Great place to hike. Make sure you have the right gear to trek. Need water hiking sandlas as you will cross over water several times depending how far you go. Going to the end of the trail is about 2 miles. But, you can go much further if you want to. There will be a waterfall at the very end about a 0.5 miles further.
We saw families with young children. They couldn't go far as they had to carry children on their shoulders. There were many spots to sightsee, take pictures, rest & snack.
Because it is an oasis it was not very hot as other areas around Palm Springs. Seniors pay $7 & adults $12 to enter. Well worth it.

We hiked the Murray and Seven Sisters Trail. I'm not sure where one starts and ends, but it was recommended we follow either sign on the trail to the end of the trail, where there are signs that trail is done. Drive into the Andreas/Murray parking area but keep driving to the last parking lots. Since the trail head starts from the last parking area. Otherwise you get to walk a bit more through the parking lots.
There is a trail head sign. Hike starts in the hot desert area but then goes into canyons which are cooler due to rocks and palm trees. Fairly good signage except one area where you scramble up rocks close to the end of the hike. Through many palm trees, some streams. In October the water not not flowing much but visible and made the area cooler. The rock formations are impressive.
We were told by a Tribal Ranger that some people don't stop at the end of the trail and continue over the boulders. And apparently some people do fall and slip on the boulders. Rangers provide talks or lead interpretive hikes on some days, check on their website for details.
There are some nice picnic tables in the parking lot area, many in the shade so it was fun to hike in the morning and return to the car for a picnic lunch in the shade of palm trees. Then we hiked the shorter Andreas loop.

This is a great trail that's relatively easy and offers palms, huge boulders, a clear running stream and great views. It's about 4 miles to end of canyon and back. You do have to cross the stream frequently and that's pretty easy (although a walking stick might help) unless the water is up which means you might get your feet wet. There's a slight elevation gain but generally easy going. As you get near the end of the canyon, there are a few places where you have to scramble that might be a little challenging for some. But generally this is a great "starter hike" if you're new to the area or have inexperienced hikers. If you're ready for a significant challenge, try the South Lykan which is outside the Indian property.

This hike is great. I mostly want to mention that the seven sisters is a bit after the end of the Murray canyon hike however the falls are under whelming. I think personally the best parts of the hike are the shady oasis covered in palm trees. You come across a few of these areas on the hike and they are great. Also note they give you a coupon for tahquitz canyon when you pay your entrance fee. I wish I would have know that since we did that hike first.

We stayed at the ACE hotel and this was an easy walk to the beginning area on West Mesquite. We ended up going up one of the trails and then ended up about a mile or so south of the hotel in the Cahullia Hills Drive area where we snuck through some private drives to reach the main road (Desert Hills Route). The S Lykken Trail would have been a much longer hike. Very happy we did not take that route.

We hiked. It was fun.
There were also people coming with horses as well. We preferred hiking.
Every time we passed an oasis, we had to cross the water. Sometimes it was quite funny.
We cross at least several oasis.
Later we had to climb a mountain and we didn't see the seven sisters.
They were there. We had to go at the left side and we could see the waterfalls.
P.S. We had to come back through the oasis.

Part of the Agua Caliente Indian Canyons, this trail offers a quintessential desert experience. Fairly flat throughout, Murray Canyon is a good hike for all ages as long as everyone is wearing hiking shoes. The peaceful serenity is only broken by the sounds of babbling brooks that hikers must cross over. Most of the shade is found among the palm trees by the rushing streams which is where we stopped for a picnic lunch. Lots of desert wildflowers can be found near the streams as well. There are times the trail hugs tightly against humongous boulders of sedimentary rock and other times where it opens up into fields of grass. There is nothing like trekking across a barren desert landscape and, after a long, satisfying hike, ending up in a lush canyon oasis!

There was no better way to spend a beautiful February day in the Indian Canyons. The start of the trail is easy, but very scenic and photographic. As you begin to climb into the canyon, pay attention to where you place your feet as the trail is uneven, with many rocks and other natural obstacles. We counted 14 crossings of the river/creek. Ultimately as you approach the falls you are scrambling over a narrow rocky trail above a gorge, which if you are a bit squeamish, could be problematic. Ultimately, the beauty, the experience and the photographs are well worth it.

We loved this hike. It includes many stream crossings, huge palm trees, and a waterfall. It was and to find the top of the falls as the trails are not marked. It costs 9 to enter Indian canyon

This is also an equestrian trail and although we saw no horses, the evidence was everywhere. Other trails are humans only and I would recommend staying away from this one.

We will be visiting Palm Springs the last week of September 2016 from Sunday to Thursday. Is Murray Canyon Trail open during that week? Is there any charge to hike the trail?

Yes there is a charge to enter the Indian Canyon Area, which includes Murray Canyon. And according to the Indian Canyon web site the gate is open Friday, Saturday & Sunday from July to September (8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Last Entrance is at 4 p.m.).
