My sister and I are avid (Norwegian) fisherwomen but we'd never been ice fishing before. So, during a recent winter vacation in Steamboat, we decided to give ice fishing a try. After much online research, we concluded that Steamboat Great Outdoors was the guide for us and booked a full-day trip.
Kent is the owner of SGOIF and is a super nice guy! Our day started with Kent picking us up at our place where he then drove us to the local Fish and Game office so we could purchase our day license. From there, we drove Stagecoach Lake - a pretty little lake just outside town. We walked a short distance from the parking lot over the frozen lake to our fishing spot. Kent had all of our gear packed nicely into a little toboggan - folding chairs, gas-powered auger, camping stove, cooler, fishing gear - everything we would need for a day on the ice.
The first matter of business was drilling several holes into the thick ice. We assisted Kent in this process which was an experience in and of itself! Once we had our holes drilled, he set us up with two poles each and a folding chair. The results were immediate with many strikes. We ended up catching over a dozen beautiful rainbow trout. Our largest was a beautiful 3.2 pound, 22-inch gal which we released! We kept 5 of the others for dinner which Kent happily cleaned and kept on ice for us.
Around lunchtime, Kent took out his little camp stove and heated up a wonderful homemake Elk Stew that he'd made earlier. Another first for us!
We wrapped up the day around 5:00 as the sun was beginning to set on the lake. Even as we were trying to pack up, the fish continued to bite. It was amazing!
After packing up our gear, we headed back into town. At this point, we'd become quite fond of Kent and so we invited him to join us for Happy Hour at One Steamboat Place to celebrate our victorious day of Ice Fishing! You can't go wrong booking a trip with Kent and Steamboat Great Outdoors Ice Fishing. My sister and I will definitely be back again next season for Round Two! Cheers!

During our ski trip, we wanted to experience some of the landscape around Steamboat and get a "fishing fix" at the same time, so we booked this ice fishing trip through the concierge.
These guys operate a neat little business in the winter, taking people out onto Stagecoach Lake (its a short walk across the ice), drilling holes and then fishing for trout.
The guys could not have been more welcoming and informative. They collected us from the resort and drove us to the Parks Office for our Day Fishing Licence (remember to take some ID with you!!). After that it was a short drive out to Stagecoach Lake which is open for boating and fishing in the summer months. There are all these timber pontoons sticking out where boats are moored in the summer months, all frozen over.
Scenery around there is BEAUTIFUL and its really quiet. There are some houses tucked into the hillsides, but its pretty natural out there and if you're lucky, you may see a bit of wildlife on the drive out.
The fishing itself is very relaxed and EASY. You can sit in a camping chair or stand or leave your rod propped up, but you are more than likely to catch a fish. We had a below average day but managed to catch 6 trout and missed quite a few more. They cleaned them for us and gave us our freshly caught, wild trout fillets in a ziplock bag to take home. Salt, pepper and a slice of lemon, wrapped in foil in the oven for 20? mins - amazing! A great way to top off the day.
They provided lunch which was a choice of sandwiches from a nearby cafe ( the best pulled pork Ive ever eaten) and we sat on the pontoons, in the Colorado sunshine looking across the lake, talking about life and what a great spot this was! On that day, we only had one other couple with us, but it wouldnt matter how many you were, the lake is huge.
Its a TOP travel experience - I really recommend it. Dress up warm, as if you're going skiing, thermals etc and you'll need a hat and sunnies cuz the wind can get up there Im sure!
Choose your trip for a sunny day - and try it!!

Great to know! Since you sold me on the Steamboat Great Outdoors ice fishing trip, I was wondering where you guys stayed? I am looking for a place closeby before I meet up with family members in a condo later.

Hi Geri,
We stayed at "One Steamboat Place" at the base of the mountain. Fabulous accommodations with a wonderful staff at the base of the mountain (ski-in/out)!
