear Valley it was an awesome experience we stayed in a cabin that we had to snowmobile into the kids loved it and we spent a whole day on the tubing Hill

First time visiting Bear Valley. We had a great time. It's a smaller resort than ones in Tahoe. But more affordable and not congested. We really enjoyed our time here. I definitely recommend it for families with young ones.

I attended a Warren Miller film in San Luis Obispo and received a ski pass.
I'm hoping to use it before Jan 3, 2017 around the holidays.
