First of all I will begin by the wonderful beauty of the nature surrounding you. The Archipelago, marine life, colors, and islands are just stunning. Unfortunately the Unique natural environment is ruined by the impact of the human being in the area. Too many boat tours and way too many boats are allowed to impact on the pristine atmosphere of the place. The wildlife is definitely affected by the amount of visitors and by the ignorance of local guides. Such a wonderful Natural Park would deserve Natural Geographic Guides, Scientists, and Researchers to introduce limitate numbers of people to the delicate landscape and environment. In reality you will experience a very commercial tour. No relevant information are provided by poorly trained local guides who don’t add a single info to the ones you already carry with you by years of BBC and National Geographic documentaries. At the end of the day it is so sad to acknowledge how poor tourism-concept can negatively affect travelers experience and local environment.
PS the Komodo dragons are obviously fed by the local “rangers” to keep them always around a designated “meeting point”. In fact all the visitors end up taking the same fake pictures in the same fake wild environment. Sad Sad Sad

My visit to Komodo National Park was profoundly underwhelming. After seeing many documentary this was a dream but I found nothing to justify its status as a "National Park." Thousands of visitors’ flock to the same spots simultaneously, creating a chaotic and overcrowded atmosphere.
The animals, particularly the Komodo dragons, are systematically besieged by a mass of tourists who approach them to take photograph. The “rangers” do not give you any information about the dragons life but they spend their time to take pics of the well-fed dragons in a designated spot with tourist. The tour last 45 minutes and it is less than 500 meter around the “forest”. People spend lot of money to see the national park and have an authentic experience. It is a real scam.
The bathroom in the island is really in bad conditions. My suggestion is to visit the beautiful Island around but avoid the Komodo Dragon Island.
Though you will find plastic and cans in the sea, on the beach on any national Park and it will only get worse. Shame on this government having let this happen.

We were on Flores for 4 days and spent one day going to Komodo NP and the adjacent Islands. Despite seeing 2 Komodo dragons fighting, the whole tour was very underwhelming and disappointing. Even going in low season, there were several dozen boats and hundreds of people doing the same, all hoping to see a dragon.
The boat left at 7am, stopping at the first island for a planned hike to a high point. Again, hundreds of people took off in the heat and sun and filed one after another for the steep climb. Looking across toward the deserted, beautiful beach, we headed that way and had a quiet, lovely walk.
Once at Komodo NP, each group was greeted by a ranger, given a brief orientation, and then groups of 25 to 40 people headed out walking very fast in search of the dragons. It soon became clear that this was the ranger's focus, and there was no time to really learn about the park or dragons. Once a dragon was spotted, the main focus seemed to be getting a picture taken in front of it. Another time, a young dragon (who tend to avoid people) was spotted, and the ranger and large group did its best to chase it down the trail. Because my husband could not keep up with the fast pace nor climb to the rocky top, the ranger in the back took us on a private tour for the remainder of our time. So, a disturbing tour turned into a better experience for the 2 of us, where we were able to ask questions, learn about the park and dragons, and witness 2 dragons fighting.
At the other island stops that were stunningly beautiful, hundreds of people were smoking and throwing their buds on the ground, and forming many circles to dance, yell, and sing, while being recorded with drones.
Honestly, this whole experience seemed like a tourist trap where dragons were being followed and harassed. There seemed to be no regard for maintaining the national park. There was trash on the ground, the toilets were filthy, and there was little focus on learning about this world heritage site.

Our tour boat left at 6am so we were able to see the sunrise on the water and it turned out to be a beautiful and sunny (hot) day! We visited several islands before going to the Komodo National Park island where we hiked for almost 2 hours to see a couple large dragons and take pictures. They were very docile and didn’t move even when the ranger poked them with a stick.
So, the explanation we got was that they had already eaten their big lunch (which could have been a deer, water buffalo or wild boar) and that they were ‘napping’ with full bellies. Other reviewers have written about the possibility of the dragons being drugged so they can be seen by the tourists? Not sure? But, it seemed that the rangers knew exactly where to find the adult ones….There was a young komodo that ran across our path and was quite active. Apparently, the young ones hide up in the trees because the adult Komodos hunt them as well.
Everyone lined up to have their pictures taken at a very close range to one of the adult Komodos that was resting by the end of the trail. There must have been 50 people in a line that took a while to finish with everyone’s pictures and that dragon never moved!! It really did seem like this was a staged photo opp. It was scary to be that close but the ranger said it was safe! They are reportedly naturally aggressive and very dangerous.
We flew many hours from Canada just to see them in the wild and in their natural environment. So our goal and bucket list items were accomplished. Even though at the beginning of the hike, we were told there was no guarantee of seeing any Komodos, the ranger kept saying he will find one! It was worth the trek (in 38 degree, hot and humid weather) so see these massive creatures on the island. However, we wouldn’t need to see them again…the whole day of island hopping and being in the Komodo National Park was a great ‘once-in-a- lifetime’ experience for us.

