A wonderful state park for hikers. While the park is right in the backyard of our home city, it was my first time hiking these hills. We went to check out the Old Santa Susana Stage Road. As far as finding the trailhead, I had found a map that positioned the trailhead right around Oakwood Memorial Park. However, don’t go into the cemetery expecting to start your hike. Rather, the trailhead is just one driveway south of the cemetery.
From there, you will quickly come to several forks in the trail for various destinations and varying trail lengths. While the initial markers mention a direction for the Old Santa Susana State Road, the next several markers you encounter will not mention this specific direction. So if you want to get to that part of the trail, you would do yourself a favor to get a sense of the trail direction and turns before heading into the park. While I tried to get our bearings using the AllTrails app during our hike, it wasn’t cooperating. Luckily, some hikers passing us in the opposite direction helped guide us in the correct direction.
We mostly traversed the Mattingly Trail, about 4.4 miles with just over 1,000 feet in elevation gain. This was a really nice trail on which we spent about 2.5 hours, including a stop for our lunch at the highest peak overlooking the Simi Valley.
An interesting area is the portion of the route called the Devil's Slide; back in the day, horses were usually blindfolded and chains were used to supplement braking on the steep decent. Passengers would get off the coach and walk this area. A look over the side of the cliff will give you a sense of the dangers that travelers encountered in the olden days.
On a Friday morning, we encountered no more than four other hiking couples, so it was nice to be in nature without crowds. We saw hawks, a family of quail, and tracks that appeared to be of a large mountain cat variety.
Bring your trekking poles, water, a bite to eat and a camera.

There are no hiking trails established by the State Park system that are marked or identified here. Certain pathways and common use trails exist, and will take the prepared hiker to interesting sites like the stagecoach roadbed and the mosaic sign inlaid into the sandstone there in the 1930's commemorating it.

We went here to hike to the old watering tubs on the historic stagecoach road... Very neat... Limited parking at the trailhead... Nice trail, but it would be better to have a few more signs at major junctions.

My dog and I go hiking about 3-4 times a week. Very relaxing and enjoyable. Clean fresh air. Lots and lots of trails.

This site has continued to expand over the years. It is very presentable now and worth visiting at least once. Its hidden away in a corner of Simi Valley and in a quiet accessible location. This is highly recommended for families with children as a tangible tie to the very recent past of the once farming community. They also have special events going up to Holloween and other occasions.
A wonderful hidden delight of Ventura county, not to be missed.

This expanding state park has hiking paths through mountains and streams and woods.
At the northern end of the park is the site of the Spahn Movie Ranch, where black-and-white western movies and TV shows were filmed from the 1940s to the 1960s.
The infamous 'Manson Family' murderers hung out there in the late '60s.
Bring water and hiking shoes. There are rattlesnakes, but they usually flee from your noise. Just don't run through the weeds! Access the park from the east and south in Simi Valley; there is no northern access.
