We visited Dry Tortugas via the Yankee Freedom (reviewed separately), so this review is about our experience at the park itself without reference to getting there and back, the timetable, and the services provided thereat by the Yankee Freedom. I visited with my wife and 3 children (13, 10, and 6yo).
The centerpiece of this trip was Fort Jefferson, as Bush Key and Long Key were closed for bird nesting. The fort is quite impressive, the interpretive items interesting and engaging, and the history fascinating. Though it is in a state of genteel disrepair, the fort is beautiful in a spare, lonely way. For a monument of this type, visitors have rather extensive access, which is fun. Be careful with children, though-- the safety precautions, while they seemed appropriate to me, are more in line with European than standard American attractions. Wandering aimlessly could could result in unpleasant splats or plops, especially since you do have access to the upper levels of the fort. The walk around the outside of the moat is beautiful, but you cannot make the full circuit (without swimming) due to hurricane damage, and this is another place where kids need careful supervision.
The natural situation of the park was stunningly beautiful. The water had those beautiful, rich shades of aqua and blue, the stately lighthouse on Loggerhead Key hovered on the horizon, there were many interesting birds, and we also saw flying fish. We had planned to snorkel at the park, but the sea was so rough that there was essentially no visibility. This is apparently a risk in the winter. The beaches at the Key are beautiful, but the sand had a weirdly coarse grain size.
The best things about this Park were its great natural beauty, singular and fascinating fort, and the rich feeling of isolation. The most disappointing things were the condition of the seas, which made snorkeling and swimming inadvisable, and the fairly limited scope of activity. If you are not boating, diving, snorkeling, or camping, a 4-hour visit is just about right.

What an amazingly beautiful place to spend the morning. We did the adventure by seaplane, so it would not take the whole day. Such cool history and nature to be seen!

Such a unique experience.
I visited Key West for 3 nights prior to a cruise. I booked tickets to visit Dry Tortuga National Park several months in advance as it fills up quickly.
The ferry ride is about 2.5hrs to the middle of what seems to be nowhere.
But a beautiful civil war era fort from the 1800s awaits you to explore.
It was a neat way to spend a day, see some old architecture, and take in the history.
Snorkel equipment is provided which I tried out. Saw some pretty fish 🐟 and even a barracuda.
A breakfast snack and simple lunch is included, plus drinks and munchies available for purchase on board.
Definitely recommend 👌 the trek out.

There is one more key, a lighthouse. But this Fort Jefferson is an amazing masonry structures, one of the largest in the USA the area in the middle of the fort is 16 acres. There is clear water for snorkel or scuba - that is fun. The history is great and the LONG boat ride on a large catamaran was enjoyable. I highly recommend this - it is all day but you get home at sunset.

I love national parks so it makes me sad to see this one in such disrepair. But the history of why it is there and who lived there is fascinating and there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore (just watch your step and your head).

Be prepared for a long day BUT so worth it! Amazing place, to build this fort in the middle of the water at the time period it was built was mind blowing. Explore the fort, snorkel, lay on the beach and relax, whatever makes you happy. DON'T skip the tour it is much easier to appreciate the history when you hear it from the tour guides, you can tell they love what they do.

First, I recommend booking a least 2-3months in advance. I met people in key west that claimed they couldn't get on ferry because it was fully booked. The cost was $165 with np yr pass. Parking was $40,steep but the ferry ride there and the experience of the fort and coral lined beach will make you forget that. The fort is largest masonry fort in usa!. Pre civil war. I recommend the 20 min lecture to give you the history of place, the guide gives an option for more info but I don't recommend because you only have 4 hrs here. You want to explore all levels of fort, there are 3 which includes the ground. The views on 3rd floor are SPECTACULAR! you can snorkel, I didn't. I just lounged on the beach , they also provide lunch of jersey mike sandwiches and chips/dessert and a small breakfast. The beach here is one of the world's best in my opinion, possibly due to this place is fairly new to tourism, dont know how long. There is broken coral along and in the the beach so beware. I've been to most of the popular national parks and this is one of the top ones , let me say, In my oponion.

