Free parking adjacent to the museum and directly across the street from the Orlando Art museum and the science center is the Mennello Museum of American Art.
This morning they had yoga from 10:30-12:30 in the sculpture garden. And they had free family fun day. Look up their calendar of events, seems packed full!
The museum displays paintings/sculptures + contains at its core a permanent collection of paintings by Earl Cunningham (1893–1977). The Cunningham collection was donated by Marilyn + Michael Mennello of Winter Park, Florida. Other exhibitions show works of traditional/contemporary American artists.
To know a bit more about Earl Cunningham (1893–1977). He was a twentieth-century American folk artist. He was a self-taught artist who painted mostly landscapes of the East coast. He used vivid colors, flat perspective, and a few recurrent themes. He does not seem to care if his perspective was off or that he has flamingos in a Northern climate (I think I saw them in a painting that was either in MA or MI).
Cunningham was born in ME and moved to FL.
His art has received many awards and is displayed throughout many fine galleries. They also have a documentary that plays in the gallery.
Take time to see the other temporary works and the sculpture garden.

This is a great little museum. We saw an exhibit on Impressionism and Reality. The woman working was extremely knowledgeable about each work we asked about. There’s also a permanent exhibit on Earl Cunningham's art that was really well done. I’m usually squinting to see works but his paintings were illuminated well. After we toured the inside, we walked through the sculpture garden adjacent to the building. It was a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

A large portion of the museum features the art of Earl Cunningham. We listened to the video about his life and artwork - which was interesting. We also walked around to see the outdoor sculptures - about an hour in total. There is a small lot next to the museum that offers free parking.

The Mennello Museum of American Art was established in 1998 to preserve, exhibit and interpret the permanent collection of Earl Cunningham paintings. Located at 900 East Princeton Street in Orlando, in the former house of Howard Phillips in Loch Haven Park, next to Lake Formosa, across the street from the Orlando Science Center, Orlando Repertory Theater and Orlando Museum of Art, the grounds contain a sculpture garden which features abstract sculptures by artist Alice Aycock. But the main attraction is the artwork of Cunningham, a self-taught artist whose work reflects his own unique vision of the world that is fabulously technicolored and his naive style that speaks of joy and happiness and a weird fusion of traditional folk art and pop culture. Aside from Cunningham's permanent collection, other current exhibitions are Alice Aycock: Waltzing Matilda and Twin Vortexes, part of a series of seven sculptures in her significant outdoor exhibition on Park Avenue in Manhattan entitled Park Avenue Paper Chase and Impression and Reality, paintings of American Impressionism and Realism from the late 1800s through the 1920s, including 34 paintings and three works on paper by the most celebrated artists of the early 20th century in the United States, including John White Alexander, Henry Salem Hubbell and Frederick Carl Friescke. The Marilyn L. Mennello Sculpture Garden is open to the pubic and is most recognized for the 350-year-old sprawling live oak tree draped with Spanish moss.

The Mennello Museum of Art is owned and operated by the City of Orlando in Loch Haven Cultural Park. Although a small museum with two galleries, it presents temporary exhibitions featuring American art. A dramatic color photo exhibition along the Underground Railroad opened November 19. “Through Darkness to Light” is open until January 9, 2022. “The exhibit provides visitors with a small glimpse of what the long road to freedom may have looked like for 100,000 enslaved Americans in the years before the Civil War’s end.”
We learned about self-taught folk artist, Earl Cunningham, whose exhibition is a permanent collection. He has an interesting history: leaving his native Maine and eventually settling in St. Augustine. Cunningham's work uses brilliant colors and interesting perspectives. He painted for over 40 years and was fond of nature, ships and had a fascination with the Seminole Indians.
The grounds of the Mennello are a sculpture garden featuring 23 sculptures and adjacent to the Lake Formosa Neighborhood. A self-guided walking map is available in the museum. With the exception of a few pieces gifted to the museum by the artist, the sculptures are owned by the City of Orlando Public Art Collection. Every Sunday, yoga is offered lakeside. Tickets include a pass to enjoy complimentary admission to the museum. Every second Sunday of the month is Free Family Funday - free museum admission all day. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday 10:30-4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12-4:30. Closed Mondays and major holidays. Museum admission: Adults $5; Seniors (60+) $4; Students with valid ID and Children 6-17 - $1; Children under 6 and active, retired military and veterans with ID - Free. Face coverings are required in the museum.
The museum has plans to add an additional 40K square feet of exhibition to the existing building. Parking is pretty limited; we were fortunate to find a space. I hope parking is expanded with the addition. We spent a couple of tranquil hours on the property; a beautiful place to stroll and be at peace. It is also a great place for kids to run around and burn off energy. We did not know about this lovely spot until we did a TripAdvisor search for things to do near our hotel.

It was serendipity that I discovered this small gem of a museum on my way to the nearby Harry Leu Gardens. Orlando does absolutely nothing to promote this treasure to the large tourist population that flocks here. I was happy to see the table top model of the new building that will allow greater exhibition space for the permanent holdings.
On display during my visit were 3 groupings: a magnificent display of woodblock prints from Edo period Japan on traveling loan from the Reading (Pa.) Museum; a few works from the Mennello collection that related to the Japanese theme; the primitive-style landscapes of one Earl Cunningham, a local painter which have their own standing gallery space.
Parking is available for $5 at a nearby Science Museum garage. The admission here is $5 for adults. This is the best $10 I have spent in a long while. The grounds have some wonderful sculpture, too.
I recommend a visit for any art lover.

The one permanent exhibit based on Earl Cunningham’s work is as strange as anything you will ever see. He was a Florida folk artist and his works are unique. The sculpture garden has a few large pieces. Overall, this is a small museum right now. Take a look at the photos.

I found this museum in Florida Day Trips. To think I have lived in the area for over 40 years and never knew about this cute place. First, I walked around the museum. It is $5 for adults. It is small but has a nice display of Earl Cunningham paintings. After, I walked around the grounds to look at the sculptures and then took a walk along the Urban Trail. It was a nice afternoon and I even saw some people having a picnic lunch. A hidden gem!

We always enjoy the Mennello Museum when we come to Orlando, and we were a little disappointed to find it closed on the day before Thanksgiving. However, we really enjoyed exploring the sculpture garden and lake, and it was a very nice experience regardless. They always have interesting exhibits- both inside the museum and outside on the grounds, and we look foward to coming back when the museum is open again.

The Mennello Museum of American Art is a quint museum located in the beautiful town of Winter Park Florida. Located on the shores of one of Winter Parks 7 lakes. A amazing collection of sculptures laid out in a beautiful lakeside garden, make sure to catch the guided tour. Jolly Chriss.
