My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful 17 day trip to Cairns, the Cairns outback and Cooktown in June and July 2022. Incorporated in the trip was an interesting Cairns outback tour that included overnights in Georgetown, Karumba, Forsayth and Mount Surprise.
Our stay in Georgetown (376 kilometres south west of Cairns) included a visit to the Georgetown TerrEstrial Centre incorporating the amazing Ted Elliott Mineral Collection.
If you intend calling into Georgetown in your travels you must view this Rock and Mineral Collection and not just make Georgetown a sleep stop. It is well worth the admission money and you don’t need to be a rock mineral buff or rock hound to enjoy the spectacular specimens on offer. You will be dazzled, amazed and excited by what you will see. A Collection as good as this can be compared with a zoo displaying exotic animals or a botanic gardens displaying a wonderful display of colourful plants and flowers. This is the mineral equivalent of zoos and botanic gardens that we all crave to see on our travels so we should not overlook the minerals. The beauty and wonders of this world are not just confined to its animals and plants.
Ted Elliott OAM started collecting minerals when he first encountered specimens as a young lad in 1946 on his father's farm at Wirrimah, near Young, NSW. This started a life long rock hound passion and the result – one of the largest collections of minerals from Australia and all over the world and permanently on display here in Georgetown, Queensland for current and future generations to enjoy. That’s the great thing about small Queensland outback towns – there is always some interesting and unique tourist attraction that has been established in these places to make the visit there all the more worthwhile.
The collection of gems, minerals and crystals is very extensive with 4,500 specimens contained in nine themed rooms with many displayed in very well constructed and easy to view glass display cases. The specimens come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colour. There were so many different rocks and minerals on display from all over Australia and from many other countries around the world. There was an amazing display of agates including the Big Agate, one of the largest agates cut and polished from Agate Creek (about 100 kilometres south of Georgetown) in the 1950s. Also on display were great examples of opalised wood, quartz crystals, stunning purple Amethysts, Rose Quartz, beautiful green cut and polished Chrysopriase and numerous calcites to name just a few of the many types of rocks and minerals on display. Some of the purple Amethysts on display simply “blew me away”.
An important exhibit in the Collection is the Providence Nugget – a fine example of crystallised gold found in July 2002 at Flat Creek Station, Georgetown and weighing 858 grams. There was also a fine collection of Argyle Diamonds from Western Australia on display.
Also included in the TerrEstrial Centre is the newly opened UnEarth Etheridge Exhibit which is a tribute to the women and men who settled this region (Georgetown is the principal town in the Etheridge Shire). There are some very good large eye catching posters depicting among other things the early copper mining in the area, cattle pastoral stations and the sheep and wool industry. There are also a few interesting interactive displays involving push button selections.
Worth noting is the elaborate “TerrEstrial” sign in the foyer of the Centre leading to the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection - two metre long and composed by local lead light artist Terry Smith, using 287 individual agate cabishons sorted by colour, from the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection and found at Agate Creek.
Because we were part of a tour group and on a specific timeframe we only had about 40 minutes to see what we could. We could easily have spent more time here.
Nevertheless we really enjoyed this visit to the TerrEstrial Centre and it made coming to Georgetown all the more worthwhile. The Ted Elliott Mineral Collection is indeed world class and one would be flat out finding a better collection anywhere on this earth. What a privilege then to be able to see it first hand.

Spent almost 2 hrs exploring the gem collection and museum, well worth the visit.
Highlight is the thunder eggs. I have been to Tamborine thunderbird park but these are better then that.

This impressive collection is housed in the modern and imposing Georgetown Terrestrial Visitor with glass cases and small cards indicating what kind of stone/mineral you are looking at. I think it cost $10.00 to view but I can honestly say that the collection in the Miles Settler's Village was vastly more comprehensive and better displayed. However the one at Georgetown gave a good insight in to the mineral wealth and the dazzling array of precious and semi-precious stones to be found in this region. In the rest of the Centre you can buy souvenirs, flamboyant shirts and use the (free) internet.

Interesting way to spend an hour or two in Georgetown, QLD. See the history of the local area through the many hundred gemstone exhibits and mining memorabilia. Get a feel for the wealth of the area back in the day.

This huge collection is well displayed and organised. It is supposed to be one of the largest and most comprehensive mineral collections in the world. It is certainly spectacular and certainly worth a visit. it is housed in a fairly new building, probably purpose built. An asset to tourism attractions for Georgetown

We popped into the Georgetown Visitor Information Centre (which houses the Ted Elliott Collection) on our way out to Cobbald Gorge.
The collection is very impressive - There are a few items outside you can view free of charge which we did (including a very cool 253 kilogram Quartz crystal) but for the main collection you pay an $8 entry fee. If you have time, this would be well worth a look (we did not have time unfortunately).
Also, be sure to check out the map of the Savannah Way just outside the Centre including detailed information on Georgetown & its history. And I recommend getting a photo on the giant Georgetown letters after you cross the Etheridge River bridge heading into town.

The Ted Elliot Mineral Collection is housed in a council building in town and is surprisingly good. It is well curated, thematically organized and full of interesting information and we spent nearly two hours there. My wife has a real interest in rocks and minerals and found it fascinating. It is the second largest mineral collection on display in Australia. A really pleasant surprise!

We would have liked to visit this exhibition but it was closed on Sunday. While we realise that staffing may be an issue, tourists do not keep Monday to Friday business hours. Authorities promoting outback tourism need to address appropriate opening times of attractions for tourists.
