Bowfell Mountain was the target point of our circular route (start and return to Cockley Beck). The route is very interesting, although there is no clear path on the section between Cockley Beck and Crinkley Crags and it is a bit "cross-country", with some steep ascents - just more fun and probably thanks to this, it is not very popular, as we only encountered sheep on this section.
Great views, both downhill (valleys and lakes) and uphill (Scafell Pike).
Decent, waterproof shoes are a must as there were plenty of wetlands along the way, especially on our way back, along Lingcove Beck and Moasdale Beck.

Parking by the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub and walking up Bowfell is about a 14km round trip taking 6 hours. It has about 850m worth of ascent too, so a good day out

Picked one of the few sunny days to climb Bowfell with my son and dog . Set off late because had work in the morning, but determined to carry on because the window of sunny weather was small . Parked at National trust car park by dungeon gyll hotel . Then long walk to stool end farm path , then another long walk to the farm itself . Eventually by 3pm we started the ascent all the way up the Band , which is relentless but very clear marked stone stepped path. Towards the top , path turns left then right for the final ascent. The 3 tarns or should I say puddles appear, then just a straight forward steep climb up stones to the top of the great Slab . We took the tourist route because this was where we saw everyone else descending , but apparently Wainwright’s preferred route goes right at the 3 tarns and comes out at the base of the great slab, which I think would be more spectacular so will try that route another day . Also there’s a spring which gushes out of the base of the slab and I would have liked to have tasted the water. After passing the slab the summit is a scrambling over giant rocks. There is no cairn because the rocks themselves become one . The landscape is lunar and humbling , beautiful and wild . The views over to Scafell Pike are awesome, you can even see the turret of Scafell Pikes cairn. I don’t think any other mountain would give you this view of the Scafells . Descent is a retracing of steps and we made it just before darkness fell . It’s a long slog and a monster of a mountain but worth it.

Simply stunning views from Bowfell. The whole walk all the way up from the ODG hotel is full of views. Quite a long hike but well rewarded. This is a must-do walk for any Lakes enthusiast.

Great walk up Bowfell. The walk is easy to navigate. The views on a clear day are absolutely amazing.

What a walking/hiking experience with 2700 ft of ascent. Not for the unfit or unprepared. From the Dungeon Ghyll Hotel through Stool End farm and past the Band and onwards to the top of this excellent rugged place. The views are panoramic and so far as I can tell you they encompass the whole of the Lake District. Well worth the 3 hours or so of the climb. If you carry on off the top in a northerly direction, there is an alternative descent via Angle Tarn (take a map), which also offers a scenic view. Bowfell fell ranks within Wainwrights top 6 and rightly so, it is indeed a majestic place

A mainly forgotten mountain in the lakes, but the 6th highest. Best tackled from Langdale, plenty of parking here. You can follow the steep path up the band to the base of the mountain, but we decided to go up past Whorneyside force, and the valley to the 3 tarns. Then the climb up past the great slab, and on to the very rocky summit. Took about 3 hours up, and 2 hours back down via the band

I planned to walk up to Crinkle Crags but when I arrived there couldn't resist walking over to Bowfell. It's not for the feint-hearted and the walk back down The Band seemed to take forever. Highly recommended.

Long walk out and and a steep climb up it was rocky at the top but we made it! What a view absolutely fantastic and from there it was not far to another rocky outcrop. Made our way to Esk Pike and then back down long walk back but a sense of achievement

One of the best mountain walks in the Lake District. Spectacular views of the "interesting" side of Scafell and Scafell Pike. The most interesting route is via the climbers traverse and great slab from Great Langdale
