Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) is built around the famous Farallon's Institute organic garden, first built in the 60's. OAEC is a conference center offering a variety of interesting seminars and gatherings. A must visit West County destination.

This is not a place that you drop by. It's a community (roughly eight families) living together, committed to doing so in a sustainable manner and encouraging others to do the same. I was there for a small, two-day seminar. They have nice basic facilities like a meeting room and the common dining room and some sleeping accomodations (including a few yurts). They do a fair business in meetings, although we were told that we were unusual in that they had no direct role in the meeting itself; I gather that they host a lot of groups interested in seeing how they do things. The setting is very nice. They have seventy acres altogether, ten acres inside a deer fence with all the structures and the other sixty wild (although, as they also noted, they do not simply let those areas alone, given that humans have been affecting them for several thousand years). Meals are buffet, cooked in the communal kitchen, entirely vegetarian. You are asked to remove your shoes whenever you are inside, use compost toilets, use only the biodegradable toiletries provided, and not wear cologne or perfume. Drop-in visitors are discouraged. The people were uniformly friendly and smiling, apparently quite accustomed to strangers staying over. It was little like summer camp for me as a visitor, but it has been around for over twenty years and has clearly been a leader in developing methods for sustainable living.

Glad you enjoyed your stay here and thanks for the thoughtful review. Yes, the general OAEC site is not open to the public for drop in visitors, but our Certified Organic Plant Nursery is open April-October, Fri-Sat-Sun 10am-5pm. We also do public tours of our demonstration gardens every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month (April-Oct) from 1-2:30pm. Beautiful location, filled with deer, exotic birds, and other wildlife. Bring a camera. Places closes at dusk so make sure to come before then. Watch for nice sunsets.

The people who work at OAEC are the kindest, smartest, lovely people. They are activists healing our planet from the local to global. The center has great diversity in plants, native grasses, forest, even a pond that is perfect for swimming!

Whether you go here to attend an educational event, view the gardens, eco tourism, or whatever the event, you will love this place. Their gardens are overflowing with abundance. The staff are harmonious and living together with nature, with a good feel. If you are lucky enough to have meals here, they have extraordinary chefs. Chef Holly is one of my favorites. Recently they released their cook book after years of collaboration. Be sure and ask about it and take a copy with you.

I attended two volunteer Wednesdays at the OAEC. So worth it. The OAEC is a working example of what an intentional community/permaculture garden should look like. Warm, friendly, helpful people, and super tasty vegetarian (mostly vegan) lunch.

This place is not an attraction. It is a community that has found away to combine their resources and passions to create a beautiful of community living. They share their knowledge through OAEC so that anyone who is interested can learn. They do have a nursery that has special hours, volunteer work days and scheduled tours, it you are lucky to be around for one it is inspirational. All of their classes, workshops and programs are top notch.

OAEC is an amazing place in rural Sonoma County, Calif. near Occidental. They raise plants, give tours, have events, and the people working there are so informative and helpful. We were greeted at the entry and given instructions on where to go. We visited on a Sunday at a sale which happen several times a year, and are looking forward to visiting during the fall weekend open houses. We bought a butterfly plant and an abutulon, flowering maple the hummingbirds love. Herbs and vegetables are sold. There were planted areas showing how the plants relate to each other with seating. It is so relaxing. The chicken at the register was so relaxed and laid back. Fascinating place to visit. Occidental nearby is a charming town to have lunch at or the hotels where you can spend a relaxing weekend.
