There's Caloosa Indian history of 2000 years ago. We had a great guide that talked about the Indian mounds and artifacts there and also the trees. Most interesting was the "tourist tree"with it's red "sunburn-looking" bark. Also the strangler fig that strangles palm trees.

We were vacationing in SW Florida and decided to swing over for a walk and to learn more about the Calusa tribe. We were all impressed with how well-kept the grounds and landscaping were. Beautiful scenery and rich in history.

Learned a lot about the history of the area and the Calusa Indians. They have a small gift shop and the volunteer gave us a background on the history of the area.

On the recommendation of the Welcome Center on Pine Island, we stopped to check out this trail. A free guided tour was beginning just as we arrived, but you can also take a self-guided tour. Our volunteer guide, Richard, was very knowledgeable and interesting. He took a lot of time telling us the history and demise of the Calusa tribe. He was a very good story teller and made this trail come alive. The scenery is beautiful with trees, plants and wildlife. We enjoyed the slow-paced tour and were happy to leave a donation at the Visitor's Center, where we also spoke with a very friendly volunteer. The grounds are well-kept and there are restrooms available. I loved that it is still very natural and easy to walk. Afterwards, we spent a little while on their pier across the road and enjoyed the Sound.

What an amazing site. Friendly knowledgeable staff, beautiful grounds, and incredible history. Definitely take a morning or afternoon to explore you will not be disappointed

We took a guided tour of the center, which is an easy walk and full of interesting wild life. Our guide did a wonderful job of giving us a picture of the life of the Calusa people and their interactions with the first Europeans. For anyone interested in the history of southwest Florida or of America's native peoples, I highly recommend it.

The Randell Research Center allows you to step back into time and learn about natural Pine Island, the earliest Calusa people and so much more. The trail isn't very long but we took out time snapping many great photos along the way.

Knowledgable volunteers give you a brief history and map. Signs at all locations give you lots of information. Very cool to out areas history!

After dining at the Tarpon Lodge we came across the road to visit RRC. Docents will give you a brief history of the Calusa Indians and then you may wish to walk a trail to see more of the site. There is a trail atop a midden with steps and two viewing spots. It was a very peaceful and quiet time as we walked around on a few trails. Afterward we went into the gift shop and purchased a few books on the Calusa. A very lovely afternoon.

Do we need reservations to take the walking tour around the Indian Mounds........? Is any week day "better" to visit? Will be our first time to visit.

I have been there 4 or 5 times and have never had a guide. Now I have talked to a guide before leaving on our self guided tour and asked questions afterwards but did just fine with a map they supply you with at the office. It is laid out so you go in loops so you can take an extended tour or short concise one.

Hi gobaby226 - The Randell Research Center is open from 10A.M. to 4 P.M. Monday through Saturday - it's free. There is one of those gratuity jars there, but your not required to make any donations. You might wanna call ahead of time just to make sure though. Their # is 239-283-2157 - hopes this helps ya!
