We wanted to visit since the website says it is open on Sundays, but the gate is locked and there is a sign indicating the facility doesn't open until May 2022.

It was only fitting I took the train to So Norwalk train station to visit SoNo Switch Tower Museum. about a 10 minute walk. Free to visit but gave a donation! 3 floors to explore. Staff on each floor explain the in and outs how the switch tower works. While there commuter trains past by. Staff was very friendly and helpful. only open on weekends.

The SoNo Switch Tower Museum is a great example of early 20th Century railroad technology preserved in working order. The three-level tour has the main switch room in the upper floor (with a great view of the adjacent railroad junction); laid out as it was when in use. You get to try out throwing the switches (hooked up to display tracks, not the actual railroad), so you can see the level of effort needed to align a train's route (and learn why these were called "Armstrong" switches).
The other floor show more the mechanical "computer" controls used ~100 years ago to make the train rides safe; you get a sense of what electronic computers would eventually replace. There's also a New Haven-themed gift shop. A must visit for anyone interested in railroad technology or history.

It was very cool to see the switch tower and learn about how train move from one track to another. We learned about the communication between stations and the history of trains in the area.

Found the museum open by chance and went up to the museum stairs with a eerie feeling. Found the switch levers and controls very interesting and the view and perspective of being at Washington street crossing of Metro North. I come from a family that had multiple family members that worked and died while working on the tracks. Great Grandfather and name sake (Charles Williams was killed on the river bridge before the walk bridge in 1908. Others in the family worked the railroad in New York with the Harlem River Gang. Grandfather also Charles O. Williams and his brother Earl Williams lived in South Norwalk. Their sisters husband was killed by overhead wire while on a work car and they all suffered injury at one time or another. The railroad at this time period was a dangerous place to work. This was a spiritual experience.

we happened by one day when they were open and running tours. Super small but steeped in history and the folks there were sweet, patient and super knowledgeable. Learned some very interesting facts! A must for anyone who takes the train!

Just happened to walk by and a sweet lady said it’s free if you would like to come in...and so happy we did! You go to the 3rd floor where all the switch levers are that controlled all the train switches...amazing...our guide was passionate and actually operated the switches in the summers in his youth. 2nd floor and other wonderful guide with great insight to 1896 when the tower was built and the amazing equipment we were looking at. Back to the first level and a neat gift shop. Each guide is sticky a volunteer. They gladly take donations to help preserve and maintain the property. There were 2 of us, we happily donated $20. Such a great surprise...thanks to the 3 wonderful volunteers.

The original switch house. Lovingly maintained by volunteers. More than I ever wanted to know about how the tracks used to be managed. Definitely worth a visit if you find it open.

Small (it's entirely in the switch tower), but enthusiastically run - it's so good to see places like this making the effort to open up to the public, when in reality there's a very small number of people who are actually interested - ie you do have to be at least a train enthusiast, if not a signalling nutter to truly appreciate this. I speak from experience living with one! Nevertheless, if you're in the area and have an interest in trains, drop by - it is interesting, and the volunteers are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I think the opening hours are Sat & Sun 12-5pm, but check their website or drop them an email if you're really keen.

As part of our walk through the SoNo Arts Festival we visited this small museum and listened to a talk about how trains were operated as recently as the 1970s. My husband who loves mechanical things enjoyed this very much
