This was a long time ago. Probably the spring of 2000. It was an organized event to see the raptors in their own environment.

We took the grandkids and the dog for a walk. The day was ideal, cool and sunny. Cattle roamed around, big ground squirrels and birds of every kind.
Both grandparents were tired by the halfway point, as it is up and down and we are getting older. The 4 year old needed help so grandpa carried him. The 7 year old proclaimed “I’m dead. Tell my story”. (Where did she get that?)
We made it to the car and drank the water we had left there. Everyone lived. The grandson took a nap.
Take your water even if it’s a cool day. It is a beautiful area, just be prepared.

My wife and I went between two days of rain in February. A easy, peaceful walk. Saw wildlife tracks, wild flowers and very few other hikers. Nice views. Free.

My wife and I have hiked here many times and see something different every time we go. It is an easy hike, we consider it more of a walk than I hike but still pleasant enough to come back.

Great trail for beginners and easy for the kiddos.
Roaming cattle, and after the rains you will see tons of little frogs. Be cautious of snakes during the warm months.

This is an easy trail that meanders along a pasture, up a gradual hill and past a shaded pond. A real relaxing place to be.

I absolutely love coming to the grasslands. We come here for family hikes and I come here to walk my dogs. It's safe and comfortable. I am not scared to do it by myself. There is plenty of nature to see. If you are going during the summer make sure you look out for rattlesnakes!!

Expectations were moderate for this modest hike, however, once we started our trek, it didn't disappointment. It amazed. What makes this location worth the trip is that it is relatively untraveled. Most people fight the crowds for the potato chip rock, and miss out on this scenic, peaceful hike that offers native flowers, swaths of grass, jagged rocks, and loads of wildlife. Come here and get lost in the peaceful tranquility.

We wanted to check out the local terrain around Ramona, California, and settled on this preserve. We drove over in late July only to find two big trucks towing horses in the parking lot. It's an ideal place for those hauling horses and giving them an exercise break. The terrain was simply dry, brown grass with a few scrubby trees and a hiking trail with a shorter and longer loop. We wanted to see more variability so turned around and headed to the Blue Sky Ecological Preserve in Poway, just a short distance from there. Blue Sky is located in a canyon with more going on - it has a very interesting trail with side jaunts. One can go to a lake, walk along a creek, etc. There are placards along the hike explaining the terrain and plant/tree species, etc. You can also wait for a guided tour there. To be fair, the Grassland Preserve is true to its name. It's basically range land. Blue Sky Preserve simply has more things going on. If you're going to hike either preserve in summer, it's best to do so in the morning or afternoon. Wear good shoes.

I went birding with a group of people in the Grassland Preserve. We saw about 44 different species of birds, including a bald eagle and owls nesting in a hole in a tree. The hike was not strenuous, although you do have to watch out for animal poop. There is a parking lot, and outhouse before you enter the grasslands. Be sure to secure the gate after entering because cows will escape, since they graze there. It is a very peaceful preserve with wide open spaces. It is not a place to picnic, you have to remain on the hiking trails and there are no picnic benches. Take binoculars if you want to view the birds that live there. Definitely worth your while.
