What a great place. The flowers on the outside were great. The museum on the inside was terrific. The hike up to the ruins on the hill above the center was concrete. The ruins on top were very interesting and the view was special.

Operated by the Bureau of Land Management. Adults $3 from March-October; free November-February. Seventeen & under free. School groups free. They also honor Federal Recreational Lands Passes.

The Anasazi Heritage Visitor Center and Museum is a federal research center, curation facility, and museum with approximately three million records, samples, and artifacts from public lands throughout southwestern Colorado. One of the most thorough and well-organized museum as it relates to Ancestral Pueblo People of the four-corner area of the USA.

Very knowledgeable and welcoming staff. Amazing displays. Need at least 3-4 hours to see it all. Included are hands-on displays, videos, and a full scale pit house with all the accessories that would’ve normally been found in one of them, an excellent representation of ancestral life. I particularly liked the photo of the oldest coiled basket ever found in Utah, at 9,000 years old! A really rare find. Also, how they eventually replaced the weaving of dog hair with cotton.

Above and behind the center is a short trail to the Escalante Pueblo ruins which also offers a view of the McPhee Reservoir on the Dolores River. Along the way are several signs talking about the flora, Spanish explorers, and the beautiful high mountain peaks that you see all around.

Definitely worth a stop – especially if you want to understand even better archeological sites such as Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, etc.

This is a beautiful museum built to house artifacts from the construction of the reservoir to the north and west. I have been to the Heard Museum in Phoenix numerous times. Although much smaller, this museum compares favorably in the quality of its displays. It is an educational museum with much to learn. I highly recommend the film. They will tell you it is six minutes long, but it is longer and worth every second. Highly recommended!

Even though the center itself was closed (CO VID restrictions), maps were available to use for planning our explorations of the pueblos in the area. Maps had route marked from the center to the Lowry Pueblos then to Hovenweep Monument and back over to Sand Canyon Pueblos... a great itinerary. Facilities and the surrounding landscape/trails impeccably maintained. A very nice 1/2 mile+ paved trail (with benches for stopping/resting) by the center leads up to two sites, the Escalante and Dominguez pueblos. Another turnoff at the top overlooks the McPhee Lake Reservoir. Wonderfully panoramic scenic views. Well worth the walk to the top!

Due to COVID, the Visitor Center is closed. I appreciate the sensitivity and COVID awareness of the BLM in closing the Center. We've been there before and hope to come back when it's open. It is an amazing Center. Bravo BLM. Out front there is a rack with information. A Ranger was stationed at the parking lot discussing the features in the area and providing suggestions. It was nice to have someone providing ideas. Also, Escalante Pueblo Ruins are a short 1/2 mile walk up the hill.

I have a degree in Anthropology and a focused interest in the ancient cultures of the Southwestern Native Americans. This museum tells it all. If you're going to Mesa Verde, then you might as well go here to. BTW, the staff is excellent!

This place was amazing. The museum was fascinating and wide-ranging. It had many interactive exhibits which were great for kids and adults. We could touch objects and actually grind corn. You got a feel for how the ancient people lived.

The museum is interesting in it's own right but we found the best part was getting some helpful information from the staff and docents about which sites to visit at Canyon of the Ancients. This is a huge park and the various sites are spread out and somewhat remote. We spent a good 15-20 minutes with one of the staff going over the map of the park and getting some tips about the different sites.

That made the visit worthwhile as several of the locations required travel down improved dirt roads / county roads well off the beaten path. My thanks to the staff for the additional information and itinerary.

If you use a National Parks Passport book and collect the stamps and stickers, Canyon of the Ancients, for whatever reason, doesn't have its own stamp. The gift shop staff had some third party stamps which we settled on instead.

The museum has a fine collection of Native American arts and crafts and the hiking trails immediately around the center are well maintained. If you visit during the summer months, be prepared for warm to hot weather. Bring along water or Gatorade.

A very nice museum . Thoroughly enjoyed the history and you dont want to miss the videos. The displays were awesome. Will take National Park Pass but very cheap anyway. Don't miss this gem.

This is one of the best museums for Native American History that I’ve seen. It is limited in scope to the tribal peoples in the Four Corners region, but the number of artifacts, informational displays, and interactive tools was fantastic considering it costs $3 per adult. It’s free if you have a National Park Pass. One minor complaint would be that the center is located quite a ways from the actual National Monument, which is a bit odd.
