We were looking for a mission and also a place to attend Mass, and this one had several options in 4-5 languages. Check out their webpage for times and languages. the mission and main church are adjacent, so you will find what you need.
Sadly, the mission/church gift shop were closed due to lack of volunteers.

Unfortunately when we went we found out they are only open Friday Saturday and Sunday. So we were able to do much. But there was a lady who was so sweet that help us out and allowed us to get a few items from the gift shop. It was very nice.

I was worried the Mission might be closed due to COVID concerns in California, but I could not tell for sure from on-line comments.
Unfortunately, everything was closed: Parish church, the reconstructed Mission church and the Mission bookstore. Nice lady at the Parish office told us they have no idea when they might reopen to the public.

I have been associated with this institution for well over 40 years. This iconic location is a good representation of classic Catholic lifestyle. My children went to the school. We have been to weddings, sacramental activities, funerals. We have been involved in all the community activities possible. Presently this institution has become largely Hispanic and many of the old world attendees have drifted to other parishes. This is a social issue. This is a genuine fine place

Some folks love to see all the California missions and Mission San Rafael Arcangel is certainly well located, right off the 101 freeway in San Rafael.

This mission is small. It was an assistant mission to start. The Native Americans in San Francisco were getting sick and the cool damp weather in San Fran wasn't promoting healing so they were sent inland
They got well and aboutt 1000 were there. So it became a full fledged mission. The original church was open, but the new church and gift shop were not. I would return with advanced planning.

We parked in front of the Mission and there was a minumum parking fee. We were disappointed that the gift shop was closed and we only had access to the Older Mission. The larger church is only open wen they have mass. We opted to walk the old town area and loved all the shops and local restaurants.

Small free parking lot behind the mission next to the school, lovely small mission (reconstruction) that's free to enter. The gift shop was closed on a Tuesday when we came but you can enter the church from the open side door. Takes about 15 minutes to see it - no exhibits or anything else so Google it to read its history (or buy a little guidebook from one of the other mission store gift shops if you visit to help support them).

Replica of Original California Missions. A working Catholic Church replicating the original Father Serra created mission. Ongoing masses,baptisms and other church functions. A very pretty interior and a small chapel located alongside that sells religious souvenirs. Close to downtown San Rafael Ca if you want to stroll to a local restaurant. Well worth seeing if you enjoy early California history and missions.

This is a beautiful well preserved mission that we really enjoyed touring. It is the oldest building in San Fransisco and the 20th mission built in the state of California. The Mission district park is just down the street and really lovely so for sure do both!
