Awesome State Park with a variety of recreational opportunities

I visited Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry on a weekday afternoon in September riding my bike on the trails. The State Park has amazing trails with rolling hills, but the unusual and pleasant feature of the trails is that they are one-way for bicyclists. The trails are clean, well marked, hardpacked crushed limestone and well maintained. The trails provide excellent views of lakes, wetlands, and forests. There are three main loops, and several parking lots and access points. The three trails altogether make about a 10-mile ride; but, there are several interconnections that make for shorter rides. Birds are chirping all the while; I came across a family of turkeys crossing the trail at one point. The trails are mile-marked permanently for different races such as a 5K, a Half-Marathon. The Visitor Center was not active when I visited due to Covid. This State Park is adjacent to McHenry Dam State Park and in fact the bike trails in Moraine Hills can be accessed from McHenry Dam Park.

Moraine Hills is an awesome State Park with a variety of recreational opportunities. I hope to revisit this State Park in different seasons to get a full appreciation of the park features.

Great place to walk or bike! Lots of birds to be seen around here. Trails fairly well marked. Also lots of picnic places.

Oaks, marshes and plenty of room

We loved this place! Forests with spreading live oaks, beautiful marshes with riverine streams, Lake Defiance where you can kayak. Best of all, almost no one was there! We'd go again anytime!

Walking at Moraine Hills

This is a great place to walk or bike. The trails are clean, well marked and well maintained. Everyone has been great about social distancing. This is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and nature.

At 8:15 pm, a handful of people were in the park at the river. We had just eaten. The others were people fishing or just visiting and enjoying. At 8:15pm, an employee driving a small white car with some sort of logo on the door drove into the lot, laying on the horn. She yelled at us that she was going to lock us in and that she's locked 2 other cars in other parks. Then she continued driving down the parking lot, still laying on the horn. This is RUDE and absolutely pathetic customer service. No one was a criminal and her behavior was absolutely not necessary. I will never go back if this is how people are treated by the staff.

Horrible experience

Visited the park with my wife and kids a few weeks ago. As one enters the park, there is a winding road all the way back leading to a small lake. There is a park’s main office next to the lake. That office is being run by a man who is single most disgusting human being we have ever met in our long lives. We got yelled at, screamed at, threatened in front of our 8 year old kids for making a mistake of making a wrong turn on a road with no other people in a 3 mile radius. We felt absolutely disgusted leaving the place. Why would anyone want to come on their day off to the park being run by emotionally unstable and miserable people, people whose salaries we help to pay ?
My 8 year old son asked to never bring him back there,
Don’t worry, kid , why would I ever !

I love going here for a nice walk with the hubby. I also like taking my grand kids here to play a while and burn some of their energy. It's a nice state park and well maintained.

Wonderful State Park

Moraine Hills is a wonderful State Park that has a lot to offer. Several hiking and bicycle trails with multiple parking lots as starting locations for your adventure. There is a large pond (small lake) with a trail around it where fishing is possible in good weather. I have never done that but it looks very peaceful and quite and you could bring your own canoe or kayak or rent a row boat for a fun day.

Wet lands provide a stop over for water birds when they are in season so it is possible to see some Geese or Herons...maybe even some Hawks or Eagles. In the right season you are likely to see many frogs or some turtles too.

This property is well attended by the Illinois Conservation Department and many volunteers contribute to the care and maintenance. Friends of Moraine Hills State Park provide bird feeding stations and attract a fine assortment of song birds. You can watch them from the parking lot if you wish.

Hike on paved trails year round

We loved walking through the woods and bogs on rolling hills. Park is accessible to bikes and skis. Restrooms open. Quiet, wonderful day out!
