A Family Friendly Freedom Campsite

A family friendly campsite right in the heart of the Catlins. Popular spot for freedom camping, photographers, surfing, paua diving, wildlife viewing and beach walks. There are 3 long drop toilets, 2 non treated water taps and several fire bowls in the campsite area. We saw lots of playful seals and shooting stars during our stay, highly recommend this hidden gem!

If you have the time, take your RV or tent to this beautiful bay. The road is unsealed, but take care and get used to a few cattle stops. When you reach a fork in the road, take the left (low) road and you will arrive at a stunning bay. There was a good mixture of freedom campers already there and it seems there is fresh (albeit brownish) water for campers to use. This bay is a hidden gem. Take your lunch and togs.

Absolutely breath taking!

Few pot holes on way in and cattle stops but over all easy drive on gravel. Get in early as camp sites were packed!! Took my dog and she loved it. Bring gumboots to get across the river to the beach and wind proof gear if its windy. Toliets were clean and tidy. The whole place is just absolutely beautiful.

Magischer Doc-Campingplatz, traumhafte Umgebung!

Waren mit unserer kleinen Tochter (3 1/2 Jahre) im März 2020 dort. Übernachteten eine Nacht dort. Hatten einen tolle Regenbogen bei den Felsen über dem Wasser. Zum Campen auch einer der tollsten Plätze (Doc) - natürlich nur Self-contained. Man kann tolle kleine Spaziergänge machen, oder einfach den Blick genießen!!!

Dieser Strand ist traumhaft und kaum besucht. Hier ist ein DOC Camping möglich und zum Glück waren nicht viele Camper da, als wir dort eine Nacht verbrachten. Es gibt Toiletten und die Bucht ist über einen holprigen Weg gut zu erreichen und absolut sehenswert. Zwei Seelöwen, die sich stritten konnten wir auch am Strand beobachten. Ansonsten waren wir ganz alleine an diesem Strand.
Ein tolles Fleckchen Erde und kein überlaufener Touristenspot! Tolle Möglichkeiten für Fotos und unbedingt eine Nacht dort verbringen.

Nice spot after a good 2o minutes drive on gravel road. Spot gets crowded. Really good surfing! Lots of sea life; birds, dolphins and seals. On low tide you can walk on the rocks around the right corner and have a look in the next Bay!

It is always with some uncertainty and anxiety one travels to far away destinations in a autocamper. Especially with children. That was certainly the case for our family of 4, when we headed towards Purakaunui Bay. But i promise. It is definately worth the long trip :) beautiful surroundings :) and the sheep-walk in between the vans on sunrise is natures own small adventure-park :)

What a beautiful bay. You take a gravel road which is quite narrow in places to this bay. When you get there you are not disappointed. On the left large stone cliffs tower above the small sandy bay. The water is not still, very much the opposite so if you surf you need to go here. There is a DOC campsite where you pay $6 per person per nite to camp and $3 per child per night. There is just a basic toilet block and nothing else. We spotted surfers out past the break and seal lions cavorting on the sand. What a stunning place.

Seelöwen und DOC Camping

Absolut fabelhafter und sauberer Strand. Ausser mir waren nur fünf weitere Wagen anwesend. Die Strasse ist in gutem Zustand und mit kleineren Camper problemlos zu erreichen. Saubere Toiletten. Übernachtung kostet 6NZD. Wer Sterne beobachten oder fotografieren will ist hier absolut richtig. Keine Lichtverschmutzung. Es hat Seelöwen. Sogar einige. Bitte haltet Abstand zu den Tieren. Surfen sollte auch möglich sein. Doch seit darauf gefasst, dass euch die neugierigen Seelöwen im Wasser sehr nahe kommen können. Dies hat zumindest ein anwesender Surfer gesagt.

Nice beach with DOC campsite

Beach is very nice if you are surfer or just you want to relax. High cliffs. On the campsite basic things (long drop toilet, tap water). Don't expect to be there alone - many people think the same and thats why there is a lot of people.
