Blast from the Past!

It's hard to imagine that the ruins were once a part of a small prosperous town, a place where people worked and lived their lives only over half a century ago.

We went on the tour as my grandfather was one of the workers on the site and even took part in the strike. Our guide was very informative and gave an in-depth history of the oil shale plant and was happy to answer questions along the way. If you live even remotely close to Glen Davis then it's worth visiting. The surrounding mountains are surprisingly beautiful and the ruins themselves are impressive, especially the tall final structure.

As advised in the description, do bring water, sun protection and appropriate footwear. This tour is most suitable for grown-ups in terms of appreciating the experience. Kids, especially small children may not get much out of learning about the shale work ruins.

What a interesting tour of these ruins with a guide who knows exactly what he is talking about. Thoughly recommend a visit to this old town of history.

An Australian Adventure in the second largest canyon in the world!!

This road trip out of Sydney took us over the Blue Mountains into the world’s second largest canyon to visit the ghost ruins of long abandoned oil shale mine. Thanks to Tour Guide Graeme for a warm welcome and a fascinating history of this mining operation. We walked the canyon floor and learned that Glen Davis was notable because it was the first time that there had been an attempt in NSW to create a completely new town based on the best town planning principles. It now lies in ruins in one of the most remote, specular locations in Australia.

A very knowledgeable guide and a fantastic place to visit. Couldn’t believe that not long ago there was a prosperous and happy town that almost in a blink of an eye disappeared.

Glen Davis Oil Shale Works tour

Graeme guided us on a tour of the Oil Shale Works last weekend, which was very interesting and informative. Graeme was knowledgeable about the history of the works and the Capertee Valley. He was happy to answer all questions, including the recent filming of SAS Australia at the site for those interested. He took the time to allow the visitors to check out all of the site and finish the tour with a great understanding of the history of the site and the Glen Davis area. The whole Glen Davis area is worth a visit as the scenery is awesome.

Graeme was an excellent tour guide

Graeme took my boyfriend and I around the ruins last Saturday, and it was one of our favourite things we did on our holiday! He was a great tour guide, very friendly and informative, and happy to answer all of our questions. He really took his time to thoughtfully guide us around and made sure we came away with good knowledge and appreciation of the site. We went in knowing nothing and came away pleasantly surprised at the amount of interesting history there. . Booking in advance is recommneded, as is bringing boots if it's been raining. Highly recommended!

CXAMPING AT GLEN DAVIS

CAMPING AT GLEN DAVIS: FREE OF CHARGE
Suitable for semi-offroad caravans, campers trailers, tents.
4WD vehicle not required to access this site.
National Parks pit toilets. No showers. No AC power, No fresh water.
100% self sufficient camping.

If you want to camp at Glen Davis, there is a massive open air camping ground about 4km east of Glen Davis township.

DIRECTIONS: Just before you enter the Glen Davis township on Glen Davis Road, turn left into Goora Street. Follow Goora Street for about 3km to the causeway.. Cross the causeway (CAUTION: this causeway may be flooded after heavy rain in the area).

After the causeway, the road is called Capertea River Trail but it is wide enough for 2 vehicles to pass. Within 50 metres, turn left and follow it for about 2km to the campground.

Note: If you had turned right after the causeway you'll go to the eastern end of the Glen Davis Shale Oil Mining facility but it's fenced off and you can't get into that from this side. It's really good to park there and climb up the hill for a fantastic view of the Shale Oil facility and other historic buildings at the top.

There are also other Mine opening in the bush and an old railway track path (the rails and sleepers are gone though) leadfing up to the mine opening but you can't get into the mine as it is flooded and blocked.

What a BEAUTY

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I spend two nights and three days. Stayed in General Managers cottage, near the Ruins. The mountain views and the quietness was amazing. Imagine, the mountains ( part of Capertee Valley ) you are seeing are almost 150 million old. The property is surrounded by the Wollemi State Forrest and has many wild lives.

Interesting Ruins and Informative Tour

We stayed at Glen Davis recently and took the opportunity to do the Saturday afternoon tour (2pm sharp).
Found it to be most interesting.
The ruins are fantastic, they have an eerie beauty about them. The Valley surrounding the ruins is one of the most beautiful places in Australia.
Well worth a visit.
