This is one of our closest hikes. It's not that long, yet some great sights. The ground is hilly, lots of rocks and native flaura.

The hike is totally worth it but remember to bring plenty of water and some snacks. It has really good views of the lake and is usually busy with other hikers.

This was a nice weekend hike that led to a beautiful view overlooking Lake Berryessa. I would recommend getting there early if you go on a weekend and the weather is nice as I had a hard time finding a parking spot.

I hike the ridge trail a few times per year and find it just challenging enough. It is under five miles from the parking lot and takes me three hours ( I met people who do it in less than half the time.) The first half is uphill. The ridge part is up and down climbing on rocks with views of the Lake on one side and the Valley and Putah Creek on the other. Cell phone service is spotty and there are no bathrooms or water. Go early as it gets hot. This time I did the route counter clockwise for the first time because with all changes (you now go under road 128 through a pipe) and regrowth. There are signs but I got confused and crossed the creek instead of staying to the left on the homestead trail. I think I like the counter clockwise route better as my legs were fresher for climbing on the rocks and coming down there were steps and relatively more shade. The creek is still flowing and there are still some wildflowers.

If you love to hike/explore and you're in the Sacramento area, this is a must see! My cousin and her BF took us on this Sunday hike as part of our cousins hiking club. She said it was a moderate hike and we'd follow it up with some local brews. SOLD!
We arrived and parked in the lot at the bottom of the hill. There's a port-a-potty there, and for being in the woods, it's really clean! We had no problem finding parking, but it was a "chance of rain" Sunday.
Hike starts approaching Homestead/Blue Ridge Trail. You walk through a huge water drainage pipe to get to the trailhead. When the water is too high, you can walk around to the trail head instead, but we opted to go through as it's way more fun. There was a huge fire here in 2015, and the land is still recovering. There's lush greens and wildflowers thanks to 2016's huge winter storms, but there's no longer any shade on the hike, and you see the charred trees all along the way, with new growth happening around them. It looks pretty awesome.
We went the "moderate" route of Homestead Loop and had a delicious packed lunch at the peak, where it becomes Blue Ridge Loop. Since it was still early and we were refreshed from our break, we decided to finish the loop and do the "strenuous" Blue Ridge Loop to return to the parking lot instead of going back the way we had come. I was so glad! It was indeed harder than Homestead because of the rolling hills, but it was so worth it! You walk ON mountain ridges with Lake Berryessa to the left and lush hillsides to the right. It's an amazing view! And going down the rolling hills was way easier than it would have been going up!
There's another Annie's Loop in the back, but we didn't get to it. Overall, the 5 mile loop took us 5 hours (including our breaks and lunch). It was strenuous but not impossible, and we were all so glad we did it!
And on the drive back to Sacramento, you pass by (and should stop at) the local Berryessa Gap Winery/Berryessa Brewing Company for some food truck goodies and a flight of the best local wine. Perfect sunday funday hike!

May is a wildflower month in the Canyon. Blossoms and new growth looking spectacular against the blackened tree trunks from previous year's wildfire. Hike along the moderately strenuous Blue Ridge Canyon trail, take your time enjoy the breath taking scenery.

Definitely wear a backpack and bring plenty of water. There are some good inclines on the ridge loop, overall a nice hike

It is a steep and rocky ridge! 5 mile hike so take enough water and wear your hiking boots. Great views of Lake Berryessa from the ridge. You hike through burned trees the whole way but the green of new growth gives a beautiful hue and the wildfires are blooming. Must have UCDavis permit to hike because it is closed to the public.

The preserve is currently closed for restoration after the big summer fire. These photos were taken on a most informative and enjoyable guided tour by Prof. Phil Ward an Entomologist at UCD.
We are hoping most trails of this spectacular canyon will be restored sometime next spring. They are taking volunteers for help with restoration. We have signed up.

A nature reserve administered by UC Davis for research with natural blue oak woodland and chaparral grassland in a canyon. A beautiful area. In the spring it's full of wildflowers on the main 5-mile moderately difficult loop trails with splendid vistas of the Lake Berryessa. Beware of the three-leafed poison oaks everywhere, but look closer for shooting stars, yellow mule-ears, blue dicks, etc. You won't miss the prominent blooming redbud bushes.
The dirt-lot parking is on the right as soon as you crossed Putah Creek on CA-128 from Winters just before a blind hair pin turn. Be extremely careful, we witnessed a car came flying through the blind turn hitting a car going into the parking lot. There is no turning lane. The lot fills up fast so go early around 8 am. Be prepare with water, snacks, good hiking shoes and sun protection. It gets hot out on the open ridge.
You will feel rejuvenated after the good workout with vistas, flowers, turkey vultures as companies along the way.
