This is a great place to visit full of history and planes, lots of planes. There are lots of volunteers who are full of knowledge and are more than willing to talk about the displays. We spent 15 minutes listening to one person talk all about the B-17 bomber that was on display. I am sure if we stayed he would have kept talking. All the planes have panels listing all about the plane, specifications, production numbers and uses. If you read all these displays you could be there for hours. It is an easy place to walk around both inside and outside. You can also try a flight simulator if you want for an extra cost. The also have a lot of history about the second, Vietnam and Korean War.
I highly recommend making a visit to the museum. It would be great for people of all ages.

Excellent displays! Knowledgeable volunteers! Quality gift shop! Years ago I was President of a Waiting Wives Club while my husband served his first tour in Vietnam. The POW/MIA display was moving. We’ll worth our time.

This air museum has a nice collection of airplanes from various time periods/military action. They also had people who could provide more information and offered videos that we found interesting.

I enjoyed the WWII exhibits. A Dauntless dive bomber was awesome. Imagine nosediving 80 degrees and avoiding flak to drop two 500 pound bombs on a ship and returning to an aircraft carrier.

Extremely impressive museum, well worth the $20.00 (Senior) admission fee. While there are certainly numerous well-maintained airplanes on accessible display (and others that are being restored), what made this museum particularly interesting is the great amount of explanatory materials that accompany the airplanes, providing a great deal of historical background. There is even an F-117 Nighthawk on display, which surprised me considering the relative recency of the use of that plane.

We really enjoyed this museum. It is “one of the world’s largest collections of static & flyable aircraft from WWII through the War on Terror.” I certainly gained a lot of respect for the men and women who fought to give us the freedom we enjoy today.
On entering, we met three docents, Richard Lopriore, James Buggelli, and Bob Sylvester. We are from Virginia and now live part time in San Diego. Between them, they had been assigned to the Norfolk Naval Base, and were familiar with Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, so we had plenty to talk about. They told us that three T34 trainer planes would be brought in later that day for a program that coming weekend and it was interesting to see them land and being escorted and parked in the museum.
Jane Barnett was wonderful. We ended up having a private tour of the Pacific WWII hangar with her which was absolutely awesome. Her Dad worked for PanAm as a commercial pilot flying around the various Pacific Islands. He was flying when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. But his wife, Jane’s mom, was on the island and was captured,held prisoner for over 3 years. PanAm, and thus her dad, was xxxabsorbedxxx. By the government.
I wasn’t but so familiar with WWII. I didn’t even realize that the Japanese WANTED the US to enter the war as they though they could easily defeat us. That there were fighter planes, bombing planes, and some that did both. That the submarine’s main objective was to rescue downed pilots - President Bush Sr.was one of those rescued. Jane’s knowledge about WWII brought it all to life.
Mike Stone was also awesome. He gave me a tour of B17. We crawled around and squeezed through as needed. Mike had been a mechanic on these planes and he knew all about them -where each man stood and what his duties were. Where each man would hook up his clothes for climate control. We saw the bomb bay,machine guns, and the small ball turret underneath. He even pointed out where each man would hook up to temperature controls since the plane fought with open ‘ windows’ and temperature could drop well below -30 degrees
There are other hangars, such as one with a stealth fighter and a other devoted to Korea/Vietnam. We were there on a Wednesday but, on weekends, you can fly in some of the planes. You can easily stay 2-3 hours but if you get great docents like ours, plan to stay longer.

What a surprise! Went there to kill some time with my grandkids while my daughter tried to get tickets to the tram. We ended up spending 3 hours there. It's great.

I wanted to like the PS Air Museum and there is plenty to like - a huge collection of planes, including an F117 stealth bomber, a mountain backdrop and friendly docents - but these positives are outweighed by terrible presentation.
The Air Museum is really a military museum, with 99% of the space devoted to America’s Air Force and planes starting in WWII. The collection is focused on 70 planes in three hangars and a dozen outside.
One problem is that this space is jammed with miscellaneous war memorabilia. Why are there model ships, jeeps, gun collections and antique cars in an Air Museum? So much is crammed in that I felt almost claustrophobic in giant hangars.
Another problem is that the Museum is filled with literal walls of written information. Every plane has multiple single-space paragraphs of detailed information. Each war and many individual operations and war stories are described in columns of text six feet high. Much of the information is repeated at different points in the Museum. It’s like reading a book printed on walls. It’s overwhelming, it’s way too much, and the result is that I gave up and stopped reading very quickly.
This would be a great museum if they decluttered it and focused the information presented rather than burying visitors in an avalanche of technical specifications, facts and dates.

If you like vintage aircraft, don't miss this amazing air museum. They must have 6-7 hangers full of aircraft. Plus a line of airplanes and helicopters outside.

You would need to check out the schedule of events at the museum. There was a USO show the day we visited, but not sure there is an 'every Friday night' type of thing.
