I cannot say enough about this place. The wine is delicious, The scenery is gorgeous, and the service is impeccable. Shelby at the bar was wonderful and took such good care of us. And Dahlia… i’m not sure how you guys scored such an incredible employee but you are lucky to have her. She tended to our every need and made sure we had everything we could want at all times. We will absolutely be back.

Labor Day Weekend at Chateau Elan
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021 • คู่รัก
Overall, Chateau Elan has good bones and employs good people and has a good golf course (time only allowed us to try the Woodlands course - but the brakes on the golf carts are tricky - staff could prepare golfers for how to best engage the brakes - we finally figured it out by about the 9th hold). I think we would stay at Chateau Elan again if the price was right. It has a more youthful crowd, and there were at least 2 weddings taking place the weekend we were there, so the bridal parties were partying throughout the weekend. The lack of masks among the guests made us a little uneasy so we stayed to the larger open spaces inside, and to the outside activities. The place may be less busy and quieter during the week.

By “good bones” I mean the property has comfortable and luxurious details. However, we found ourselves consistently turned around backwards trying to find one building or another, or routing ourselves around closed areas (wedding stuff - we get it). After giving up on finding a walking route, we broke down and took the shuttle to the spa, only to later find we could have walked down a short driveway to the spa in less than a minute. Also, the route from the inn to the chateau is non-intuitive. You cannot reach it from the pub (which looks connected) but find yourself climbing up a grassy hill between wine vines until you pop out near the front entrance. We were not the only ones confused. Inside the elevators, it would be helpful to also post a legend next to the floor numbers to tell you where you are. In sum, this resort could do with some really good signage to tell folks how to get where they want to go. On the bright side, I made my fit bit walking step goal every single day.

By “good people” I mean, with very few exceptions, we enjoyed meeting every staff person - especially the wait staff at Versailles and the staff at the spa. Citra and Dino went out of their way each time we ate at Versailles to greet us and to make us feel welcome and looked after. The gentlemen working the front door were very friendly and helpful (although I teased one of them that it took me a full minute to walk to the pub when he said it would only take 40 seconds). Everyone was wearing a smile, which was good to see.

Overall, we expected just a little more for our money. For the Bed and Breakfast Escape, ($1425 before any charges were made to the room), we got a king sized bed on the first floor of the Inn, overlooking the woods, and the breakfast buffet each morning at Versailles. The bed was very comfortable and had good pillows. The bathroom had a nice spa tub and glass shower, and good products. There was no maid service due to covid but they provided us with extra towels both days. There were a few fees that seemed excessive. For example, there was no valet, so we were charged $17 each day just to park our own car in a parking lot far far away and hiking back. A parking charge seems like just another way for the resort to make money. In addition to the fees under state law, there was also a $15 non refundable booking charge, a $45 a day resort fee, and a 2.2% surcharge if we used a credit card. The amenities included for the $45 a day charge allowed us to use the pool, check out free bikes, play at the ping pong table, lounge in public areas for reading, hike the nature trail, and to play outdoor games like corn hole while a local musician played good music for the crowd. [At similar resorts in N. Ga. with comparable pricing, we’ve enjoyed free activities like kayaking, petting zoos, frisbee golf, pickleball, board games, extensive walking and exercise trails, and free s’mores around the fire.]

At Chateau Elan, the pool was nice but you have to get their early to get a place. We got the last chairs at 11am, which were right next to the DJ on a second level (not near the pool). The DJ was great - played good music - but we were so close, I had to use my earplugs to tolerate it. Fun, but certainly not relaxing. It also took us over an hour and a half to order and get served lunch. No fault of the one fellow working the whole pool but we finally had to go find the guy ourselves to place an order. The flatbread was very good.

The resort fee also allowed us to take out complimentary bikes around the property. We love to ride bikes on vacation, and we pictured this as a leisurely way to see the resort while getting a little bit of exercise. What we didn’t know before starting out was that the resort is ALL BIG hills. We cycled up the first hill near several abandoned horse paddocks and stables (we assume the resort used to have horses, which would be a lovely amenity if it was still in place), and then found ourselves zooming down the other side. We soon found ourselves at a gate that threatened arrest if we proceeded past it. After a quick call to the front desk, we were told that did not apply to us, so we could proceed. That gate deserves a sign for bikers (who make it that far) or the front desk should tell folks what to expect along the route. I also would have liked to have been told in advance that the course was very hilly before starting out. We would have probably declined to go (it’s vacation after all). And after we got out there, we walked up and biked down a few good steep hills, and then brought the bikes back and felt ill from the exertion in the heat. (We had wondered why people taking the bikes out were coming back so fast. Then we found out for ourselves.)

Next we tried the nature trail. There were yellow painted stripes around trees to help guide, but we still managed to lose the trail more than once. It was also pretty overgrown and “rustic,” which perhaps is expected for a “nature” trail but it could still use some TLC. Some less sure-footed people would have some trouble with it. More than once we got lost and wandered until we saw a yellow stripe somewhere in the woods. In the end, we gave up and followed some sign that said “return to clubhouse this way” which was likely meant for golfers on the executive 3 par course, but it brought us to civilization again. We hiked up a hill to try a back door of the Inn and wandered around the conference center until we popped out in the main area. Not very enjoyable, and could be improved if the trail was better maintained, and had better signage.

We had spa appointments, so we decided to enjoy the spa for a few hours before our treatments were to begin. We skipped the indoor pool (perhaps it would be a good option on a cold day?) and the jacuzzi/hot tub (too many people in it) and opted to sit outside with our towels. Some people had champagne and we never figured out who got champagne and who didn’t. It was not offered to us when we arrived, notwithstanding the staff was very friendly and helpful. We figured champagne was part of a package we did not book. The spa treatments themselves were a highlight. We purchased some spa products and enjoyed the lounge area. We were told there were snacks and drinks in the lounge, however we did not see any snacks. There was some sort of hot tea and flavored water that was very good. It would be nice to see some mixed nets, or trail mix or granola bars? We had trouble with our lockers, something another person in the lounge also mentioned. Although knowing my code for the locker, (it is the same code I always use), the locker wouldn’t open. I imagine staff gets tired of having to re-open those all the time.

The only other thing I’ll mention that it would be nice to see improved is a reduction in the indoor flies. There were flies at dinner and both morning’s at breakfast. In fact, I did not get ham with my breakfast omelette for that reason. I saw a few resting on the meat but avoiding the vegetables, so I got a spinach omelette. I’m not sure what can be done about that problem in such a large open space, but shooing flies away from our food a few times wasn’t something we enjoyed.

Overall, we will look for “good deals” to come back to Chateau Elan in the future. And we’ll know what to expect for our money.

We spent last weekend here for a work convention, it was absolutely beautiful! Our last day we went to the winery for a tour. Zach was our guide and was absolutely amazing. He was one of the best parts of our stay. He went above and beyond and was super friendly. My husband could have spent all day talking to him. He is the image you want every guest to encounter. Thank you Zach for being you, genuine is hard to find these days! - Joleen & Tommy.

We went to the winery and Kai was absolutely a doll and fantastic in her customer service. She made us feel valued and appreciated. The birthday celebration we went there for, she hyped and matched our vibe. Everyone there was kind, we had a little dose of Zac, but Kai was the one to make sure all our needs we met.

John suggested dinner at the golf course and shuttled us there. We had huge balloons that he took back to the hotel for us so we didn’t have to haul it. Dinner was yummy and the server there was super friendly. At this point, our mind was a little hazy, so didn’t quite catch his name, but if it helps, it was on a Wed. evening.

Thank you for a wonderful time. We will be back!
