Bidwell Mansion is a magnificent, large, historic mansion built by California pioneer and Chico founder John Bidwell. A land grantee under the Mexican government in the 1840s, he developed his rancho on this land into what eventually became the city of Chico. He remained a prominent and successful leader, and important figure in California politics and society after the US took California from Mexico, with US presidents as guests at his wedding. He built this mansion in the 1860s with the latest plumbing and gas lighting. This, combined with its opulence and large size, being 3 storeys with 26 rooms, make it one of the most important California landmarks of that period, and very unusual for this region for that time. There is much information in Bidwell and his wife, Annie, and the mansion contains original furniture and items belonging to them. It is located on the northern edge of downtown Chico, next to Chico State University and Bidwell Park, which extends fro many miles into the foothills.
The grounds are open to visit but to go inside, one must pay for the guided tour, which is offered at specific times on set days. The tour is worth it and is fascinating.

This mansion is full of historical displays as well as its unique building design. The attendents are very helpful.

Unfortunately, the mansion and visitor center were closed right now due to the COVID. HOPEFULLY, we can go again when it is opened.

This is an important historic mansion in California, home of an important figure in both the Mexican/Californio-era of California and the U.S. settlement, as well as founder of Chico.
The mansion has been nicely restored and there is even still some original furniture. It houses a museum on the Bidwells and their important role in 19-century California and the development of their large, self-sufficient rancho at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley and its subsequent transformation into the the town of Chico.
There is a guided tour which is extremely informative. The place also has a nice gift shop. It is set in lovely grounds on the edge of downtown where the university adjoins downtown and the western end of the large Bidwell Park. Thus is a must-see visit for anyone in the area, especially if interested in history and early California.

Our guide was interesting, well informed. Mansion has been restored with great care. Anyone who enjoys another slice of history will have a great 45 minutes on the tour.

This was a great opportunity to learn about a California pioneer and to see the beautiful home he built. We had a spectacular tour guide; he was a wealth of information and could answer every question the visitors threw at him. The home is on the edge of the Chico State campus, so we went on a mini campus tour after the home tour was complete.

Really interesting to see an old residence that was certainly the finest home in the county when it was built. The "garage" is a "carriage house". The bathrooms are state of the art (indoor plumbing). I liked the kitchen the best!

Be prepared to stand around a lot and walk up stairs. The guides are super knowledgeable about Chico history and provide a fun experience. Kids need to be old enough to have some patience and be quiet enough not to run and make noise.
