I was amazed to learn of the massacre of women and children during the time coal miners were attempting to unionize. Sad, but a real part of history. I pray this will never be torn down.

We knew about Ludlow and thought that we should pay our respects. Definitely worth the drive down from Colorado Springs, where we were staying.
Even though we knew the history it was interesting to see the terrain and visualize the tent city and the events of April 1914.
I wish we could give the UMW $$$ to spruce up the area around the monument, but at the same time there is something moving about the love and care the UMW took to commemorate this event and honor the dead.

I'm a history buff, so any History is important to me. I drove by this site almost monthly for the years, but did my research on the internet, piquing my interest further.
After stopping this time, I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure what the large building is, and the gate around the monument was open, but I didn't go in because I want sure I was allowed. There is a lot of interesting reading and it tells a very important history here. With a visit.

It was nice to see American history precisely explained. As a historian, I like to see events interpreted before and after the fact. Yes, it needs some love, but if you take the scenic tour, you get a sense of what those miners did on a daily basis. The coal tailings tell a remarkable story. Enjoy what is left of the mining area before it all goes away.

Very interesting, lots to read. The place needs to be kept up is all. I do recommend seeing this monument. It's right off I-25. Just takes a few minutes to see.

There is not really much to see, but the history there is very interesting. The strike, the parties involved, and the deaths that resulted probably changed history for labor.

We were racing down the highway when a sign popped up for the monument. My daughter recalled this was a miners massacre that she learned about in college so we jumped off the highway to take a look. Coming from a long line of UMWA miners, this seems interesting. Once we got of the highway, the sign directing us further was barely readable. A few miles further we came upon the monument.
The story of what happened is nicely laid out in several plaques and it is certainly a sad story and one that should not be forgotten. I was happy to read that once a year, there is a ceremony to remember the event.

A must see for anyone interested in the history of the labor movement and American social history. Unsurprisingly this event and its memorial are tragically largely unknown, so if you've made it far enough in learning about it that you're reading my random review, you must go if you're anywhere in the area, and give them some money to keep maintaining this important reminder of the price of progress.

Today, when the rights of workers have been nearly eradicated, stopping at this memorial will bring into focus the sacrifices of working men and women to gain fair wages, fundamental safety working conditions, and the right to organize. If traveling through southern Colorado this is an important stop for the education of young about what it means to be an American!

What are the roads like after turning off the main highway? Also, about how many car spots are there for parking?

The roads are paved and in good shape. The site is unattended but there are signs explaining what you're looking at and a metal container where you can leave donations if you chose to. Not a long stop but we really were glad we went.