We stopped by Komodo National Park as part of our tour. We arrived at 10.30 am on a Thursday - not many tour groups there yet. Our assigned Ranger explained the rules and we walked the short path - which took about an hour to complete.
We found a sleepy Large Male Komodo Dragon laying there near the water pit. Able to take pics and the Ranger kept making noises , so the Komodo would open his eyes and move his head. Don’t know if it was sedated or not as other reviewers have mentioned or if it was just sleepy and waiting for prey.
We walked around the path but didn’t find any other Komodos but did see Wild Boar & Deers.
When we walked back to the souvenir market, we did run into another small female Komodo, who was drinking water next to one of the small buildings. She was more active than the Male one and walked away after drinking.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the government should invest into better facilities like bathroom and cafes. We sat at one of the vendors to get something to drink and it smelled like fumes. Hope they invest the income from visitor fees into the Park for future Generations of Komodo Dragons if they don’t use it to update the Facilities there.

We went to the komodo island as part of our boat cruise from Flores to Lombok.
When arriving on the jetty it already felt a bit off, this feeling unfortunately became a reality.
We were told the dragons were super dangerous and their we no guarantee we would see them. Our “ranger” directly went to a random tree, and there were 3 completely drugged / sedated komodo dragons. One tried to move but all it could do was to move their head.
Ranger told us they are not drugged and fed. But please read other reviews, you will see the dragons everyday at the same trees. I would not be surprised that they sedate them during the day and chain them when the tourists are gone, so that the tourists see the komodo dragons the next day for sure.
After a 30 mins walk we were led to some tourist market with all kinds of komodo merch.
We really had a nasty feeling after this trip.
The animals look majestic, that is true. But i wished I checked google reviews / trip advisor before going on the island.
This is really similar to the tiger & elephant tourist traps in Thailand..

We visited the Komodo Island Natural Park driven by curiosity to see some wilderness and Komodo dragons.
The chilling sight we witnessed was finding "randomly" along the path of about an hour 3 beached dragons evidently sedated, because motionless in an unnatural position, ready to be photographed (we had the suspicion that they had been placed there by the same guides ..).
The guides took pictures of tourists 1 meter away from the animals in hunting trophy style, without any respect for their dignity.
More than a nature park it looks like a zoo or worse a circus.

We all loved the experience. Too many people, though but we had a chance to see two active dragons, one pretty sedated (just guessing) and a little one by the rocks nearby the beach.

It was my great wish to see the park and especially to see the dragon. Unfortunately though:
- just 300m from the entrance you find a dragon, drugged, specially arranged in place for tourist photos that the rangers are very skilled at taking .. an unrewarding and unfortunately violent show in the comforts of the animal. You can see it in the picture.
In addition:
. the trek that should have lasted an hour and a half actually closes in 20m!!
- rangers are not motivated to describe the habitat of the dragon, much less the characteristics of the dragon, nothing at all. On demand they answer with monosyllables.
I honestly would have preferred to see a different park organization. If the park is... They could increase the cost of admission, limit access and allow a real trek, of a few hours, in the morning to see, even in the distance, the dragon.

Hi there .... can you make your own way to the Dragon park (say by taxi) and then buy a guided walk ticket from there (as opposed to paying $120 for the organised tour from the cruise ship) ???

As of our visit in late 2018, the shortest way for an independent traveler to visit Komodo Island was to fly to Labuanbajo Airport, walk or take a taxi to the center of town (which was quite small), and book a private tour by launch. We chose a daylong boat trip including an hour or two hiking through dragon habitat but also stopping to snorkel and to view manta rays. Our guide took realistic trick shots making it appear that we were petting a Komodo dragon. Although I suffered from amoebiasis from a mandi bath that week, I could enjoy the tour as it was not strenuous.

Ciao

We are on a cruise ship going to Komodo Island and believe we must book a tour to be able to leave the ship and see the dragons. The ship tour says high level of fitness and 1 hour of walking. Can anyone please tell me is this a flat stroll or hoofing it up a hill? Roughly how many km are covered? Is it easy or hard walking? Any info would be appreciated (we have a young child and unfit adults)
