I read the reviews on here and I have to say, I dont know what all the fuss about being a terror ride!! This was an excellent mountain road ride with great views, great tunnels, great vintage bridges. We did the section from Alton to Red Bluff. This is a great scenic road. I highly recommend this!

There are several areas on 36W where the Road has been Straightened and this is an Improvement, however some relatively Curvy areas remain, mainly before Child's Meadows and then the last 20 miles or so between Chester and Susanville.
On Sunday, 9/8/19, there was Controlled One LaneTraffic going east between Chester and Susanville, closer to Susanville with a short delay. On Thursday, 9/20/19, there were Two Controlled One Lane Traffic areas coming West between Susanville and Chester, with approxiately 15 minute Delays at Each Segment.
This is a Scenic Drive from Red Bluff to Susanville, with Improvements taking place around Child's Meadows which now include Horse Back Riding.

West of I-5 in Red Bluff, CA-36 is a very long winding path to the pacific coast. Be sure to fill your tank and stomach, it is a very long path to travel and will be the longest 130 miles you will likely ever travel. 36 west is a favorite motorcycle route with those many curves, hairpins and the such. This makes 36W a poor choice for RV's and trailers. A better path to the coast for larger vehicles is available to the North on CA-299 west of Redding. If you are using a motorcycle or a car with appropriate sport suspension, and you have the time, CA-36 west can be a pretty exhilarating way to get to US-101 and the coast.
CA-36 east of Red Bluff is one of the popular ways to get from the north Sacramento valley to Reno, NV via connection with US-395 at Susanville, CA.
Like 36 west, the east portion of CA-36 starts off as a benign trip through north Sacramento valley ranch land.
Where 36 west then winds through the coastal mountain range, 36 east begins a climb into the sierra Nevada foothills before entering the mountain range with curves and near hairpins, not nearly as extreme as those found on the western half. Although 36 east is rarely used by truckers who favor 1-80 further south to travel east-west, 36E between Red Bluff and Susanville is favored by RV's as well as Reno weekenders and general traffic.
Travel time between Red Bluff to US-101 to the west is 4 hours at the speed limit, and 3 hours from Red Bluff to US-395.
The entire run of this California highway is maintained well however, few services if any exist to the west past Platina. More is available to the east in support of travelers and their vehicles with many more towns that will be passed east compared to west.

Recently, Caltrans did some straightening and widening on Highway 36E, going from Red Bluff to Susanville. It was a very ambitious project, and it made a nice difference in the stretch just before Mineral. I have always enjoyed this highway, as it offers a number of sights and terrain features. Now it's even easier to get to Lassen Park and beyond.

This time of year is perfect for a Spring ride. The flowers are blooming, the Mountain is showing it's best and everyone wants to see the Visitor Center!

Lassen Park has been on our bucket list and we are so glad we made the trip. The roads up and back to Red Bluff were well maintained and clean. The park was beautiful, like all the pictures we've seen. Now we have our own snaps of the volcanoes, lakes and snow. So impressed we bought a Sr. lifetime pass.

I rode this from west to east, starting in Fortuna on the coast. It will take you about 4 hours and while being beautiful, it can be hairy. If people driving cars would drive at a speed that allows them to at least appear to stay on their side.....well that would be helpful/hopeful. When you drive a scenic route, be it in a car or on a motorcycle, you're not taking the fastest path, slow down and enjoy the trip....that's why you choose Hwy 36.
It starts off in the Redwoods and the pavement just winds through the giant trees. It has such a thick canopy, that it can be almost dark, even on a bright sunny day. I think the longest straight stretch may have been 50 yards long, this is curvy, twisty and narrow. No one should, although they do, attempt this in a large vehicle (motorhome) or pulling a trailer.....yes they do that too.
Lots of elevation changes, I was up to 4500' several times and then back at 2000'. It's not a technical ride and if you're sane about your riding it is most enjoyable. I finished a 12 hour day by arriving in Red Bluff and I was exhausted.
The downside is too many guys with huge pickups and tiny hands try to make time and I did have a couple of close calls. Keep aware on blind corners, they think they are the only ones on the road.
There are some short distances on top that are gravel. Lots of road construction and the road is actually closed on weekdays except for a window in the afternoon. Read ahead on CalTrans and plan appropriately. Enjoy the ride.

great road to travel west ,maybe cause there are not many other choices,.but beware ,there isn't a straight stetch for more the 100 yards,you will see your self coming and going on the switch backs,,no complaint though ,,its awesome ,,very very beautiful drive

Highway 36 is a two lane road and is best driven when you have time to appreciate the views. This is a great motorcycle road as long as you are attentive. Stay on your own side because there is plenty of windy sections if you like that kind of ride. There is construction goiing on west of Dinsmore so check for updates about full closures this summer. Weekends after 3:00 Friday are open to controlled traffic through Sunday.
