I have long heard to this museum and finally resolved to visit and glad I did. This is a comprehensive collection of British art , beautifully displayed. The building itself is a treasure by Louis Kahn

From the outside, the building looks like a generic retail outlet. The inside, however, is a marvel of design and layout. The collection is rather static, but appealing. I especially appreciated the manner in which the "long gallery" clustered the artwork. This is not a very large museum, so it is easily visited if time is limited. I highly recommend it. Sorry I'll miss the Henri .Moore exhibit, which opened shortly after my visit. It should be exceptional.

Small but very comprehensive, with an excellent collection from classic to modern. The Steve McQueen lynching tree was very thoughtfully presented.

There are some real gems of British art here; the descriptions could be more informative. Electronic guides would have been super helpful. Our favorites were The history paintings by Marc Quinn, on view until October 16, 2022, especially Emma Gonzalez speaks at a rally for gun control. Staff were uniformly friendly and helpful.

We loved the Bridget Riley exhibit. We caught up to a guided tour and learned a lot about the artist. This is modern art. They also had some very old paintings. FREE admission

The Yale Center for British Art has an outstanding collection of British art covering the years ~1550 - present plus several special exhibits. The galleries are arranged in mostly chronological order, with the (mostly) paintings reflecting various British and world events affecting society. The museum building is also outstanding, with several multi-story galleries suitable for displaying the more grandiose painting intended for some castle's main hall.
The current special exhibits covered the role of female British artists in several periods. The museum is located on Yale's campus; just a few steps for the main New Haven Green. Definitely worth a visit if in the New Haven area.

I've been meaning for four years to write about our visit of May 2017 - ignore the date "May 2021" shown here - but remain impelled even now to do so, as will be seen shortly. It might be that what gave rise to my cavil has since been modified.
This collection is almost certainly the largest and finest gathering of British art outside the UK. Quality is high, and pieces are well displayed and in good condition. We particularly liked the chronological layout, with individual rooms devoted to art of a certain period. And it's a good idea to display placards giving some background to each period ... at least, it would be. For, the placards contain basic factual errors - the year of the immediately post-WWII General Election, for example, and the political position of the man who was the main driver behind introduction of the pre-WWI welfare reforms - which, while none of them matters greatly on their own, give no grounds for confidence that the writer knows their stuff sufficently to provide knowledgeable and objective summaries. Unfortunately these fears are borne out. Too often, interpretation veers into unjustifiable prejudice which has been taken in hook, line and sinker by some visitors giving reviews below.
Here's just one: a comment to the effect that C18 British high society was "xenophobic". Really? In living memory Britain had had a Dutch king and then enjoyed a succession of German kings and their queens, Germans all. British aristocrats went on their Grand Tour and brought back not only Continental, chiefly Italian, artifacts, but plans to re-build their stately homes in the style of Palladio, interiors modelled by Italian stuccadori. Following long established practice starting with Holbein and continuing in C17 with Rubens, Lely and Artemisia Gentileschi amongst others, several foreign artists worked in C18 Britain - Kneller, Nollekens, Roubiliac, Angelica Kaufmann - some of them settling permanently in the country; for portraits, Batoni was frequently preferred to native British portraitists. And in music, who was the supreme composer in C18 Britain? Georg Friederich Händel, and his most serious rival for British affections was Buononcini.
No, the notion is absurd and unworthy of a serious academic institution, and there were several other such 'interpretative' judgments. What is even more disappointing about them is that someone in the organisation has no love for the nation that produced the art of which this institution holds such an important collection.

We managed in about 3 hours to see almost all of the collection which contains so many great British artists of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially portraits and landscapes. All beautifully displayed in an understated but appealing building.

Just completed the docent tour of Victorian Radicals: From the Pre-Raphaelites to the Arts and Crafts Movement which runs until May 10, 2020. This was the first time some of these paintings and other works have ever been shown outside of the UK, and well worth the visit! Open any book from the Pre-Raphaelite period and you will see these works. Our docent “Boots” was terrific too. She really brought the time period to life. She shared so many of the political, cultural and social details, none of us wanted the tour to end.
