Moaning caverns are gorgeous. We did the 3 hour expedition tour aka Spelunking and it was amazing, breathtaking, crazy and challenging…way more intense than expected but a lifetime memory!!!

Attempted to go here twice! First time we were unsuccessful, they need better directions and signage! Second time, we found it. No, not Eureka! We ended up not taking the tour as my wife was afraid that she couldn't physically do it. Additionally, the timing of the next tour and the length of it we not user friendly. Perhaps on another trip.

20 dollars is too much for visiting this cave.
It looks better in the brochure than in reality.
The black dude guide was asked some questions, and apart from the typical stuff he didnt know the answer. After years you can expect they look for the new questions. Its not just to release a speech.
I have seen better caves much cheaper.
You can pay like 10 bucks for this. Not more. It was disapointing.

It was our 2nd time for the tour but first for our daughter. She had a great time and it was interesting and adventurous enough to keep her mind off all the stair climbing. We all enjoyed it with our pleasant and friendly guide, Bernard. He gave us all the info needed and there were few questions from our group.
Since it had been several years since we last visited, I had forgotten about the cooler temp of 55 degrees underground and left my down vest and hoodie at our cabin. Luckily, I found an extra hoodie and sweater in the trunk for my daughter and I. We had worn flannels, but the extra layer was definitely more comfortable.
Also, there are many warnings given about ducking in the low spots but I had a cap on and the bill made it difficult to see what was coming and I did bump my head a couple times. I wore it to keep my head warm but would suggest a beanie for next time.
Lastly, arrive early to get a time slot. We planned to get there at 10a but arrived just before 11. We only had to wait an hour for the next tour. But we saw some people at 11:30 trying to get a tour and they had to come back for the 1:30.

tldr: Do not come here with young kids if the tour guide is Michael (I am fairly sure that was his name). He is rude, condescending and displays a strong dislike towards young children, regardless of how quiet or well behaved. Similarly, if your child is very inquisitive and asks a lot of questions, make sure you have a different tour guide, as Michael struggled to keep his train of thought with even the barest whisper of a sound, let alone someone asking actual questions, and he looks for others to blame. He was very unprofessional.
First off, I really enjoy caves in general: their formation, their surprising chillness, the stillness of the air and the beautiful structures that took thousands of years to form. I've been to dozens of caves, as a child and as an adult, with my kids and without. I spent my 30th birthday spelunking through caves, shimmying through tight quarters and crossing an underground lake by boat. I'm a big cave fan and have the utmost respect for the tour guides who educate the public on them.
Now, to the review. My tour of Mercer Cavern was, hands down, the worst tour I have ever experienced. We were a party of twelve (6 adults and 6 children ages 2-5). There were two other older women who were not in our party, for a total of 14 on the tour. I had called ahead to make sure there was no age minimum and that kids age 2 to 5 were welcomed. I was told they were welcomed, as long as we didn't carry the kids in backpacks (but carrying in your arms or in front-loading carriers was ok) and helped them navigate the stairs. Great! Given we were shelling out $150 ($19 per adult + $11 for children ages 3-12), we wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any issues ahead of time.
Before we even started the tour, our guide, Michael, was grumpy and irritable. A 4-year old asked if she could go to the bathroom before the tour started, and he told her no, even though she could have easily just missed the 5 minute preamble outside of the cave. He started complaining about the kids well before our group was even assembled. We told him that we understood that if any started crying, that parent and child would exit the tour. Of course we wouldn't ruin the tour for the others.
We thought that his attitude and bitterness would calm down after the start of the tour - but it only got worse. I admit our children were not 100% silent, but they didn't chatter, nor did they cry. They didn't make much more sounds than adults. But ANY sound was too much for Michael and he kept making rude comment after comment, complaining that the kids were going too slowly (which was inaccurate, as the adults generally carried the kids down stairs, and the older women accompanying us were slower). He also kept complaining that the tour would take an hour and a half at the rate we were going, despite the fact that the main reason the tour was dragging was because he was continuously complaining about kids being present, instead of giving us information about the caves, and he got into the habit of waiting 10-20 seconds to ensure he had 100% silence before he started his spiel (he as on a bit of a power trip, to be honest)).
Within 10 minutes, he asked the two women whether they wanted to hear the tour. They said yes (as did we all!). He then said that he would not give the tour if my group continued with them, and he would just lead us through the tour in silence. We weren't going to ruin the tour for the 2 women, and this man's anger and blustering was wearing on us, so we just exited the way we came. Upon our departure, one of the other women apologized to me about the way the tour guide was acting.
Perhaps other tour guides here are better, but I will never be back to try them.

