I love the cut-over between the valleys with all the curves , tree tunnels and scenic views. But I hate the idea of getting behind some pokey cautious driver that I can get stuck behind that does the route at 15 mph!

The road is an amazing combination of scenic views and tight windy corners. If a steep drop without a guard rail makes you nervous this road is not for you. The road conditions are very variable and there are even a few sections that are washed out forcing both directions of traffic to share the same lane. There are also plenty of cyclists to be found along the way, so be sure to drive at an enjoyable but safe speed Incase you come around the corner and are surprised by a slower road user. The Napa side of the ridge has corners that are a little more open than the Sonoma side. If you’re really enjoying the drive you won’t be able to appreciate the scenery unfortunately.
If you are driving along and a car suddenly appears behind you, please move over and let them pass. They will be gone as quickly as they appeared and you will both soon return to enjoying your drives at your own pace.

I pass by the Oakville road frequently as I live in Sonoma. I went over it to Napa many years ago and today while in Napa we decided to use this road on the way back home. Because of the heavy rains there were washouts, one lane way sometimes and generally poor conditions. I was glad when the trip was over. Is it worth it? For some people yes, for people like me, we consider it a big bore. I can't imagine why people would live off the road high in the hills and what is worse the school districts have to pay for a school bus to pick up offspring on the way to down valley schools. You will see school but stops along the way. Any parent who forces their children to live off the Oakville Grade road ought to be charged with child abuse. In 45 years I traversed this strange passage way. My last time.

This two-lane, no shoulders road is a partially paved or oiled surface with occasional 1 lane sections where the road has washed away. Huge trees, moss, cliffs and valleys. Beautiful scenery. Definitely a change from the mundane highway travel. Not for nervous drivers.

At the suggestion of our B and B owner we took this drive from Sonoma to Napa on a beautiful morning with the top down on our rental convertible. What a fun and challenging drive with great views of wine country. It’s a bit scarier for the passenger as there are some pretty big drop offs with no guardrails. We enjoyed it so much we drove it again....the other way..... a couple of days later later in the afternoon. The sun was low in the sky which made it a bit more challenging. As a warning, I wouldn’t take this drive after dark and beware of the impatient locals behind you. Just find a place to pull over and let them go by.

If you have a car that can handle it (we Turo’d a Porsche 718 Boxster), this might be the most fun you can legally have! Crazy turns, switchbacks, hairpins. Really test your driving skills and the limits of your car. Totally recommended!

We slavishly followed our gps to get from Sonoma and Napa via Trinity Rd and then Oakville Grade. Trinity Rd is both curvy and graded so that your car slants toward huge drops. We were in a rental that did not handle well in abnormal driving conditions. The abject terror was not worth the heavily wooded rural scene at all.
