The bridge reminded me of the ones in the Florida Keys - with small islands between bridge sections. Per the website it cost $6 to cross onto the island.

Fined for visiting using Rental car !

Since Covid it is not possible to pay cash on Causeway to enter the islands of Sanibel and Captiva.. it is also not possible to pay the toll online if in a rental car … total rip off .. now being fined by rental company for non payment of toll , could not stop as no exit … Beware … will not be visiting again !

Highly recommend a day on Sanibel Island

Sanibel island is super cool. Over a long bridge from Ft Meyers Has a large more than half the island natural reserve with alligators. Birds. Manatee. Etc. Also an excellent island for shells. Two or three times a day. They way the island is positioned. The shells just wash up everywhere. Kids collected shells for hours.

Don't Miss The Causeway

Just driving in is fun,the anticipation of getting to island,pelicans flying eye level to your car fishing.But really its much more then the route in.For us we love to stroll at night,watching the dolphins,kite surfers,and the paddle boarders while waiting for another beautiful sunset.
Swimming and fishing available if you desire,set up camp and stay all day if you like.So relaxing.

Only option but beautiful

the causeway in of itself is beautiful. The 3 miles goes very quickly. It is no fun in the dark and rain although so plan wisely. As is the case in most of Sanibel, the traffic is awful so be prepared to sit if you cross at peak time....mornings till noon going out to the island and later afternoons to return. We were fortunate to avoid those times but saw bumper to bumper backups for miles going the opposite each crossing....lucky us. There is a $6.00 toll which is all electronic so no throw cash in the booth to hold up this traffic. We rented a car so I have not yet seen a charge on this. Deal is, if you want to do Sanibel, this is the only option so sit back and enjoy with patience.

Breathtaking drive from the mainland to Sanibel

The Sanibel Causeway is a causeway in Southwest Florida that spans the San Carlos Bay, connecting Sanibel Island with the Florida mainland in Punta Rassa. The causeway consists of three separate two-lane bridge spans and two man-made causeway islands between them. The entire causeway facility is owned by Lee County and operated by the Lee County Department of Transportation. The entire causeway is three miles long from end to end, and currently has a $6 toll in effect for island-bound vehicles only. The bridges are not individually named and are simply referred to as bridges A, B, and C. The islands are also named A and B. Both series begin from the mainland side.

Driving up the Causeway is a great experience as we climb higher and higher and the view of the San Carlos Bay gets larger and larger. The $6 Toll is quite stiff but the view and the drive were worth it. However,
our return was slow as the bridge was clogged with traffic. Parking on Sanibel is expensive ($7/hour) at any of the beaches. So, people who want to watch the fabulous Western sunset over the ocean, choose the Causeway park as a parking place (parking s FREE).

Be warned that travel can be slow on the Causeway but on the other hand the fantastic view provides the excuse to enjoy the slow pace!

We stopped quick on our way across to the Island at one of the roadside parking areas. To park here is free, compared to the $5 per hour at the parks on Sanibel. We were there on a week day in the afternoon and I still found a very nice banded tulip shell. I used the bathroom and it was clean and well stocked. We saw many people fishing from the beach areas. It is just a very nice place to stop and watch the boats come and go.
