So close to home but never visited

For the first time we visited Delaval Hall, having driven past so many times we assumed wrongly that it would be quiet because we didn't ever see anyone visiting. How wrong can we be!!
We arrived about 10.30, the car park was almost full, being National Trust members our entry was free.
Well done to National Trust, keeping the fire damage but creating an enjoyable visit. The central hall with a big silver ball hanging from the ceiling was inspirational, the fabric of the building has been maintained but shows the damage caused by the fire.
The West Wing is different, the upside down room is very amusing and the theatre in the old kitchen was great for kids to play in. Lots of artifacts in the ground floor rooms, oh and the wig.....how would anyone wear that ( see pictures)

This place is unique in that you get to see the bare bones of a stately home......literally! Make sure you dont miss the outdoor talk about the rich and fascinating antics of 'The Gay Delevals'. The staff really bring them to life with their enthusiasm!
The homemade scones in the café are gorgeous. Thank you to the very helpful young female café assistant who gave me a small quantity of milk that was vital for me to take my medication.

Disappointed.

The grounds were very well maintained and the autumn colours beautiful.
The staff were friendly and offered directions.
However, there were rooms after rooms containing no information boards at all, and upon requesting some information, was told they just don't know.
I asked where the old information boards were and again, they didn't know.
What is the point of viewing if we cannot be told the age, province etc. of statues, busts, tapestries.
There were also no visitor videos offering information on the history of the building.

Enjoyable afternoon at Delaval Hall

Having a week up North we visited Delaval Hall , was very impressive Stately home and Grounds with some unusual history of the family that lived here . The Main Hall entrance with mirrored Globe hanging from ceiling to the room with upside down furniture was fascinating as well as the Cantilevered staircase . Thought this National Trust venue was value for money at adult price of £9.00 each and free parking, spent 3/4 hours walking around but may have stayed longer to enjoy grounds more , as it was a rainy day .

Interesting visit.

We went with friends and their 8 yr old son. Lots to explore in and outside.
The Hall is being refurbished, but there are a lot of rooms already done, especially in the cellar area.
The gardens are immense. Play areas for small children and a lot of lawn games available on the south lawn.
National Trust, but good value as well if not a member.

Remarkable place

The hall is just a shell but still extremely interesting. There is an incredible large hall with many rooms on several levels to explore. The cellar area is fantastic and full of interesting history. The gardens are pretty and there are plenty of them to explore.

Holiday visit

Called into this NT property whilst visiting the area. It is unlike any other one that we have visited. The staff were very helpful in telling us all about the history, the fire, why it is left as it is,

We had a nice family trip here. The gardens are nice to explore and the house (which is ruined inside) is also interesting to wander around. There’s scant information on site however so it is a wander rather than a fully informative visit.

Was nice to finally get around this landmark that I’ve driven past since being a child and visits to Seaton Sluice beach.

The cafe did lunch for us but there was a problem with the ordering system so it was necessary to chase to get items. Some were frustrated and left without eating, also some items went out of stock too, go early.

An unexpected delight with a fascinating history

A really fascinating building, Seaton Delaval Hall has a very interesting history. At the moment it is still a work in progress but there is lots to see and admire. There is currently a project entitled “The Curtain Rises” underway which refers back to the 18th century Delavals who acquired quite a reputation for parties and shows. The guides were very helpful and happy to answer the many questions which we had about the property. Their knowledge was accompanied by three informative videos in the entrance hall.
We were very fortunate to make our visit on a beautiful autumn day so spent a considerable amount of time exploring the grounds and well-maintained gardens. The café served a good selection of tasty snacks and sandwiches which made for the perfect lunch.

Slightly disappointing

We knew that much of Seaton Delaval was a ruin, but had expected at least one wing to be 'visitable', so we were very disappointed that restoration is running about a year late and it was still closed. However it was interesting to see what it would once have been.
Given it is a Vanburgh building you expect something rather better than you get - don't be fooled!
