I'm sorry to hear that some people had bad experiences with this outfitter. I have hunted with Russ twice in 2013 and 2014. I found Russ to be a fantastic guide. He works hard and puts you on animals. I got a great 6x6 in 2013 but I missed in 2014...my fault. Russ hunts hard and you'd better be in good shape. I think Russ does a great job though and I highly recommend him.

These guys might be ok for trail riding excursions, however, don't even think about booking them for guided hunting services. Lodging, food, transports, etc.. all below standard. I don't need much and this trip was well below my minimum satisfaction. No hunting in early morning or late evening. No ice in camp (base camp). Walked 54 miles, saw 1 cow yet refused to change spot and stalk strategy. We weren't welcome in camp from Day1 for some reason. 4 hunters from different states- terrible company. Don't even think about booking with SLO.

Took the family on a three day, two night horseback pack trip into the Zirkle Wilderness north of Steamboat Springs, CO, in August 2016. The horses were great (incredibly fit, moved along at a fast pace through the roughest of territory, but safe and obedient) and Russ (company owner) and Clay (head wrangler on our trip) were very friendly and made sure that we had a good time. We rode in for about 4 -5 hours to a previously established base camp, with large tent, cots & mattresses, and then went on day rides and fishing from there. While I would not classify the base camp as luxurious (the company's focus is on hunters interested in getting into and around the backcountry, with the basecamp as a place to eat and sleep when not hunting) it was comfortable enough after a long day in the saddle, and the food was plentiful.
If you love horseback riding and the wilderness, this is a great way to enjoy the two together!