Reservation or ticketing process needs to be better. Can't buy tickets over the phone or online and no update on how many can go per group or how many slots are left for each tour time. You can reserve for groups. I called ahead and was told to just come on over and buy the tickets in the gift shop and no problem. We drove 45 minutes only to be told the last three tours of the day were already booked. I ask how can they be booked if reservations are not taken. I was told people will show up early in the morning and buy their tickets onsite for whatever time tour they want and they're so sorry for the inconvenience but come back another time.
Please improve the ticketing process. While it is a beautiful drive to the caverns, it unnecessarily had me drive and hour and a half.

Beautiful natural cave formations, takes your breath away. The 1-hour guided tour is exhausting if you have knee problems, as you’ll be taking a lot of stairs up and down, but totally worth it. We were lucky that we were the only ones in the tour, so it was more of a private tour, I guess not many people visit in January. The variety of rock formations will take your breath away, hard to describe, hopefully the pictures will give you an idea of what you’ll see, though it’s even better in person.

We spent a short weekend in Arnold and was looking for something for us to do (since there was little snow at Bear Valley) and stumbled across Mercer Caverns on this site. A unique tour, be prepared for LOTS of stairs! As you travel down 200+ steps into the earth and view whats underneath you begin to realize how amazing the earth truly is. Our tour guide was nervous (his first solo tour) but did a good job explaining what you're looking at.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a fun outdoor activity, not too far from Sacramento, something to do in a day’s trip. I’m so glad we found the Mercer Caverns! There are actually several caving sites to experience in Calaveras county, and Mercer is the one cave we selected to visit after I did extensive research on cave sites and cave tours in/around the area.
At Mercer, we ended up going on the crawling tour, which is about 3 hours of squirming around the cave with our wonderful guide, Zoe, and two other participants. Huge shout out to Zoe!!! She’s a rockstar! Both tour guide and tour group were great! When we went, it was December and rainy season, so much of the cave was wet and the formations were absolutely beautiful! The trip worth the $100 fee! Everyone was positive and our tour team was very team oriented. At first, I thought I might get nervous or scared, on the trip, inside the cave. There are various exit points to leave the tour early. Sometimes people on the tour freak out. Instead, I embraced the experience entirely. I felt very comfortable and I personally, absolutely loved being underground, exploring, adventuring, and learning the history of the cave! I loved it so much, as we came to the end of the tour, I wanted to go again!
For reference, I am 5 ft. 1 in. and 105 lbs. I felt so comfortable and nimble moving around in tight passages, using my helmet, headlamp, gear and team spirit... all provided for the tour. Our tour guide indicated that kids Love this tour because they’re tiny and can squirm easily thru passages. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a Cali adventure, who is mentally and physically in shape! I would definitely visit these caverns, and explore others in the area, again!
Last note, I hear the caves are busy during summer. I definitely recommend finding a slower season season or time of the year to go. It was nice having a small *positive* tour team in the cave. It felt almost like a private tour.

Ducking down steep stairs (there are rails on each side), with a group of about 15 other people and a knowledgeable guide (Thanks Diane!) made this cave a fun adventure. We went on the 10:30 first tour and it was perfect! It fills up fast because they can only take a limited group of people due to the stairs and platfroms, so I recomend the early tour. By the time we left, it was booked until 2:30 PM. Lots of things to see!

Did anyone go during November or December? Thanks

My wife and I went this summer, and have not visited the cave in November or December, but the answers posted are exactly right. It should be no problem unless the area receives a lot of rain in a short period. In a normal year you should not have any problem. Note: You could encounter snow on the roads in December so check the local weather before going. I hope this helps.
How to make reservations for Mercer cave tour
Seth H
ซานโฮเซ, แคลิฟอร์เนีย22 ผลงาน
When we went tours were on the hour. As we missed the prior hour we had to wait a bit for the next "hour" and by then 3 other groups had arrived. I've not heard you can make reservations but you could call them and ask (if your group is large). Otherwise one tour is around 8 to 10 people.

Depends I think on how senior. A 65 or 70 something in good shape, yes. Older than that maybe not. There are about 2500 steps up and down, at times quite steep.

They sell tickets ahead of time per day, but not way in advance. Best to swing by the office in the morning when they open and purchase Tix for afternoon, then shop around Murphy's until your time

As others have said, especially your shoes. Be sure your laces are tucked in. No toeless shoes or sandals. Don't wear a hat. The spaces are not tall so tall folks will have a hard time. Steep stairs. But what a view, wow!
