We had a wonderful time on this trip. The crew went out of their way to find whales. We saw 4 blue whales and a handful of sea lions. The whales were incredible to watch. It was well worth the cost of the trip. The crew was friendly and knowledgeable.
Our trip did go over the two hours so be aware of that when choosing a parking location.

Alex the ships captain and crew were experts and very easy going and friendly, we were lucky enough to see bottlenose dolphins and a blue whale

very nice staff and boat was clean snacks were served captain was very welcoming! we got see dolphins and birds. my whole family enjoyed it!

The staff was great, the boat was perfect & and while we didn’t see any whales, we did see lots of dolphins. BUT our 10:30am cruise had a huge group of middle schoolers on it & they were absolutely out of control. Next time I will call and ask to make sure we’re not on a boat with a field trip. The teachers couldn’t control the kids & they were running wild downstairs. My little kids heard more than their fair share of swear words on what should be a sweet family outing. I totally understand that the company is probably just trying to stay above water with the cost to run these boats, but I think we should have been told about this group and offered another time if desired.

I can't remember their names but may 31st at 9:30am the two ladies were awesome! We seen 3 blue whales. An amazing experience all together.

We took the 12:30 boat. Crews, Kayla and Jill were friendly and very knowledgeable. We saw hundreds of dolphins and cherry on top, 2 blue whales! Mom and a baby. The weather was a little chilly, but was well worthwhile. Boat ride was about 2 hour long.

Note: Tickets are cheaper on other sites like Rush49(cheapest, but the voucher instructions can be hard for impatient people) or Groupon. I paid $8 per person for reservation via Rush49. It’s $13 on location without reservation.
1. You MUST sign in 45 minutes before boarding. You tell them your name or Order ID and they will give you a boarding card to write your name on. They will ask for that card at the pier. There are restrooms by the pier.
2. Balboa Pier parking fee depends on the month but is usually $3.10 per hour, must bring exact change if paying with cash. You pay at the machine, and it gives you a receipt to put on your car’s windshield. Pay for 5 hours to be sure. Parking meters have a 2hr max limit, do not park there. Trip is 2-3hrs total. The walk from Balboa Pier to Davey’s Locker is only 3 minutes and there are restaurants everywhere.
3. Bring a raincoat and thick warm clothing unless it’s mid summer. You will get wet and there is a good chance it’s cold out. Floor is very slippery, boat moves a lot. The diesel engine stinks and can be nauseating. Bring mints or candies, they help with sea sickness. There is food/bar and restroom onboard. Big boat takes 100 people, the small boat takes 45. They rarely use the big one.
4. Trip length depends on the sighting. They will look for dolphins/whales for 3 hours and then go home if they don’t find any. On the way back, they’ll stop by a buoy where sea lions gather. If they find whales or dolphins within in hour, they will let you view them for a total of 20 minutes, and then head back. So the trip can be over as soon as 2 hours. The boat ride to where the dolphins/whales are is around 25 minutes, the ride back is about 35 minutes.
Overall, the trip is okay. Do not drive more than 2 hours for this trip because they can cancel it anytime if they feel like the weather is bad and if there aren’t enough people. It was nice to see dolphins in the wild for the first time. I gave it 3 stars because our first reservation was cancelled while we were there because not enough people were there so we basically wasted gas. No refunds, only reschedule.

I took my 2 granddaughters, 12 & 5. They LOVED the experience. Saw about 200 dolphins altogether, including babies. Saw a sun fish too. Didn’t see any whales though. They were very excited sitting up front & seeing the dolphins up close. Definitely worth the cost. FYI, the initial check in time, is really the start of check in. We had to wander for 45 mins after check in, before standing in line to board. Of course, lots of California surf and fishing souvenirs around the boarding area.

Amazing adventure on the water. Boat was full but not overcrowded. Always enough room for everyone to crowd on one side or the other as we passed dolphins, seals, sea lions and a couple of large fish. Didn’t get to spot a whale but was still fun being on the water with a fun crew.

Decided at the last minute to book a place on Newport Whale Watching. The crew were fantastic and although no whales showed that day, there were plenty of dolphins wanting to say hello, as well as half a dozen or so sealions. Loved the experience and will definitely return next time I'm in California :)

We had sweaters and light jackets in mid-May (albeit it was cooler than usual in the 60's). So I'd say if you have a heavy coat, bring it.

We are a couple visiting the US. We have no gear. I get from the reviews that there are heaps of hidden costs ie fishing licence gear hire fish bucket etc. would some one tell me what other costs I would be up for. I hate it when I budget for a trip and it costs more than I was told.

There is a restaurant about a block or 2 away called Cruisers. If you look Them up on maps and go there first to park it’s $20 for the whole day. Worth it not to worry abt a meter running out or driving around forever and it’s close to everything.
