Visit at Dusk to see the Roosevelt Elk

This was a highlight for my wife and I told her we would end hiking near dusk in hopes of seeing the elk in the meadow and we were not disappointed. In all nearly a dozen elk emerged from the forest to graze in the meadow, some only yards from our car and so close you could see their breath in the cool, damp air. It was an incredible experience and highlight of our trip to Redwoods National Park.

Trailhead for Trillium Falls

The Elk Meadow Day Use/Picnic Area off of Davison Road is a large meadow with lots of parking, picnic tables, and restrooms (probably vault). It’s also the trailhead for the popular Trillium Falls Trail, and it connects to a couple of bike trails as well (Davison Trail and Lost Man Creek Trail). We didn’t see any elk in the meadow here, but did catch them in a couple of other places, particularly in Orick at the Elk Country RV Resort, and also off the side of Highway 101 hanging out next to some rental cabins. If you drive slowly up 101 and check out the usual elk hang outs, you’re bound to see them.

Amazing Elk Sightings

I think I sighted the granddaddy of all elk! His horns were magnificent and I couldn’t take my eyes off him till he disappeared out of sight. There’s a great day use picnic area. It’s just up the hill and there’s a vista looking over Elk Meadow. Very few people there but I thought it was fantastic. Do pay attention to the warning signs.
