We didn't have time to actually go inside and visit the museum, but we did read the historical placard outside, and took a look at the cannonball still lodged in the building.

The Cannonball House which is part of the Lewes Historical Society is still closed to the public as they are mounting a new exhibition and renovating one of the galleries. I was able to take a sneak peek inside because some of the volunteers were really nice and I wanted to take pictures inside. It really is a unique museum.
I love their telling the American Revolution, the use of pictures of the local history and the use of the displays to show what life was like on the ship. I liked seeing the original cannonball that hit the house during the war. It really shows a localized view of the war as the town played a big part in the early wars.
Remember to visit it when it reopens in a few weeks.

The Cannon Ball House Lewes Nautical Society Museum is such an interesting look at the past. I was really amazed at the history that the museum covered during the War of 1812, the local fishing industry, the shipping industry and its role in trade. The museum covers many facets of the Town of Lewes and its role in shaping the history of Delaware.
The docents are really nice and very informative. The tour guide who led me through the museum was the great great grandson of General Sherman and he even told me that his grandmother knew him as a little girl. I thought that was very interesing.
It is a great little local museum.

The main attraction here is not the Lewes Maritime Museum but the cannonball stuck in the building's foundation -- the cannonball that gives the museum its more popular name: Cannonball House.
I have my suspicions about that cannonball though.
The house, built circa 1765, was hit by a cannonball when the British bombarded Lewes, Del., in 1813 during the War of 1812. (Confusing, isn't it?) The Lewes Historical Society website says visitors come to town "seeking the famous house with a cannonball still in its side," implying that the cannonball in the foundation is the ORIGINAL cannonball. But the Society's sign on the building says the cannonball "shows where a cannonball struck," implying this is NOT the actual cannonball. Your choice, I guess, but I don't believe the British managed to lodge a cannonball in the foundation without doing any damage!
TIPS:
--Oh, yes. There IS a maritime museum here (I didn't go in). $5 admission fee, which also gets you into other Lewes Historical Society sites such as the Ryves Holt House (see my review, "Delaware's oldest house"). FYI: There are displays in the yard behind the museum that are somewhat visible without paying the fee.
--Mary Vessels Park, just down Front Street, is a great place to relax after visiting the museum (see my review, "Beautiful gazebo").

This historic house offers three interesting collections on piloting the Delaware Bay and Rive, on the former menhaden fishing industry, and on Lewes' role in the War of 1812. The latter exhibit will help schoolchildren and their parents understand the reason for the US' declaration of war again Great Britain and gives a glimpse of life aboard ship in that era.

The cannonball house is small and wont take long to explore. The folks working there obviously love their job. I wish I could remember the fellows name, because he gave us a 20 minute introduction, answered all our questions and suggested what to visit. Incredibly helpful!

This maritime museum was closed when we visited it in winter but I think as many others do to you go there to see (literally) a piece of history jetting out of this once homes foundation. There is parking right across the street that free and only takes a few minutes to visit. But there is other place to visit and in the parking lot there is a map of other locations in walking distance you can visit and make a day of it.

We stopped by here when the house was closed, but looked at the cannonball in the foundation. Worth the walk over to get an idea of the power of that little ball.

Interesting displays related to the history of ship piloting in the Delaware bay. It's not a place you'll stay for hours, but talking with the host I learned about the house and it's importance in US and Delaware history.

I did not tour the house as we just walked around it when visiting downtown Lewes but there really is a small cannon ball stuck to the foundation of the house. Not the most impressive thing in the world but an interesting part of the town's history. Next time I will have to stop inside to see the rest of the house.
