We got here right as they opened the gates and it was not as crowded as it was when we were leaving. We saw many youngsters enjoying their visit as they sat on the benches throughout the grounds loving on the resident cats. I think that would be the major attraction for children if you are bringing kiddos to this historical site. Definitely do a guided tour - it is part of the entry fee whether you choose to partake or not. The guides are very knowledgeable and personable. We had Michael and he did a good job. After the tour - it lasts about 30 minutes - you are free to roam the grounds and the house for as long as you like. We did circle back because there is so much information on the walls to read. Highly recommended!

Very neat to see this place where Hemingway was inspired to write so many of his stories. Cats galore. With tours every 15 minutes were convenient and well done.

The Docent's were terrific and the tour was worth the cost. Take advantage and enjoy the grounds and buildings and the amazing collections of 6 toed cats, they were fun and I don't even like cats.

Interesting tour with lots of information provided by the guide, and a lot to see within the house and garden. Very popular tour so be prepared to wait if busy. Well worth the cost.

We were pleasantly surprised by this little gem! There is an option to take a guided tour or to just wander the house and grounds by yourself, but I would definitely recommend the guided tour. Our guide, Scotty, was so knowledgeable and truly enthusiastic about showing us around. The home is fabulous and the fact that they have so many original artifacts is amazing. The cats are so awesome too (if you like cats). Polydactyl (six-toed) cats (57 according to Scotty) roam the grounds and they invite guests to pet them but not to pick them up. We were able to see inside Hemingway's writing studio and wander the gardens and grounds. Definitely well worth the admission. Gift shop was a little on the bland side - lots of books - we were hoping for some more interesting and unique items. Overall a great time and would highly recommend.

We enjoyed our visit to the Hemingway House. We do regret not doing one of the official/guided tours, but we had really limited time and we arrived between tours. We loved walking through and petting the cats. I'm a cat lover and seeing the Hemingway cats has been on my bucket list for some time!

Loved the grounds, the history and we had the best tour guide. Oh and the cats are so cute and fun. Highly recommend if you have an hour to spare.

Cats are clearly the main attraction for the kids. Be prepared to bring CASH to buy your tickets. We were not expecting this to be a CASH only event but luckily we had $80 cash on us when pooled together from the 4 of us!

We opted for the guided tour and were so glad we did. Just having someone give such impressive detail about Hemingway and the house made the experience so much more.

Such a fun experience while visiting the keys. The house and history of Hemingway is amazing and if you are an animal lover you will fall in love will the cats all over (even if you don't like cats- they won't bother you)
Scott was the Best tourguide, fun and sharing an incredible amount of knowledge and stories behind Hemingways life and the home. And so much history in the home and well preserved. Relaxed, fun and I recommend the tour even though you can go through on your own.
So much fun and it only takes as much time as you want.

Yes cats are everywhere! They are well behaved and it encouraged not to pet them but if allergic then maybe it’s not a good idea.
Can u bring cat treats and give them to the cats?

They use some of the admission funds to care for the cats. They are under a vets care and strict diets. The staff probably has a treat they can share with you. Enjoy!

We would love to go on this tour, but I am not sure how it will work because my husband has a pretty intense cat allergy. Are the cats inside the home? Has anyone been on this tour who has a cat allergy?

Question, we will be in Key West for a day on a cruise. The ship is offering a walking tour of Hemingway House and ending at sloppy Joe's bar (walking by a few other places, straw market, Truman White House. It looks like we can do the museum on our own (which includes a tour) for only $15 and then go to Sloppy Joe's on our own. Is it worth paying an extra $40 to go thru the ship? Has anyone done this tour with Celebrity Cruise lines?

I wouldn't go. They charge $15 for the tour that you are rushed in. We ended up getting a refund and leaving. Would NOT recommend the Hemingway Museum. There's definitely better things in town.

During the tour of the Hemingway House last week, they mentioned it is booked 2 years out in advance. Definitely call to book it OR check with a hotel near the pier. There is no “beach” near the pier, however, some of the hotels have a sand area that would work as a great replacement because the ocean is right there. We stayed at Hyatt Centric and a small wedding was there - this may be a great alternative work for renewing your vows vs waiting 2 years.

No it not necessary. There was a small group standing when we arrived, but it took approximately 5-10 min to get in.
You can take a free guided tour inside and trough the garden.
