I booked this tour for my husband since he loves to work with wood but I thoroughly enjoyed this tour as well! The history and craftsmanship was amazing and so so interesting. Shawn (sp?) was our tour guide and she was excellent. We had a private tour, since it just ended up being my husband and I. She answered all of our many questions and gave us so much related trivia that we would never have found out on our own.
The grounds is rustic but interesting to wander around in as well. The horse that pulls the buggy in oldtown Eureka also resides on the property. We were able to meet her and her handler as well as he gave her a bath.
I totally recommend a visit and a tour at this spot.

I was visiting my brother in Eureka last month, and we toured the Blue Ox Millworks and Historic Village. What an amazing place!
The village is a collection of buildings relocated from other areas, and they are dedicated to types of craftsmanship. There are SO many areas in the buildings to explore! They have woodworking, ceramics, glassworks, printing, signage, weaving, blacksmithing, and other crafts. The crew even built a replica of the hearse that carried Lincoln’s coffin for the memorial trip from DC to Springfield, 150 years later. They also hand-crafted a redwood table for President Clinton's Presidential Library.
Because the buildings are working sites, visitors must be careful as they walk through each area. Thankfully, all the walkways are of sturdy recent construction--even the catwalk on the second floor of the main building. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides, and visitors may have the opportunity to see craftsmen at work; on our visit, there was a gentleman working on a sign for a local ballpark. He stopped what he was doing and talked through the process of converting an artist's sketch to a finished, billboard-sized sign. It was fascinating to see!
The grounds are lovely and have views of Humboldt Bay from the top of the rise. There are gardens planted in various sites around the village, and it is very pretty in the spring.
For a unique experience of immersion into craftworks, I definitely recommend a visit to The Blue Ox!

We had an amazing time here. Eric Hollenbeck gave us a tour of his property. He is a true Renaissance Man. He had his own forge to cast metal. He could do blacksmithing. He had his own small lumber mill. He had the only machine left in the country which still made wooden gutter. He also has a fully functioning mill works shop. Besides all this, he has been helping troubled youth for 20 years teaching them trades. He was outrageously generous with his time.

Most of the Trip Advisor reviewers have covered all the bullet points about Blue Ox. We had the pleasure of meeting Eric Hollenbeck, owner and founder, and watch him using his giftedness. Monica, gave us an excellent tour and demonstration on a couple of the Barnes antique working peddle power machinery. If you want to see everything, allow at least 2 hours.
Impressive and interesting even if you are not into Millworks, blacksmithing or old stuff.

We brought our 10 and 13 year old grandkids (is that “family with teenagers?”} to see the millworks that we have visited a couple of times before. First we took them to look at the Carson Mansion so that they could see the end product of the sort of things the mill makes. We were given a demonstration of some of the old carpentry tools that are still in working order and still being used to make one of a kind pieces for Victorian houses. There are also old printing presses and many other hands-on artisan crafts. There are horses and cats. It is all rather scruffy but very authentic.

The machines are 100 plus years old and being used to product products. Not only can they replicate historically correct work work, but also the forge can make metal pieces. I recommend taking a tour as you learn so much more.

Blue Ox is a combination of historical exhibits, local trade school, and a working shop for Victorian house restoration.
During our vist, the buildings of the logging skid camp were pretty run-down. That line between rustic authenticity and neglected junkyard may have been crossed more than once. Other buildings, such as the sawmill and blacksmith shop were closed for repair.
That being said, the main building was worth the visit by itself. Their collection of human-powered tools from Barnes Manufacturing dates back to the late 1800's. You can see the evolution of the scroll saws and routers from standing treadle power to a seated, geared pedal system. The table saw is hand-cranked to a high RPM and cuts palnks easily. Remarkably, it also features a built-in stock feeder for hands-free cutting.
The building also has an exhibit of the Lincoln Funeral Hearse. The Blue Ox craftsmen and students built a replica for the 150th commemoration of Lincoln's death. Working from the only known photograph, they contructed the highly ornamented replica. Remarkable.

There is nothing like this place on the Bay. Great for the entire family to learn how things were once made...and still are. This crew made an exact replica on the Lincoln Hearse, complete with gold touches. It made the trip from California to WDC a few years ago. Historic.

There are many interesting and historic parts to this Humboldt County wood mill tour. Most of the milling equipment is still in working order. Do not miss the giant 14' lathe. The mill also serves as a trade school. Provide at least 2 hours to read and see all of the exhibits.
Wonderful visit to Humboldt County's past.

We had some time left in our trip so we found the Blue Ox. The place is old and rustic condition. With that said we had a wonderful time. It was like stepping back in time. The staff were very friendly and made us feel welcomed. You will see very old machines used to cut, shape wood. You will see old type set equipment and an eclectic collection of the past. It was worth the visit!!

Hi, I was wondering if you have any classes in addition to the tours? We will be passing through Eureka on July 31st and would like to come by.

I did see on their web site that arrangements can be made for groups to have a hands-on experience. Eric is very welcoming!
