It's a hard hike best started before dawn, even in October. We try to be at the first lake right around sunrise and it makes for great photos. The drive to the lakes, too, offers some great photos opps.

This is a very long, steep and strenuous hike through the trees. The beautiful surrounding peaks are NOT visible during the hike up to the lake. All that effort for an overused trampled area with a serious human waste and toilet paper problem is not worth it. There are lots of other hikes in the San Juan Mountains that are nicer but don't expect solitude. You'll be hiking with MANY other people.

What a gorgeous hike - pretty intense elevation but worth it! The parking lot is pretty small so get there early.

Beautiful trail that leads to 3 alpine lakes - it is about 3.6 miles from the trail-head and relentlessly uphill for at least the first 2 miles or so. It is not a trail for beginners or those who are not in decent shape but not super-difficult either. The lower lake is stunning - it is the largest and deepest of the 3 and has an amazing deep blue color. It is worth hiking up to the middle lake for the views of the lower lake down below, however be aware the trail is quite steep and rocky in places but not very long. Once you reach the middle lake the trail to the upper lake is much easier. It is over 9 miles round trip if you hike all the way to the upper lake. The road to the trail-head is gravel and can get rough in spots, especially once you pass the boundary to the National Forest - probably best to have an all-wheel drive vehicle with higher clearance but there were a few passenger cars up there - might be kind of tough on the suspension though.

As a seasoned Colorado hiker, I completely understand why this is one of the most popular hikes in Telluride - it's jaw-droppingly beautiful, from the first step to the last. It's also a bit of a burner, so be ready to fire up those glutes. Do yourself a favor and go early, even on weekdays. We had an early start and a wonderful experience, but things were a total zoo when we got back to our car.

A very popular hike, for good reason. 9 miles gravel road to trailhead, in a small car took almost an hour, but can be done. Plenty of spaces a trailhead despite popularity. 3 miles almost straight up, but doable. Take time to explore entire perimeter of lower lake, including large boulder at end of lake. Half mile hike to upper lake is straight up, which is doable if you take your time. Gives a great view of the surrounding mountains and the color if the lake looks even better. A bonus, if time allows, is a side hike to the water fall flume off to the side if the trail up or down. Seems tiny from trail but more powerful up close and helps make this hike all the better.

This is one of the most beautiful trails I have been on. It was a six hour hike because we parked at the trailhead for Bridal Veil Falls. It's very rocky and had to cross over some water, my hiking shoes were fine. It was fairly difficult, but I live in Florida where its flat. The views are breathtaking and the mountain wild flowers are in bloom. There are plenty of waterfalls along the way. The lake is just stunning but there are quite a few bugs around the lake. There is also a canoe available to use if you wish. So glad I did this trail.

Can't believe this place is real! It is a challenging hike but worth it. The water really is SO blue.

So, a friend of mine went there, I thought her pictures looked amazing and I have to go and the hike was on my way so I figured I'll spend a day there. I'm not a hiker, I went there by myself, and I don't enjoy hiking. I love the views you get and I love taking pictures. For that I came, not for the hike.
The drive to the start of the trail is a gravel road, 13mi and with a bad car, it took me 45min. This will be easier if you have more clearance and a 4x4 and not a car that already falls apart so keep that in mind when you go there. I was told the beginning is a bit rough and yes, I would clearly say that this is not an easy hike and more on the advance side. It's not just you walk there and you're there, this is a serious hike! Once you hit the first lake, the views are just amazing! There's another one, the middle one, and a third one, the upper one. I decided to go see all and again, the part to the middle one is very rough. It's a serious hike once more. The middle one is not as beautiful as the first one, it's just a lake with fish but it's above the treeline (-> windy!). I had lunch there because there were barely people and it was just quiet and nice and I really enjoyed it. Again, it's not super beautiful but I really like it. Then, to the last one, it's a comparably easy way to get there but again the lower one is the most beautiful place. If I was gonna go again, I'd go see the lower one and then climb a little towards the middle one because that way, you get to see the lower one from above and that is a view that is SO worth it! Note the total hike is about 8mi round trip and 2500ft up and obviously down again as well.

First let me start by saying, this hike is somewhat of a challenge, but it’s worth the effort! We hiked all the way up to the 3rd lake and every one was just as breathtaking as the other. Such an amazing reward! This is one you don’t want to miss. The first half of the trail is where you gain most of the elevation. There is some climbing involved as well. We would do it again, for sure!

Is it possible to do a small portion of this hike with kids (4 and 10)? Or do you have to pretty much do the whole thing to get the full effect?
My husband and I are traveling to this area with our 1 year old next month (mid September), and we’re wondering if the Blue Lake Trail hike was doable with a toddler strapped to your back. Has anyone out there done something similar or seen other families do it?

If you’re really fit, I’d say yes. It isn’t dangerous, but it is a relentless climb (and I’m a seasoned biker who lives at higher elevation). We met some folks who didn’t have kids or heavy packs ready to quit during the final stretch.

I know the road to the falls. What vehicle did you take up that road to the Blue Lakes Trail head start - above the falls. I always hiked all the way from the bottom, never drove the road to the trail head but want to this time to save time. I have a Subaru forester think I can drive it up there? Thanks Jutta Scarry

I took a 4-wheel drive Lexus RX350. It was a piece of cake. There were only a few sections that required some careful steering.

Is this drive doable in a Honda minivan? Pretty low riding. Also, is this a good hike for kids? Our youngest is 6, but none of us are really experienced hikers. Lowlanders from the plans here!

I did this hike last summer but went with a bigger car and don’t really remember how treacherous the road from ridgway up to the trailhead is...I am going with a Mazda 3 this time which is a very small and low to the ground car...will I make it up to the trailhead no problem or should I rent an SUV? Going in early June. Thanks for any info in advance!

For backpacking/overnight camping at the lower lake, do people use bear boxes or the bear bags in trees to keep food safe overnight?
Is there camping under trees again once one hikes all the way to Yankee Boy Basin?

I had plans on going here June 9th, will it still be too cold and covered in snow? What is an alternative that is within an hour or two of there for beautiful hikes not in the snow?