Wonderful day trip aboard the Yankee Freedom III to Dry Tortugas National Park. The park is remote, but that’s part of its charm! Jefferson Fort is huge and has interesting info boards along the walkways to give lots of history about the area. We had a blast snorkeling in the crystal clear blue water - saw shipwreck ruins, including an anchor, and some gorgeous fish. Other than misjudging the power of the sun and getting a raging sunburn, it was a perfect day! Highly recommend! A great day - totally unplugged and way off the beaten path!

Dry Tortugas was one of the remaining parks on our quest to visit all 63 designated national parks. We boarded the ferry for the 2+ hour trip to the island. The water was very calm, and the journey was quite pleasant. We chose to sit inside, as this area was experiencing unusually hot weather, and we knew we would be outside as we toured the fort. I had read Nevada Barr's novel about Fort Jefferson, so I was eager to see the places she described in the book. (Nevada Barr writes novels set in national parks and properties.) Fort Jefferson is a brick marvel! We opted for the guided tour, and Jim provided a wealth of information about the fort and its history. The views of the water from the top of the fort were spectacular! We returned to the ferry for lunch and the return trip. It was a sunny, warm day and a great way to visit a national park!

What an experience. Truly enjoyed this little known & hidden National Park. The snorkeling was great, The actual fort is extraordinary & memorable. Too bad the expense of the ferry is getting to be so astronomical that it is getting to be cost prohibitive.

Hello, I would very much love to know how to find a pilot to Dry Tortugas? I'm thinking of taking my 80 year old Dad and maybe do some snorkeling. Know the boat ride there would be too long. Wondering if there is better snorkeling in the Keys as some folks gave bad reviews for snorkeling at Dry Tortugas.

If you want to take a plane your only choice is Key West Seaplane Adventures. A bit pricey but we're glad we did this for the time savings and experience of landing/taking off on the water.

I plan to take the ferry day tour to Dry Tortugas. For someone who can't swim, how much fun will I miss out? Anyone know if the tour provide life vest along with snorkeling gears? Maybe I can try snorkel in shallow waters.

The tour company does provide snorkeling gear and I believe you need to reserve it so they can have it prepared for you. But if you don’t swim or haven’t snorkeled before I’d suggest just enjoying the walk through the fort (there isn’t enough time to walk the whole thing) , watch the birds in the sanctuary right on the island and bring a towel to sit on the beach. Don’t waste your time on something new and dragging the equipment around for this trip. Just enjoy the flight!

Two questions: On a rough day, would you recommend the seasick prescription patches for those prone to motion sickness? And, if you went during Covid, are masks worn indoors on the boat?

I do recommend sea sickness prevention. They sell pills at the harbor for $1.
When we were there in November, masks were worn on the ferry.

We will be camping in April 2022 for 3 nights. We were there back in the 90’s and remembered seeing fishermen coming to camp to trade there fish for liquor. Has anyone who has camped there recently know if this is still happening?!
Also how are campers boiling water, since we are limited to self lite charcoal or sterno?
Does the ferry provide tubs to store food and gear in?!
Thank you Tonya

We came on the ferry in July, and I don't think they provided storage. We didn't see any fishermen or trading of supplies on the beach.
Hola, saben si hay depronto oportunidades laborales en este lugar? podrian compartirme? gracias!
Do I have to book in advance? They are already booked up for all of next month? I don’t want to camp just site see and dive? Can I just go? I don’t want to waste my time getting up extra early to get turned back around??

don't know if I would take the ferry even if it was sailing on glassy seas - going by float plane you can have 6 hours at the Tortugas and the diving/snorleling is beyond belief - we went in early April and made reservations in February - well worth the extra expense - going early you get 2 hours without stumbling over tons of ferry folks too

How long does it take to walk the perimeter of the fort? No snorkeling just walking and taking pictures? Can you do it in an hour or two?

Is the yankee freedom the only ferry out there? Are private companies operating trips that are slightly less expensive?

It depends on how you get there I think. If you take the ferry, I don’t think you can bring dogs. If you take your own boat then you could bring your dog but dogs are not allowed in the fort. You can only bring dogs onto the island.
