We didn't come for a traditional visit be we went to a friend's wedding and the set up was very nice.

We were very impressed with video at the welcome center and the story of Leo Carrillo’s life and commitment to this ranch and the state of California. The main hacienda was beautifully maintained and the landscaping is spectacular. So, why 4 stars? Either through the fault of the attraction or Trip Advisor the opening time for Sunday is listed here as 11am. We arrived then and found that the park opened at 9 and that we had missed the 10am guided tour. I just reported this to Trip Advisor, so hopefully they’ll make the change and others won’t miss out on part of the experience as we did.

This is a jewel of Carlsbad. A beautiful ranch with lots of history behind it. Peacocks walk the property. Lots of wildflowers now. The scent of orange blossoms in the air. Great for history buffs, families and anyone who enjoys the outdoors. There are picnic tables.

A wonderful experience into the past. Who knew Leo was such wonderful actor in his time. His homestead shows his love of his culture and heritage.

No sign at the entrance that roughly half the site was closed for a wedding. The hacienda and several other primary locations were closed off. Wish we would have known that as we wouldn’t have gone or would have tried to go a different day. We went on a Sunday afternoon. Another location was closed for a different “event” so about all we could see was the visitor center, the stable, and some of the garden area back to the “original gate.” Events should be scheduled for after hours, not when people are trying to visit.

Nice ranch and history but many of the buildings were closed on a weekday. I had been here four years ago and enjoyed seeing the inside of the ranch house. I was told by docents that the only way you get to see the inside is if you go on a tour (check schedule). It wasn’t like that a few years back but I’d suggest doing so because you aren’t getting the full experience unless you get to see the interior of the buildings including the stables, etc. I liked that the movie they show at the visitor center is closed captioned! Nice gift shop, too.

What a beautiful site and what a remarkable man who used his influence for good. I had thought of him only as Poncho, Cisco's sidekick in the early 1950s. Well worth the short ride from DT Carlsbad. The ranch is a botanical gem and a photographer's paradise. Do watch the 13 minute video in the Visitor center. The staff is very knowledgable and bring Leo to life for you. It's free but they will take a free-will donation.

I only knew of Leo Carrillo as Poncho in the TV series The Cisco Kid. We found out that he performed in Broadway plays prior to his Hollywood film career from 1920 to 1950. From 1937 to 1961 this was a working ranch a re-creation of an early Spanish and Mexican lifestyle. Leo rebuilt and added buildings using adobe bricks, made with earth and water baked in the sun. Leo was well respected and was known as Mr. California. For 18 years he served on the State Beaches and Parks Commission. Leo Carrillo Beach was named after him. Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and many other movie stars spent time at the ranch. The City of Carlsbad bought the remaining 10.5 acres of the original 1,750 acre ranch. They keep the building locked and we were lucky enough to find a guide who took us through the buildings. Small fee

I learned about Leo Carillo who was Pancho in Cixco Kid, one of my older brother’s favorite shows. It was interesting and a beautiful place. We saw at least 3 peacocks or peafowl and heard several more crying out. Since it was free, you can’t beat the price!

We would be visiting with three kids (7,6, and 4). Would this be interesting to them or would age do them some good :)

They would like the nature walk around the grounds and may like some of the "old buildings/ranch". Not a lot of things for kids such as rides. There are free range peacocks that some kids get a real kick out of.
