We spent a wonderful afternoon with Captain John and his crew taking the ferry to Sheffield Island and also took the Lighthouse tour. It was a wonderful way to spend time with friends and have a fun experience and learn some history and more too.

Went on a group trip and it was very interesting, beautiful, and friendly.
You have to bring your own snacks but people shared with all the passengers and not crowded. Want to go again to learn more about the coast and islands.Saw a dolphin and jumping fish.

My wife, daughter, and I took the Sheffield Island Lighthouse Ferry on a Sunday afternoon. I enjoyed the narrated boat ride to and from the island, learning about some of the sites along the way. Once on the island, we wandered around a little while on our own. The nature trail was closed. We looked through the lighthouse, for the 2 stories we could access. Later there was a very informative, narrated tour of the lower part of the lighthouse. Afterwards, we sat on Adironack chairs to watch the sea until it was time to catch the next ferry back to Norwalk. There was perhaps too much leisure time on the island. There is a small concession stand that sells snacks and some souvenirs.

The boat trip out was wonderful, and the narration was well done. The island itself was nice but we abandoned the nature trail because, despite the free bug spray, there were way too many mosquitoes attacking us.
Still, lots of fun overall!

A really nice way to spend a few hours. The ferry ride over is great with lots of info on the way. We brought our lunch and ate at the picnic tables with a beautiful view of the sound and Lighthouse. The staff was great and knowledgeable.

A really nice day trip from hot and humid NYC! We decided last minute to drive to Norwalk, CT. A friend had suggested it since we did not have any major summer trips planned.
What a nice surprise. The big attraction for us was going to the Sheffield Island lighthouse. I booked tickets via the website. Really easy. We took the 12:30 ferry. The drive from Queens was under 1 hr. I was afraid we would be late so I called ahead and they were nice enough to tell me we could take a later ferry if we wanted to. Luckily we got there just in time for boarding. There is a parking lot right n front. Not a free lot but super convenient!
There were ample seating and everything was clean and well cared for. Captain steered us safely through the river to get to the island. On board was also Danny who gave an informational talk regarding the oysters, different houses,structures and buildings we were passing by as well as pointing out the different islands that make up the chain. He talked about the history of the islands as well as what’s going on nowadays.
We had about under 2 hrs on the island so we could explore and hike at a leisurely pace. Only bummer was the forest walks were closed due to a recent storm and the paths may have tree debris. The shore path was clean and breezy.
On the way back, Danny recommended some restaurants in Norwalk for oysters and dinner.
I would definitely recommend the ferry going to Sheffield Island as a day trip from NYC!

We had a lovely day on the ferry and visiting the lighthouse - everyone from the captain (frank) to the young guy giving us the tour was incredible! Once on the island, we had a fantastic tour of the lighthouse and walked around exploring the island. All in all a great day!

The ferry ride over was interesting. Dan was a wealth of history of the islands we passed on our way to Sheffield Island. The tour of the lighthouse was interesting and it's alway exciting to see how people lived in the past. The only negative was the insects. Some people got eaten alive

The boat ride to Sheffield island and lighthouse tour were fun and informative. Sheffield is a beautiful place to take photos. The staff is friendly and helpful. I enjoyed hearing stories about the lighthouse.

A lovely boat trip to Sheffield Island Lighthouse. Had a guided tour around the lighthouse, went for a stroll along the beach and watched a mother osprey and her two babies. One tip to mention: bring insect spray and apply before getting off the boat as the mosquitoes are waiting for you. There is also spray provided on the island. Great trip and lovely crew.

How early should we arrive before boarding? We have a 3 PM departure. Also is there free parking anywhere?

Parking was not a problem for us. There is a lot right in front and you can estimate how long you will need. Just for the island or will you be moseying around after you land.
We ran a little late so we called them from the car and they waited for us. Always better a little earlier is best. Ferry is not that large and you want to be able to either get a seat in the shade or not.
