Beautiful hike to see Alamere Falls

Beautiful hike! Get to the Palomarin trial early as the parking lot fills up. Make sure you research low tide times before you go so you can walk on the beach by the falls. The trail was nice/little bit of mud. There are shaded areas & full sun areas (wear layers). There was a bathroom in the trailhead parking lot. There is a ocean trail & coastal trail split - we took the ocean & walked next to the ocean/bluffs (more scenic). Lots of poison oak. The falls were really flowing due to all the recent rain!

Small waterfall after a nice hike

This is an extremely popular hike. When we arrived late in the afternoon, the parking lot was full. We were hopeful that we might miss the morning rush by arriving later in the day. It seems that there is not exactly a "good" time to arrive for this hike. The drive from the bay area is really beautiful. For me, the drive along Bolinas Lagoon alone made the trip worthwhile. The hike is well marked. Do not try to find short cuts to the waterfalls. When we arrived on the beach, we could see hikers above the falls trying to find a way down to the beach. The amount of time those hikers spent seeking a way to the beach easily exceeded the amount of time to remain on the trail and hike safely on to the beach. This is a small waterfall but it is quite a site to see the water falling on the beach below.

THERE IS NO "ALAMERE FALLS TRAIL" - NOT ACCESSIBLE FROM BASS LAKE/PALOMARIN TRAIL HEAD

AVOID PALOMARIN TRAIL HEAD IF YOU ARE GOING TO ALAMERE FALLS.

First off - this trail head has been ruined by social media and articles in news websites -- if you don't arrive at the parking lot by 9 or 9:30am -- don't bother trying because it will be full. This was not the case prior to the pandemic.

Second -- there is not a trail from Bass Lake to Alamere falls. It's heavily covered with poison oak, there are ticks and it's steep and rutted. You will see signs that say "trail closure" please respect the signs and do not attempt to descend to Alamere Falls from Bass Lake.

Finally - don't just take your garbage with you from Bass Lake -- take as much garbage as you can carry. People are NOT doing anyone a courtesy by leaving their cheap inflatable rafts with a slow leak or food or whatever for others. Leave no trace -- that means you aren't supposed to cut the poison oak on the closed trail to Alamere lake, you aren't supposed to leave garbage, no stone cairns, no graffiti -- just no.

People do not go to this place to hear your music on your bluetooth speaker or your phone conversations on speaker. Just no.

Here is the official NPS link for the falls -- along with recommendations for how to actually get to the falls without causing damage to the park:

Five Brooks
The Five Brooks Trailhead is located approximately ten minutes by car from the Bear Valley Visitor Center. There are two vault toilets at this trailhead, along with garbage and recycling receptacles. There is no potable water available. From Five Brooks, the minimum hiking distance to Alamere Falls is 7.1 miles (11.4 km); the minimum distance by bicycle is 7.8 miles (12.5 km).

This is definitely NOT a place to go if you want peace & quiet, you'll be surrounded by loud people hiking in large groups. Please do not bring large groups here.

Impressive waterfall

We visited after a week of rain, and so the falls were very impressive. We started at the Palomarin Trail Head and took the longer route up to the Wildcat Campground and then down to the beach and back up the beach about a mile to the waterfall. The entire hike was long, but easy and beautiful, with constantly changing scenery. While it would normally be nice to walk on the beach, the day we were there, it was very windy and cold - and a bit of a struggle walking against the wind, but still worth the effort. There is also a shortcut, which is more difficult at the end - in fact, you need to hold onto ropes to descend to the beach, near the waterfall. We decided not to take that route, as we were out for the hike and not just to see the waterfall. Note that there are restrooms at the Palomarin Trail Head and at the Wildcat Campground.

You need to be in good shape.

As with most places worth seeing of the beaten path these waterfalls are well worth the hike but you need to be in shape. There are tall cliffs to climb and narrow paths. The trail signs say "Trail not maintained Very dangerous Conditions" It is not really dangerous it is just hard. BUT WORTH IT.

Man wandert ca. 1,5 Std. zu den Falls. Man muss aufpassen das man die Abbiegung nicht verpasst bei der es vom Ocean Trail runter zu den Falls geht. Der Weg von den oberen Falls runter zum Strand ist sehr steil und sicherlich nicht jedermanns Ding. Es gibt hier keine Kletterhilfen. Die Wanderung ist aber aus meiner Sicht sehr lohnenswert.

Easy and long OR difficult and Short!

As many people have written here there are 2 paths to this spectacular view. We did both ways and to be honest I was scared on the way back using the short cut. It did cut down significant miles from our hike but tread carefully!

Fantastic place but descent to beach is dangerous

Point Reys doesn't recommend to visit these falls and main trail even doesn't have sign when you need to turn to see Alamere falls. But if you are adventorous hiker the it is definitely worth it. We were in the beginning of July and Falls were great. trail to the beach is dangerous but doable.

Months before my family visited, I went on hikes to see what 10-14 mile hikes would feel like. I’m 43 and fairly active but this was still somewhat difficult for me. There are two places to start this hike, we chose the Palomarin Trailhead. If you take the shortcut it will shave off a few miles. The trail is normally marked by rocks and is about 4.7 miles into the hike. Another .5 mile and you are to the falls. The descent down to the beach is very steep and does require some toosh scooting. If you are afraid of heights or not in decent shape, this may not be the hike for you. Another family had taken the long way around to avoid the steep decent but was unable to return due to high tide. We watched them try to go that way and initially get slammed up against the rocks when the waves crashed in. This hike has several rescues reported every year, so do your research before you go. There is an excellent website with detailed information called World-of-Waterfalls.com.

Great Hike with lots of views

Ocean, Lake, Woods, Waterfall. Great hike, constant elevation change, Beautiful views. Bring bathing suit, mosquito repellent, and lots of water to drink.
