They need to warn you about the rough ride before you buy tickets - half the boat was throwing up and according to a crew member I asked, this was an average day, it can get even worse. They had a crew member walking around handing out barf bags as part of their job. It's expensive and very basic.

Overall a very good experience on our round trip ride to and from Catalina Island. The check in process was a little confusing upon arrival but once they started getting everyone lined up it was smoother after that. Make sure to tell them if you upgraded to VIP, since they didn’t have it by your name at check in nor did they direct you to the VIP section so we did not get to take advantage of that on the first trip. Due to seasickness we ended up staying on the lower level anyway so not worth it if you think to will experience sea sickness. Due to high winds coming in later that day we had to return 2 hours early for safety but they were very up front about it and said if that wasn’t going to work for your plans they would give a refund and/or reschedule. The crew was all very friendly and accommodating. We had a bumpy ride on the way out there so a lot of the people were experiencing sea sickness but they walked around offering bags and kept the bathrooms clean. We were very lucky to come across some whales and dolphins so the captain let us stop in neutral and go out on the bow to see them which was a fantastic experience. The trip back was right on time and smoother waters thanks to leaving before the weather moved in. I would use this service again but pass on the VIP upgrade. We took advantage of the Groupon pricing which made the experience more affordable.

Was staying in Carlsbad but took the hour drive (to make 730 am trip). Everything with boarding was smooth - would highly recommend the VIP upgrade for preferred boarding and guaranteed indoor seating. Friendly staff - enjoyable and scenic drive. With early trip we were able to park in Balboa Pier lot ($37 for all day parking) but there are restrictions for later departures. Good experience - would recommend

Positives: clean, great staff, good snack bar and bar, excellent sightseeing and staff explanations. Negatives: terrible parking (none) in Newport Beach. Plenty of departure times to fit your schedule. Overall damn good.

The Catalina Flyer is so nice! Super comfortable and smooth ride and accommodating staff. It's quite a luxurious experience at an affordable price. Beautiful boat. We are booking again for a birthday party and are so excited to ride on The Catalina Flyer again soon.

I am extremely disappointed and appalled by my recent experience with the Newport Catalina Flyer. The behavior of some of the staff was blatantly racist and completely unacceptable. From the moment we arrived, we were met with rude and dismissive attitudes that only worsened as the day went on. It's disheartening to see such discrimination in this day and age. I will not be returning and would advise others to think twice before using this service. Management needs to address these serious issues immediately.

Toddlers pay full price and do not get any discount on VIP upgrade.
We still got it but did not think it was worth it. The VIP launge is playing loud bad music which did not help with motion sickness. The fresh air outside was actually much better.

Great experience, we loved Catalina Island ❤️ rent a golf cart and see the whole island, it was so fun. Great little town full of beautiful houses and businesses

The Ferry offers a fun ride to and from Avalon. We found comfortable seats in the Commodore Lounge, and were offered free beverages as part of the package we purchased. Seas were a bit choppy but definitely had a good time. Restrooms are clean and accessible.

It was fine. I should have read the reviews before booking. Didn’t know the smaller boat made that big of a difference. Big boat out for repairs. We had VIP tickets and benefit of boarding first was worth it as many people stood or sat on floor it seemed as it was super rough. But from reviews think the VIP experience was differ than big boat maybe.
Highlight was Diane the volunteer who shared so much info with us and others. Again it was fine and would do again if on the regular boat from reviews. We really wanted out of Newport Beach so this was our only choice.
Also captain slowed down to see whale, dolphin and sea Lion.
Everyone was nice- there was a medical emergency my sons fiancé attended to and a crew member was able to locate first aid kit to help and emt crew was able to board quickly and get him so felt they were good in emergencies-
Again it was fine - and we would book again just not on the Melissa Anne.

What are the car parking options for the Catalina Flyer in Newport? Do you pay for handicapped parking?

What activities did you opt for once you arrived on the island? The tours and rentals seem expensive especially after having paid for parking and the boat ride, so I'm trying to choose carefully. Thanks.

We rented a golf cart from catalinatours 2hr for $100 They gave us a map of points of interest. My teens liked just touring the island, going to the botanical garden, mansion, bell tower and seeing the different homes. We then went to eat $52 bucks but we could have easily packed a picnic and ate on the beach. I saw a lot of teens just swimming and playing on the rocks.

We love sitting outside but it gets cold. So if you do bring a blanket for your legs. If not sit inside by a window. If you get motion sick don't sit facing backwards and step outside for air sometimes.

Depending on the weather, for instance if it's cold or raining, you'll absolutely want to get there as early as you can to get good seating INSIDE.

I recently got discount tickets for the Catalina Flyer on Groupon. We left out of Newport Beach. I've been on Flyer and Express and the Flyer was a smoother ride.

you can park in a lot and pay 18.00 or if you get there early enough you can find street parking for free. I have parked on the street in residential several times without any problems
